dubweiser 0 Posted September 28, 2010 Hi guys,i am going to (or was going to) change my rear brake discs and pads this week.I got the new discs and i was assuming they would be held on with a small retaining screw like the front ones, but theres no screw holes in them.So am i right in now thinking that its not going to be as straightforward as taking the old ones off and putting the new ones on? :( How are the rear disc held on if not by a retaining screw and is it a bad job to attempt? I tried searching on here but couldnt seem to find any info :? Thanks for the help guys
davidwort 0 Posted September 28, 2010 have a look at my steps here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=19344&start=15#p931739 the rear disks have the taper bearing races pressed/tapped in place, totally different to the front hubs.

V-Dubstar 0 Posted September 28, 2010 Yeh ud have to hammer the $hit out of the old bearing races to get them out, wouldn't be worth it unless ur Gandalf of the bearing world. DON'T get bearings from anywhere other than VW tho mate, I have learned as have many others, it just doesn't pay!!
carrots 1 Posted September 28, 2010 i put unipart in mine ,not had a problem
dubweiser 0 Posted September 28, 2010 Massive thanks again davidwort its much appreciated.I just rang my local automotive suppliers place up and they said they were listed as a standard vw rear bearing kit.(does this sound right?cos everything else ive had to buy for the car always seems to be a specialist bit made for the corrado, bloody awkward thing ha ha)
V-Dubstar 0 Posted September 28, 2010 A lot of VW's use them, mk3's do I know that much. Fair one carrots, I had GSF ones in my rado and one went after 6months, so VAG all the way for me from now on
dubweiser 0 Posted September 28, 2010 Cheers for the info guys, you have saved my bacon!! and a lot of shouting and swearing no doubt lol. Just a quickie,am i right in assuming the calipers wind in clockwise?
carrots 1 Posted September 28, 2010 i am 99% sure they do
davidwort 0 Posted September 28, 2010 if you look in my gallery thread for the disk change (buried in there admittedly) I say: halfords caliper wind back tool (clockwise version £20) makes life so easy and fits VW calipers perfectly hang on, I just quoted myself
Supercharged 2 Posted September 28, 2010 Rear brakes are a lot more involved than fronts and usually ending up costing more too... At minimum you need discs, bearings, pads, carrier bolts and ABS cages if fitted. You also want to think about spalsh sheilds, new calipers, carriers, handbrake cables, bias valve, brake pipes, abs sensors etc etc...
dubweiser 0 Posted September 28, 2010 Supercharged, stop it,your scaring me now lol

bbewekim 0 Posted October 21, 2010 I attempted this today. Easy as pie job... apart from the carrier bolts being allen heads... WHY!! Got one side off, even though one bolt was already butchered. The other side is impossible... Both bolds have been destroyed, anyone have any suggestions on a good tool to sort out dead bolts on these cars? Access is restricted to say the least! I am hoping to replace the bolts can they be sourced from VW? What are the specs if i got them from an independant company? My ETKA isnt working :(. Well hacked off :( freezing cold and the only day in a while i could replace the discs/ pads and bushes :(. Current discs are pooped.
davidwort 0 Posted October 21, 2010 irwin bolt grippers or similar are the recommended medicine :)
bbewekim 0 Posted October 21, 2010 They even sort out Allen heads? Any one got info in the tread size etc to replace the bolts? Thanks for the above
Supercharged 2 Posted October 21, 2010 Yeah they will get them off in seconds - homebase sell them if you need them quickly... Those bolts - only had an issue with them once on some rusty old heap of a MK2, VW say replace every time - it's when they are re-used you get problems and they should only be taken off using a proper allen socket. They are a fine threaded M10 10.9 strength bold so it's VW only for these really - standard ones will corrode too easily too... If you order ones from a late MK3 Golf they are 50p each rather than £2 for the Corrado ones!
