Compression test? 2.0L 16v

Recommended Posts

Changed lots of bits on my car now but still runs a bit lumpy. Anybody got any advice on a compression test?

Could it be something wrong with the valves?

What advice are you looking for? It does seem like it'd be something worth getting done - not especially time consuming / expensive to do :)

What bits have you swapped so far and when / how is the car lumpy? It seems to be something of a dark art getting a 2.0 16v running nicely!

I have changed the distributer, distributer cap, rotor arm, spark plugs, air flow metre, new fuel pump, cleaned fuel lines, rocker cover gasket, central silencer, retune engine, clean injectors, cam gasket and cleaned the throttle body.

The car revs up and down but not as much now I've changed the parts. you can really feel the car rock when turning the engine off. Just want to know if anybody had done a compression test on a 2.0L 16v 9A and what was the outcome. I think It might be a dodgy valve, maybe not ceiling properly?

Just get it checked, as long as the compression is roughly even across all 4 it should be fine. Is one plug more fouled up than the others?

Worth checking and cleaning out the idle control valve and the switch on the throttle body that triggers the idle circuit/control.

More than likely you have tired injectors, no amount of redex will sort those out, it's not too involved to pull them all out, and spray them into bottles to check the flow and spray pattern, something else you can rule out at no cost.

replaced the idle control valve with a new one. The injectors were pulled out and cleaned as well. Yeah plug one when pulled out is a bit mucky with oil on it.

K-jet injectors can't really be revived, you could run them in an ultrasonic cleaner with the valves pressurised open but they actually wear out and the spray pattern can be seriously affected regardless as to whether they've been cleaned.

They'll go on for many miles over 100K but the car will run so much better generally on new ones, having said that, it's pretty unusual for fuelling to produce cylinder specific problems on k-jet, far more likely to be mechanical (valve guides, pistons/rings) or electrical if one cylinder shows problems, like with your plug no. 1.

going on from above, which plugs are you using? This will have an effect, especially if one has broken down
