VR6Pete 0 Posted February 1, 2015 Hi all. I've purchased a leather steering wheel restoration kit as my Corrado one is showing its age. Just wondering if anyone has done this before? Just after some tips etc.. And also what bits need masking off as I assume it's not all leather? Hard to distinguish what is / isn't leather as it all looks the same :) Cheers. seanl82 23 Posted February 1, 2015 Do the lot Pete. I did my entire interior, and the leather paint was suitable for vinyl too which the other parts will be. Even works on plastics which is spot on. When you apply the abrasive cleaner you should get some paint transfer onto the scotch pad if that's the kit you have. That's when you know you've got the clear coat off. You won't get any transfer if it's vinyl, and you'll be able to tell when scrubbing as the leather will absorb it and feel softer.
VR6Pete 0 Posted February 1, 2015 Do you have any pictures buddy? :)
seanl82 23 Posted February 1, 2015 Sure. Only thing is my interior is beige, but gives you an idea of what can be achieved. I used the furniture clinic kit. Before. (When I bought the car). http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?t=79984&p=960492&viewfull=1#post960492 After a bit of a clean! http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?t=79984&p=960728&viewfull=1#post960728 New leather sewn in on the bolsters. (Different colour so you'll see the change after restoration) http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?t=79984&p=990612&viewfull=1#post990612 Finished article, including some befores again. http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?t=79984&p=1026569&viewfull=1#post1026569

VR6Pete 0 Posted February 1, 2015 Looks awesome mate. Well spent a couple of hours this evening on my wheel. So here's a before And after Happy with the results, photos don't do it justice but it used to let the interiors down massively. VAG-hag 0 Posted February 2, 2015 Was this kit from furniture clinic?
Hairyarse 10 Posted February 2, 2015 Was this kit from furniture clinic? Ditto, let us know where it's from as need to do mine. Looks great ;)
sankysvr6 0 Posted February 2, 2015 Looks like a good job Pete, PM me your address and I will send mine over
seanl82 23 Posted February 2, 2015 Mine was yes. Some say to hire a compressor but I did it with the kit provided and it worked perfectly well, although I'd suggest getting 1 or 2 more air tins. I left about a third in each one to maintain a good pressure. I also went with satin rather than matt clear coat but it's your choice with the finish you want. Declan Sedrick Lehane 10 Posted February 2, 2015 Sean what colour specifically did you tell them? I also have the beige interior same as yours!
seanl82 23 Posted February 2, 2015 They colour matched mine. I sent them my headrest to match as it's not an area that gets sun bleached or worn much.
Declan Sedrick Lehane 10 Posted February 2, 2015 Sounds like a good idea! May need to do this then! My handbrake covers are damaged, I guess this would work on lets say a new black item to then make it all match?
seanl82 23 Posted February 2, 2015 It does but you need more coats. I wouldn't put it on high friction areas of plastic either as it will wear. My b pillars were hacked to death when I got the car so have black replacements. The paint has worn off just below the drivers side belt guide through friction. Declan Sedrick Lehane 10 Posted February 2, 2015 That makes sense! Can you (or anyone else!) recommend anything more tough so such items? Sorry for the thread Hijack!
seanl82 23 Posted February 2, 2015 It would work on your handbrake trim perfectly well. I refreshed mine and there's not a mark on it now. If your after some leather trimmed A,B&C pillars though that have already been done, I could oblige!?
Declan Sedrick Lehane 10 Posted February 3, 2015 Perfect! Cheers Sean, thank you, but half the fun is doing it yourself
Declan Sedrick Lehane 10 Posted February 25, 2015 Odd question, but would you be able to say change seat colour say from Black to Beige using this, or is that a bit much?
seanl82 23 Posted February 25, 2015 Yes you can. Takes a bit longer as a few more Base coats need to be applied, but easy to do. :thumbleft:
