J-ME 10 Posted March 28, 2013 1.8 16v my guide was bruk so I ordered a new one off of eBay and it now sits here Is this too high?? If its correct I have no oil lol
sankysvr6 0 Posted March 28, 2013 In my g60 it's about high as the hose, in your pic. Don't you have the old broken one to measure against the new, to check its length is correct and also if the stop on the plastic is at the same level.
J-ME 10 Posted March 28, 2013 The only bit that is left from the old red one is about the size of a jelly ring from some haribo star mix And hose height was were it was before but there was nothing holding it in, it just jiggled about and was probably breathing oil out from it ha
bmwcompact 10 Posted March 29, 2013 Dont know why 1.8 owners haven't answered. On my 2l 16v top of dipstick is level with the underside of the radiator guard. When I fitted my guide I thought it was seated when in fact in needed to be pushed down hard to properly locate. I wouldn't want you to break yours forcing it if its already correctly located, but if it is too high that could be the reason??????
Wullie 1 Posted March 29, 2013 (edited) Pic of my KR dipstick The distance from the base of the dipstick tube to the bottom of the plastic guide is approximately 18.5 cm. It was kind of difficult to get a proper measurement. The plastic guide is roughly 7.5 cm long. Looking at the reciept it gives the description as "Funnel" and a part number of W050 103 663. Oh, and it cost a whole £2.81 inc VAT from VW. bmwcompact is right to in that it needs a firm push too get it on properly Edited March 29, 2013 by Wullie
J-ME 10 Posted March 30, 2013 Just measured it, 185mm to the bottom most part of the guide, but as it had been left alone since 4pm last night, the oil was just showing on the bottom of the stick, Should I chuck a litre in??
Wullie 1 Posted March 30, 2013 Your dipstick looks higher than mine. I'd be loath to put more oil in as too much can be as bad as too little. I assume you're not getting any warnings. I'm on the phone at the moment indulging in free red wine and Alex at the moment. I'llama try and remember and post some more measurement tomorrow. Wullie 1 Posted March 31, 2013 About 7 inches. 6 and a half if it's cold. You are boasting now, and the llama in the previous post is predictive text. How the frell do you turn it off!! Now for more poetry and red wine. ---------- Post added at 2:11 AM ---------- Previous post was at 2:08 AM ---------- And Alex should be ale. I'm now panicking about what kinf of gibberish I've been sending people.
Wullie 1 Posted March 31, 2013 Been out with my ruler. Dipstick from tip to seating flange 415mm Dipstick tube from engine block to top of orange tube 275mm Dipstick tube from engine block to bottom of orange tube 205mm Length of orange doofer 70mm Hopefully enough measurements to let you work out what's what.
J-ME 10 Posted March 31, 2013 The tip to seating flange, was that the top of dipstick to where the tube enters the block? Mine only measures 405mm to the top and everything else is exactly the same, So using my higher intellect and superior working stuff out powers I'm low on oil
Wullie 1 Posted March 31, 2013 Dipstick from tip to seating flange 415mm is the length of the actual dipstick itself from the tip to the botttom of the flange on the red part that stops it going into the tube. From where the dipstick tube joins the block to the top of the loop on the dipstick measures 380mm. If the measurements are the same then yeah, you're short on oil. Strange though that in your picture the dipstick does seem higher than mine. Now wonders if mine is the one that's not right.
J-ME 10 Posted March 31, 2013 Nope 405 was the measurement to the top most part of the dipstick when seated, The orange doofer is 70mm so it would seem that mine is 25 mm longer than yours, does your orange doofer spin fairly easily?
Wullie 1 Posted March 31, 2013 No, mine is firm, it sounds as if it is not pushed on enough. It's been a while sine I replaced mine but I think it pushed on and seemed to seat then required another dunt to get it fully on.
Stonejag 10 Posted March 31, 2013 I've the same question about VR6es now, there's no guide at all on my dipstick tube (:camp:) so I wonder if I've got it sitting too low and under-filling it. Should there be one? Stone

Wullie 1 Posted March 31, 2013 I didn't hit it with anything. I put a rag over the end to protect my hand and leant on it.
J-ME 10 Posted April 6, 2013 Just realised my dipstick does this, how should it be? On or off??
Wullie 1 Posted April 6, 2013 That's the top half of your old broken guide/funnel so should be off.
Supercharged 2 Posted April 6, 2013 (edited) LOL, yeah that will explain it... Always get new guides from VW, not expensive and much better fit than pattern ones! Part Number of yours is now 053 103 663 as Wullie found Edited April 6, 2013 by Supercharged

Supercharged 2 Posted April 6, 2013 Totally lost for words!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Worrying thing is if the car was sold / bought like it then the oil levels not been correct for ages!
Stonejag 10 Posted April 6, 2013 This is weird. Picked up a new guide funnel on eBay but it doesn't feel like a correct fit to my spare dipstick - which is the ring-ended type (021 115 611L). The ring clashes with the rim of the guide funnel. Did I just get sold the wrong part or is it supposed to be like that? I bought this one: link Looks like it might fit a dipstick with the flattened triangular top (as in the above posts) though. Might try test-fitting it tomorrow... Stone
