How hot should a KR 16v run?

I've just this afternoon picked up my 90 G plate 16v and on the way back the temp gauge was a little erratic.

 

From cold it went and sat just below the 90 mark (middle thick line) as we headed into traffic it went upto just under the 100 and on the mway dropped down to just above 70.

 

Is this normal? It's my first Corrado but I've had 16v mk2 golfs before and don't remember them doing that!

Sounds like a ropey stat, should stay pretty much bang on midway all the time, radiator temp switch might not be behaving on both temp switching points for the two speed rad fan either.
