around 10k on a car - but what???

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am thinking about getting a new car, and struggling to find something i like. So what you buy for around the 10k mark?

I dont want to get rid of the Corrado, and probably wont. There just isnt any other cars on the road that make me say i want that!! like i did with the corrado. Apart from a 993 Turbo but then im just dreaming!!

The options are get something a little more modern and comfortable than the Corrado (please the girlfriend) or something a little bit special and out of the ordinary. I have toyed with the idea of a cerbera but until im 25 i aint got a chance of insuring it at areasonable price!

so obviously i want some performance with it, not the usual run of the mill, possibly a classic and not Jap.

What do you reckon??

Think it would be a B5 RS4 for me for 10k.

Either that or a nicely modded B5 S4 Avant and a few quid in the bank for maintenance.

E46 M3 is another alternative but then id always hanker for a CSL if i had one!!

No way will 10k get a decent 911 or Integrale, Z3M is a good choice but I'd be wary of their main fault - the boot floor being ripped out by the torque.

I'd go slightly more classic / less performance:

Renault Alpine A610

OR

Merc R129 - great used feature in last weeks Autocar, 10k will get a lovely 300 / 500SL - built like a tank and unlikely to depreciate - fantastic parts backup as well

OR

A late Jaguar XJ-S - finding them strangely appealling nowadays, definitely aged really well

Shame you're discounting Jap. Could get a very sorted Evo 7 or a pretty standard 8 for that budget. Then again insurance won't be cheap for you if you're under 25.

Yea been under 25 is a real bummer on the insurance matter! Nice suggestions guys, im still totally unsure though!

Im not totally against jap 100% but i just dont think they are nice looking cars, imo.

Proper drivers cars - personally see no appeal in Jap / Euro boxes that do everything for you - wheres the sense of achievement - must be gettinbg old because an XJ-S or R129 appeal to me :D

Yea i think out of them 3 the merc is the only one i could see myself in, Personally i think you need to be at least 50 to buy a jag! I do prefer cubic capacity over electrical wizardry!

The 3200 is a seriously bad idea.. my old boss had one, and it was a great car, but the cost of repairs/service is insane..

What size of car do you want?

S2k/Elise/Z3M Coupe all great small cars

S3 for hatchback

M3/S4/Mitzi Evo for Saloon

S8 for the big dogs..

i'm very happy with my e39 m5. insurance will be a bit of a bitch, but i pay £950 for mine and i'm 26; it pays to shop around.

i can also put in a very good word for an evo 6, but the mrs won't be very happy with that one...

to get decent m5 you'll be looking around the 10k mark. they are available cheaper, but you want the post 2001 car with the revisions (angel eyes, better interior/steering wheels, revisions to pistons/piston rings) as they are nicer and hold their value a bit better.

runnings costs are fairly horrific, but they're definitely worth it and if you get an example with the expensive bits done already (brakes, clutch etc) then you shouldn't have to worry too much...

here's a couple of examples:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2060201.htm (very well priced, if a little high mileage)

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2013360.htm

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1983986.htm

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1968944.htm (most sorted looking one IMO)

alternatively the e46 m3 is also a great car. little more expensive to buy and much less exclusive, but i would heartily recommend one of theose too...

not keen on the saab, any thoughts on the masersti 3200??? 370bhp and i just love the back of them! http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2025331.htm

I LOVE it, i've been planning to get one for a few years now, but just cant afford the running costs. The 4200 is a stronger car, the 3200 can be a bit fragile, but it doenst have those boomerang lights. Plus its about 8k more. According to the forum, you need about 3k/year to run it. What does that cover? No idea, perhaps just fuel! A few of teh issues are chains (!!!), clutch and front axle bushes. Cant remember anything else, but i'll have a search again and let you know.
