Scott 0 Posted April 24, 2003 Is there a specific procedure to the above? I don't want to cause any air blocks  Not as a rule no.... but the best way to do it.... Draining: Remove hose clip from top rad pipe and drain... remove bottom rad hose clip and drain... remove and replace stat (worth doing)... then connect it all back up - you'll find removing cap will help water drain out quicker...... Refilling: Connect all hoses back up.... fill up with 50/50 mix of anti freeze... mix it BEFORE you tip it in *:).... then fill up to full mark.... put heater on full blast hot... then start car with cap still off.... run up to full op temp (when stat opens) then switch off.... top up to full mark again and replace cap - job done *:)

G60Jet 1 Posted April 25, 2003 You SHOULD do this according to VW To Drain the system First Run the car to normal operating temperature untill the termostat opens, open heater control up to full heat. Now disconnect the Bottem Rad hose (you are ment to disconntect the short one between the bottem rad hose and the water pump neat the front right wheel but its a pig, so the bottem rad is the best option. (the water will be hot). Once drain replace the stat as scot said and the you need to flush the system. YOU MUST WAIT FOR THE BLOCK TO COOL DOWN BEFORE REFILLING THE SYSTEM Next close the system full the system with distilled water. make sure you get all airlocks out. Run engine to operating temperature to flush system. Now drain system again. Once cooled again Premix your new G12+ coolant/antifreeze to the correct ratio for your climate. I used 3 to 2 ratio as per instrutions and used nearly 3l of g12+. Now that the block is cool refill and seal the system, run engine, checking water level till it doesn't drop anymore. Replace Cap and leave running to force any air pockets through.
Supercharged 2 Posted April 27, 2003 Yes you should definetly warm it up first and open up to full heat if you want to drain the system fully, you may also want to think about using a flushing agent to get rid of any corrosion etc - do this if the current water is no longer blue (or pink) and especially if its going brown (ie rust) - also a good time to change the expansion tank for a new one as they tend to go off colour and make it harder to see the level. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 27, 2003 The best way to avoid air locks is refill through the top hose. Pour it in through the hose until you see coolant in the expansion tank, pop the hose back on, run engine until the coolant in the expansion tank rises (thermostat open), quickly screw the cap on and take it for a drive. Top up the following morning. A full flush is only really necessary if there are clear signs of sediment in the old coolant and expansion tank. Refill only with G12 plus as G11 has been found to cause corrosion. Kev
