G60 charger rebuild, best options.

Recommended Posts

Right, I've decided I have to get my charger rebuilt now for piece of mind. My car has done 70K miles and is running perfectly, I'd like to keep it that way.

I'm a very competent mechanic, however I've never tackled a G-ladder rebuild myself, done turbo's no problem, but the G-ladder charger is another kettle of fish again.

Do I buy a kit and do it myself?

Or do I give the charger to someone experienced to rebuild?

The way I look at it is, the time it would take me to rebuild the charger could be spent working, earning more money than the labour on a rebuild. Then all I'd have to do is remove/refit the unit and wouldn't risk cocking the rebuild up.

There's a guy in the states offering what seems like a good service. Link below, has anyone here dealt with him. I've been in touch with the guy and he seems very straight up and knows what he's talking about.

Or, is there anyone one in the UK offering a similar service?

Yeah, I'm very apprehensive about sending my charger overseas, the customs and and insurance issues alone are a nightmare.

Dochy, is the guy you mention on here? Would much rather deal with a UK bod, does he offer any sort of warranty?

This guy specializes in g60's http://www.onlychargeddubs.co.uk/Services.html

Thanks again.

Looks like there's no need to send my charger overseas, I did have a quick look on Google and couldn't seem to find any small business's doing rebuilds in the UK. I'd much rather give my charger to a small one man operation as I feel the level of service is better.

All I want is a basic rebuild as I will not be be tuning my G60 with pulley's and chip sets etc, I like it just as it is and I have the S2 to play with which is monstrously powerful.

For 300 quid I'd rather give it to one of the guys mentioned above As like I said I can spend the time it would have taken me working on customers cars earning the money to pay for someone who know's what their doing to do the job. Part of me want's to do it myself as I'm very curious to see the inner workings and learn how these units are put together, however I'd be really gutted if I cocked it up. I like the idea of having some sort of warranty as well.

Corrado now safely tucked up in secure dry storage for a month whilst I get the charger rebuilt by John, got a few little cash job's to do on mates cars that I'm going to use to fund the rebuild and postage expense's as well as proper insurance.

When the Corrado went into my unit the MK II 16V Golf came out to play. Forgot how much fun they are, OK, the Corrado is sooooo much more refined, quite and comfortable. Generally a superior car. However the Golf feel's like a rocket powered go kart in comparison, so much more chuckable, it's no quicker than the Corrado but I'd be faster round a track in the Golf.

Still, I can't wait to get the charger done, once that's been ticked of the list the car is virtually new, I've done everything else, right down to new brake fluid, thorough coolant system flush followed with new VAG long-life coolant, all new filters, all belts, engine and gearbox oil. All the bushes and shocks/springs are like new, this car has had one seriously easy life. Which is nice.

Yeah, I've heard of them but I'd rather use a one man operation like myself (I'm an independent VAG specialist mechanic) as I feel one receives a better level of service. I had a long chat with John yesterday and I've decided to go with him, I like his attitude and general manner.

I was very tempted to do it myself as I'd love to have a look at the inner workings. However my time would be better spent working on customers cars and there's no risk of me cocking it up.

Going to remove it next weekend. hopefully I can afford to send the unit on to John the week after, I LOVE my Golf MK II GTi 16V but I want the G60 back on the road by the end of May. Got to have it for the summer, going to go over too the Isle of Mann for the the Manx GP from August the 18th - Sept 2, Awesome bike racing and a lot less crowded and expensive then the TT.

Yep, I agree. Best leave something so specialist and delicate to a person with plenty of experience. Plus John offers a warranty which is a major plus point in my book. I'm sure Jabba do as well but I've made my decision and I'm going with JMR.

Love the condition of your 8V mate, she's got the the makings of excellent example. Right I best get on with it,:thumbleft:

I've got enough to keep me busy all weekend with that boot load of parts you have given me.
