Erallus 10 Posted March 25, 2013 Hi all, Lately my Vr6 has started cutting out when cold. It doesn't get used much at the moment, once every two weeks due to weather. Its also got quite a rough idle, but once it warms up its fine. I've heard that Vr6's can have a rough idle at times, but is this normal? May see about taking it to a specialist. VW_OwneR_85 2 Posted March 25, 2013 (edited) try changeing the blue temp sender {for ecu} in the thermostat houseing , there not that expensive and you can quickly change it in under 5mins without having to drain out the coolant, just undo the expansion cap to release pressure and then skrew it back down, unclip the wireing plug from the sender and then pull the clip out that holds it in place , have your new sender with o-ring ready and swap them over as fast as you can without looseing to much coolant, just make sure the engines cold and not hot... taken from the vr6 cooling guide Blue, 2-pin plug. VAG part number 025 906 041 A (about £8, plus O-ring N 903 168 02) ECU (always there) Edited March 25, 2013 by VW_OwneR_85
nrc 0 Posted March 26, 2013 Also worth having a look at the ISV.

Ian, I changed the ISV about 18 months ago (E Bay one) so doubt if it is that but might be worth cleaning it. I did mention to the garage the Blue Temp Sender when the Rad was changed but from memory I don't think it was changed, probably best place to start? Ian. Erallus 10 Posted March 12, 2014 (edited) Just an update on this one, I changed the blue temp sensor, that didn't seem to do anything (although the old one looked very old, so still worthwhile methinks), gave the ISV a clean, which sorted the issue for a week or two, but now its back. I have a spare ISV, so I'm going to swap these out, see what happens Cheers again for the help Edited March 12, 2014 by Erallus
Erallus 10 Posted July 9, 2014 Update: Changing the ISV for a Bosch one seems to have done the trick. Left it for a week, started first thing in the morning, no issues! The one already fitted wasn't branded, so I'm not sure if it was good quality, or possibly even original, either way, sorted! Just need to sort the miss fire, rust on the boot and the radiator Fan that's getting very loud and rusty. :bonk:

fendervg 33 Posted July 9, 2014 Do you happen to have the Bosch part number for the ISV that fixed this? Thanks.
Stonejag 10 Posted July 9, 2014 Please sort the rad fan first - when the bearings go they can seize, and I've had two catch fire so far... Misfire is almost always the coilpack - GSF do own-brand ones for about £60 if that helps? Stone
Erallus 10 Posted July 10, 2014 What are your misfire symptoms? Cheers for the response At warm idle (doesn't seem happen when cold), I can hear and see a spark off the HT lead/Plug on cylinder 2 or 4 (can't remember which one right now - deffo on the front left side : P). This causes a slight pop from the exhaust. I was thinking Coilpack or HT leads, I'll possibly order both, I'll no doubt need to replace both at some stage in the future, so no harm in having a set... I have two fire extinguishers in the car, but I have nice re-furbished set ready to fit, and I'm going to sort my current set as a spare. cheers for the coil pack recommendation :thumbleft:
Jim 2 Posted July 10, 2014 So it's coming from the spark plug end of the wire, or from the coil pack end? As you say probably worth swapping the leads first :)
GlosterOx 0 Posted July 10, 2014 I put another (S/H) coilpack on it Ian just a few months before I sold it, like Jim I'd say HT Leads first - Dubpower ones are good value and rated highly? Ian.
