Changing wheel bearing woes??

Recommended Posts

Hi guys just dropping a thread regarding changing my rear wheel bearing that now makes a hideous whining noise!! I have bought a Febi Bilstien bearing after reading your views... I am just wondering if it is worth a go ( I have worked on VW engined military Pinzgauers for a couple of years , but now live away at uni) so I dont have any specialist tools :( and dont want o get stuck half way through the task!!!! If any of you guys have any tips or methods to help doing this please drop a post. Many Thanks guys!!!

I always use a punch and hammer to drive the old ones out, there's a little lip inside the disc you can get the punch onto. Suitable sized socket and hammer to drive the new ones in. Remember not to overtighten them. You do them hand tight, a bit more to settle them, then back of the nut until you can move the washer with a screwdriver. There's loads more info on here. Readjust in a few hundred miles.

As he said, just need a punch/drift with a sharp edge and it's a doodle. You can tell when the race is seated as the sound is distinctly more metallic when you hit it and you can feel the shock through the drift more sharply.
