stalling problem

Recommended Posts

Hi chaps, my 94 2.0 16v has started stalling occasionaily, usually when the engine is warm and when pulling up to traffic lights the revs just die out and engine stalls. Sometimes the revs will die right down but pickup again before it stalls (sometimes the battery light wil flash on for a second) . Any idea's what this could be? It doesn't do it very often but its making dread stopping in traffic incase the engine stalls.

also not to sure if this is connected as the local garage told me that this would not be connected to the problem but i have just had my immobilizer removed and i know that some of the immobilizer connections were made through G1 on the fuse board,as G1 is responsible for things such as fuel pump could the fact that a yellow and red wire coming down from the ecu is not connected to anything be the cause? also since the immobilizer has been taken out i am lacking power.?

My 92 2.0 16v is the same, however mine seems to be worse when cold. It also sometimes lacks power below 2k rpm when pulling away when its playing up. Most of the time its faultless. I read some bumph on an ebay listing that suggests the stalling is related to the MAF, but I don't know but would like to.

yea mine only seems to be occasional. mine is showing signs that the isv valve is causing my problem. but i think that when the immobilizer was removed maybe a wire responsible for the isv vale has been damaged or cut. but im struggling to identify that wire

Ah i see. How much was it? Its still stalling? Umm what do you think is causing it?

gave £30 for it from someone on here and it seems to idle better, but still does the lacking power bit sometimes. Try taking the ISV off and cleaning through with brake cleaner to see if that helps.

Yea i did that and i thought it had helped but then it has started stalling again. I don't want to just replace parts for the sake of it. I've spent about two grand on it over two years. (that's just replacing parts lol)

Would benefit the isv to be left over night in carb cleaner . They are a right pain, mine will stall every now and again .

Hi, My 9a 16v suffered from stalling when I first brought it, it turned out to be the idle switch on the throttle body was not working, changed it and it has been fine ever since (probably just jinxed it now!)

Ok mate. Where about is that located on the throttle body? Did you have to replace the throttle body itself? Also is there any electrical wires to it?

ok so today i took some readings using a multi meter and played around with a few things...( normally makes matters worse )

after i had took the air flow pipes of and cleaned them through and made sure they were reconnected correctly and checked all sensor plugs (condition and how they were connected) i took the car out for a good drive..the erratic idling seemed to be gone but i still stalled at the lights..

here are the multi meter readings and i will try to upload pics of what i took the readings from.

ok so the plug on the end of the ivs sensor reads 13.34

the plug on the air sensor..i will upload of a pic of this as i dont know the correct name..read 13.37

my alternator reads 13.83

my headlights read 13.80

a blue sensor reads 13.37

like i said i will try to upload a few pics

but i still can not work out why the old girl is just stalling

i am now going to try and use the multimeter on the fusebox.. not sure if this is poss but i need to know if somewhere there is something missing or going wrong

ok so i have this red and yellow wire that is now not connected to anything after i have taken out my immobilizer. i have just put the multi meter on it and when the engine is running its reading 12.55 so surly this red and yellow wire should be connected to something??? i have uploaded a pic of it. the wire comes down alongside the wires that go into G1....i have checked the central electrical online page and it notes a red and yellow wire in G1.03 or G1 04...but there already is a black wire in that port.....I AM SO CONFUSED

can someone please advise me on the location of this wire?? could this wire be the cause of the stalling?

Hello mate. I'll check the Bentley book later today to see if I can identify it although in the meantime if you're getting 12v off it then its a switched live and at the very least needs to be covered up or it'll short on the car. I'll drop you a line later when I've found out what it is.

All the best.

Hey Jim :)...I've also lost a live feed to my millometer...every time i turn the engine on and off the clock and millometer resets itself

Hi, The throttle switch is a separate part, it has 3 wires going to it just under the inlet pipe on the throttle housing. I just brought a complete throttle housing and swapped it over. Hope you get it sorted! regards, Jochen.

I think (from looking at the Bentley) that the red wire with yellow stripe would have gone to the alarm system and is the central locking activation. Cover the end up and leave it; I don't think it will cause a problem.

Your clocks losing power and resetting means that the permanent live circuit has been broken, either by the perm live feed or the ground being loose or disconnected. I would check your earths still as it sounds like its still the issue.

Jim

So just an update guys. Been down to the car today. Went through the engine bay and found all obvious earth connections. Cleaned them all up. Covered that red and yellow wire that is inside the drivers side of the car...the one that Jim has advised me to cover up. Took the car for a drive. Idling lovely. Didnt stall once..but its early days yet. Shall see how i get on during the week. Did find a oil leak tho...finish one job and start another lol
