Smiithy 10 Posted March 20, 2013 Hi all, I have sprung an oil leak from one of the sensors ontop of the oil filter housing. I assume this is an oil pressure sensor. I have looked everywhere and cant locate one of these other than ebay, where the 2options for a "black" sensor are 0.15-0.5 bar or 1.16-1.5 bar. Can anybody give me the definitive answer to which one i need? Picture shows sensor arrowed. Thanks
bmwcompact 10 Posted March 20, 2013 They are both oil pressure switches. The low pressure one is 0.3 bar and the high pressure is 1.8 bar. The white one should be the high pressure. If you remove one of them it will have the pressure marked on it. They are renown for leaking. You would be well advised to replace them both whilst you are at it-they dont cost a fortune! Smiithy 10 Posted March 20, 2013 Thanks, so where do i find its pressure range? On the threaded part? or on the bottom of the bolt head? as i have spoke to TPS and the part dosent even exist, ECP and GSF cant help either. All i can find is.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Corrado-53I-2-0-1-16-1-55-BAR-Intermotor-Oil-Pressure-Switch-Gauge-Sensor-/350624455819?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3ACorrado&hash=item51a2d89c8b http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Corrado-53I-2-0-0-20-0-40-BAR-Intermotor-Oil-Pressure-Switch-Gauge-Sensor-/330813306201?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3ACorrado&hash=item4d06027559 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Corrado-53I-2-0-0-15-0-43-BAR-Intermotor-Oil-Pressure-Switch-Gauge-Sensor-/230867722887?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3ACorrado&hash=item35c0c9e287 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Corrado-53I-2-0-1-53-1-93-BAR-Intermotor-Oil-Pressure-Switch-Gauge-Sensor-/230867726059?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3ACorrado&hash=item35c0c9eeeb 2 are black and others are white and blue. So i assume its one of the black ones but the pressure difference is 1 bar. Also another thing that leads me to disagree with you saying its low pressure is the amount of oil that comes out of it when the engine is running, not fountains but more than half a bar in my opinion, i may be wrong. Smiithy 10 Posted March 20, 2013 Seems a subject that nobody knows about :( surely somebody must know. its a 9a btw.
bmwcompact 10 Posted March 20, 2013 My answer couldnt be clearer what more do you want?? After market oil sensor may come in different colours but its their value that counts. I too have a 9a. Ignition on, oil light on cos no pressure. Engine starts, light goes out cos 0.3 bar reached. Move off and engine revs rise, pressure gets to 1.8, so light stays off. If it doesnt get to 1.8, then light comes on buzzer comes on and you stop the car else you ruin your engine. Both sensor will see whatever pressure is in the system. It just so happens in your case its the one that reads low pressure thats sprung a leak:its seeing whatever pressure is there not 0.3bar. Buy whatever is for a VW and reads nominally 0.3 bar-you are spoilt for choice either ebay or link below (buy the 0.25 blue and the 1.8 white) http://www.vwspares.co.uk/corrado_switches.php
Smiithy 10 Posted March 20, 2013 Thanks mate, i have ordered one from heritage vw now as i have had 2 independent sources (classic water cooled vw specialists), both sent the picture and both returned to me i needed the 1.2 - 1.6 bar sensor. It would never be the blue sensor it would be one of the 2 blacks and it seems to be the higher value one. Not saying you dont know your stuff and you may be right and i may install the new one and it not work correctly, but for now ive followed the advice given. many thanks for your replys though. bmwcompact 10 Posted March 20, 2013 I have in my hand my old black front oil pressure sensor. I removed it last year because it was leaking. It reads 0.15-0.45 bar (nominally 0.3bar). I have on my car ( 9a ), a rear white high pressure sensor (nominally 1.8 bar) and a front blue front low pressure sensor (nominally 0.3 bar).
Smiithy 10 Posted March 20, 2013 Well from what ive been told the blue sensor fits into the head of the 9a, the grey is not for a 9a, and the black is 1.2-1.6 from factory. Also you will find you have no problem as your sensor will only buzz if the pressure drops below 0.1 bar, where-as the black 1.2-1.6 will buss below 1.2bar as it should. This is what ive been told via a guy whos been working on mk2's mk1's and rados for 20+ years.

clumpy1 11 Posted March 20, 2013 I have to say i haven't been on here long but it is the first time i have seen Wullie react in this way he is normally very laid back and quite funny at times you could have saved everyone's time on here and phoned wherever you got the bum information from first. You will learn the hard way as the next time you have a problem you know nothing about and you ask on here you may find :tumbleweed:
jonnykillpop 10 Posted March 24, 2013 I bought both sensors for a VR6 from Eurocarparts maybe 3 months ago, had them in stock on day.
Smiithy 10 Posted March 25, 2013 Firstly i appologise if my reply was taken in the wrong mannor, i did not mean to sound like a keyboard warrior i was just trying to pass on information. Turns out that it was the 0.3 bar sensor needed and what i had been told was utter crap. Im not one of those guys who poo-poo everyone and do not want to be seen in that mannor, so i hope this appology is accepted. So for anybody else with this problem who wants the definative awnser the guy perviously was correct its the 0.3 bar sensor (this should be brown). bmwcompact 10 Posted March 25, 2013 My only interest in posting answers to questions is to help and encourage those who wish to learn/do their own maintenance. However I also consider it essential that information presented here is correct: these posts will be used by others in the months/years to come. Unfortunately the variations between the different models: Golf 2 in all its variants, Corrado 1.8/2 16v and VR6 often results in incorrect info being offered in good faith, either here or elsewhere. Personally I have adopted the habit of saying 'I think', 'I believe' or 'from memory' if I am not 100% sure of my information. I assume the car is now sorted. Lets hope we get some good weather so we can enjoy driving them: mine goes back on the road next Monday!
RitchieR32 10 Posted March 26, 2013 Are you sure it's the sensor and not the copper ring between the oilpressure sensor and the oil filter housing that's the problem?
vwchimp 10 Posted April 12, 2014 Im having a problem with my light and buzzer coming on while driving. It is very intermittent. It starts when I'm just doing a steady speed but if I get above 2500rpm it goes out again and leaves me in peace. Any ideas guy's??
