Dash ABS Light On & Off

Recommended Posts

Hi - I have a 1993 Corrado - 2L 16V

I got the rear wheel brake disks and pads replaced a year ago and ever since the orange ABS light on the dash goes on and off when starting the engine up.

Example 1 - you start the engine up and the light comes on as normal for the 2 seconds to show that its working and then goes out

Example 2 - you start the engine up and the light comes on and stays on, but you turn the engine off and on again and the light would go off again????

If I keep my foot on the brake pedal when starting - I can feel the ABS pump move the brake pedal.

Anyway - I got someone to check it and they could not see what the problem was?

Any Ideas on what to check, or how to check the ABS fluid.

Thanks

Check the air gap clearance between the wheel speed sensors and the ABS wheel rings / cages, fitted to the back of the rear brake discs. These symptoms could also be caused if these cages are insecure, damaged or damaged in some way. Another cause could be if the rear wheel bearings are incorrectly adjusted, or worn then this wlll have the effect of making the air gap continually variable. This should give a start, with some the causes I have seen for this problem over the years.

get your error codes read with vagcom.

I had this same problem and it was my front passenger hub nut coming undone and varying the distance to the sensor.

Changed the bearing and nut problem solved

I had this - sometimes the light would come on (and stay on) immediately, sometimes it would go off and come on after a few miles of driving. I got one of the rear ABS sensors replaced as it was giving an error in VAG-COM, but it wasn't fixed until I had both rear wheel bearings done and got new ABS cages at the same time - the light stayed on for a long while (~100 miles!) and then went off forever :)

The cages aren't dear - I got the last two from VW Spares and they were £7.25 ex VAT each. Worth trying before you start fiddling with sensors as that gets expensive! Apparently they never come out in one piece...
