Brunty's Dad 10 Posted November 1, 2014 Collected my VR6 last evening after sheep damage repair and drove to the supermarket. Returning to the car with a case of beer turned the key and - nothing. No noise from the solenoid and the lights did not dim. AA patrolman arrived to find no current at the solenoid. He wired up a direct battery starting wire and suggested that the cause of the problem could be the starter relay. I have searched all the literature that I can find but no mention of a relay in the system. Anyone else had experience of this problem. Any advice appreciated. seanl82 23 Posted November 1, 2014 Ignition switch mate. Are you with the car now? Try starting it and wiggle the key whilst it's turned. Very common fault.
Brunty's Dad 10 Posted November 1, 2014 Thanks, It started with a wiggle. Is there a tutorial on the forum for changing the ignition barrel?
seanl82 23 Posted November 1, 2014 Here you go mate. They're available from VW for about £25. http://wiki.the-corrado.net/ignition_switch_replacement.html
JAM11E 10 Posted November 1, 2014 I had the same problem,I got a new ignition switch from VW, took me 15minutes. The biggest PITA is the little brass screw, I chiselled it off and replaced with a cable tie. I used to get mine to start by hitting the switch when turning the key
