jedi-knight83 0 Posted May 13, 2004 Not mine.... but a friend with a VR6 has been told the noise is gear box related and will cost £1600 to put right (i've already talked to Phat about maybe upgrading to the 6speed) This quote was from Cowley Rd Garage in Cambs (respected VW place) so i doubt there ripping him off. Does anyone know (and can recomend) and gearbox places in east anglia.? im not even 100% sure what the problem was...its just really noisey and they said it needs a re-con
dr_mat 0 Posted May 13, 2004 You can buy a used VR6 box for MUCH less than that, and it'll be good for another 50k miles...
PhatVR6 0 Posted May 13, 2004 used box for about £150-200, rebuild for £400. Are they quoting for a brand new box or something?
dr_mat 0 Posted May 13, 2004 Those prices are much more like it. Although the rebuild might be a bit more expensive darn sarf...
Henny 0 Posted May 13, 2004 £1600 ?!? what's up with it?!? My complete rebuild with LSD AND sourcing a VR6 gearbox to strip apart came in less than that! It's not an auto is it?
Supercharged 2 Posted May 13, 2004 If he's in Cambs anyways it would be well worth a trip up to Stealth...
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 13, 2004 He's probably talking about a rattling noise at idle when the clutch pedal is up. That'll be either layshaft or output shaft bearings or in rare cases, the input shaft bearing. It's not a major thing. They can go on forever making that noise. Certainly not £1600 worth of work. jedi-knight83 0 Posted May 13, 2004 He's probably talking about a rattling noise at idle when the clutch pedal is up. no!! were talking serious nasty grinding noise in any gear at most speeds! i'll let him know it may be a cheaper but its probably worth a call / trip to stealth
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 13, 2004 Might have been wise to tell us that at the start  Nevermind, yep, Stealth will do a full rebuild for around the £550 mark. If the gears themselves have chipped teeth etc, their may be an additional charge as they cost £120+VAT each new!
