The top cap just stops the strut from falling through the hole when jacked up :D Only the MK1 has bolt in top mounts IIRC. Correct.... they go coilbound (fully compressed) as soon as the car's weight is dropped down on them. I remember the low riders back in the day binning the helpers to get the cars extra low.
