I need some Advice please!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

New here so i'll say hello. At the moment i have a Subaru Impreza RB5 which i'm selling. I was thinking what car to go for as i need to get a house. I've always liked the Corrado, nicely built (better than the Subaru) and they also have a nice engine line up.

My Questions are:

Are there things to look out for when buying a G60? Do many things go wrong with them?

The VR6 model, is there much difference between this and the G60?

I'm undecided which one to go for. I like the Supercharger as i'm used to having Turbo'd cars, having owned 2 S3 Quattro's and now a Scooby.

How much should i expect to pay for a good G60/VR6?

Thanks in advance guys/gals!

Cheers

welcome to the forum, most of your questions will be throughly answered by using the search, type in g60 vs vr6 for some rather hetaed debates

the main thing with the g60 is the supercharger will need rebuilding at least every 60,000miles (thats if nothing goes wrong before that!!) most of the cheaper g60's will need a rebuild, when the charger is upgraded it is quicker than a standard vr6, but in stock form the vr6 is the quickest of the range. as for the prices, some vr6's may go for 9k,some maybe for 3k!! 5.5/6 is enough to get a decent vr6, beware that most of the cheaper corrados will have in excess of 100k on the clock, dont be put off by this as long as the car has a good history, vw's eat a 100k for breakfast!!! A really good G60 will probabble be about 5k tops and thats with a decent amount of charger work!!

The RB5 is a nice car, ive only had the pleasure of driving a P1, I thought that was awesome by the way!!!

Well seeing as I now own a G60, I spose I have to say that a well modified G60 has to be punchier than a VR6.

But in standard form the VR is better, and the sound of that wonderful V6 on song can't be beaten :)

R.B.5 - the Corrado doesn't generally go wrong in a HUGE way, its usually really annoying little things that go wrong. But to make sure you are not getting a duffer, just look for a comprehensive history folder of things like reciepts and MOT's, FSH (preferably VW and/or VW specialist) and have a good read through the Corrado Forum Buyers Guide, which can be found here.

Both types of car have different personalities, so i'd suggest you try and get a test drive in both before you make up your mind!

The VR6 model, is there much difference between this and the G60?

It depends on how you drive. I've owned both, and the fundamentals are

(i) the G60 sits up begs, is always dying to go somewhere, and with attention can match a VR6. Its a revver, not a cruiser.

(ii) the VR6 is front heavy, has tons of bottom end, and gurgles its way up the revs. Its not so reliable, as it runs very hot and the electrics dont seem to like it as much....but hell if you've had one for a week it charms you more and more and more. Foot down and in decent tune it will go some. If you then add the right supercharger it will blow off an M3. But it is front heavy, and takes some effort working it through windy lanes.

Drive the two. Dont decide until you have. I prefer the cruise gurgle of the VR6 now but thats my opinion.

Guys thanks very much. My questions have now been answered. I think i'll just go for a nice G60 if i can find one. They are hard to come by in the right colour though! Was thinkin Purple (not sure of code) and that nice grey, which really isn't that far away from the colour of my car!

Once again thanks for the quick replies. I'll be sure to drive them both though before i commit and i'm pretty sure i'll go for the G60.

Cheers

to continue from Bruno, but to disagree with him...........

i changed to a 95 vr6 from a honda crx (go-kart), as far as handling goes the VR6 with standard suspension and standard tyre size is one of the best i have driven. you dont really notice the big engine atall (having said this i have not driven a G60 if im honest)

i wasnt disappointed

Yeah seconded Nathan.

They do handle well. When I bought the VR I was expecting understeer by the bucket load, but was gladly proven wrong.

Yeah the VR is nose heavy due to the engine sitting ahead of the driven wheels, unlike the G60 where it's engine is directly above them but in the real world, this doesn't cause as much of a problem as you'd think.

VW did well to defy physics, as have Porsche with their pendulum effect 911.

R.B.5, Nice one, good choice. like every one says there are differences, as a G60 owner i HAVE to say get a G60  but seriously might want to drive them both.

I actually had a cheeky little play with an RB5 one day before i had any engine work done and it was neck and neck, so i dont think you'll find either of them too slow compared to what you have. :)

My car is also quite a similar colour to the RB5.... :D

Pity im not even considering selling it anymore

Good luck

Just to second whats been said above... on standard suspension and tyre set-up the VR does not understeer as you'd expect a FWD with a 2.9 lump sitting in the front would... the price you pay for this is the negative front wheel camber wears your front tyres out relatively quick...

..still feels like its on rails though..

Not driven a G60 so can't compare the two though..

I would concur. The VR only feels sloppy at the front end if you've got the tyre pressures too low, or you're under heavy braking, IMHO. In all other circumstances (powering round a bend at 80 in 3rd for example :) ) it feels simply sublime...

Supercharged and I have swapped keys on a number of occasions and have come to the conclusion they are of the same DNA.....just different personalities

To be honest, they feel near identical, but mine is sharper and has less roll due to my upgrades, but other than, top marks for both flavours.

Imo, if you looking to mod the car - G60. If you want a nice nippy std car go for the Vr

In Std form I'd say the VR is a better car overall, handles well, & is 200bhp off the shelf. For me I prefer my modded G60, more power for your £ when modding a charged car.

All horses for courses.

Depends what you want out of the car. If you told us that, then we could probably recommend ether car easier.

Cheers

Dan

Hi guys.

Just my 2p worth ... go for the VR6 if you like your engines standard.

Go the G60 route if you like modding your cars.

PS you may recognise my car in the avatar ... it looks like AndyVR6's pic ... but it's mine now mwahahaha :p

PS Andy when we gonna see your new car in your avatar :?:
