Just spray the electrical contact cleaner you've got behind the steering wheel, before you go and start removing.

If you do take the steering wheel off just use any normal grease you have. You will only need a little amount, you could even use some Vaseline or a similar product you might have as lubricant.

Will do, Sanky! :thumb right:

Silicon grease has a low melting point. Good for anti corrosion and lubrication. Lithium has a high melting point and used for rotating parts that will get hot through friction. Silicon is white and as above, a little like vasaline. Lithium is dark in colour and a bitch to get off interior fabrics!

The multi purpose grease you've just bought will be fine for the steering wheel.

Thanks Sean! :)

its helpful to put a bit of tape on the steering wheel & then on the trim cover behind it, in line with each other, as its easy to get the steering wheel back exactly where it was

Cool!

I get that too, sometimes running a credit card around the small gap between wheel and column gets rid of it. I think its the horn contacts that make the noise.

Use credit card to remove that gold metal clip thing at bottom of steering wheel/column?

That making noise?

Removing that gold bit will stop your horn working. Just add a bit of grease to it.....I got chills, there multiplying

Not remove it Wayne, just use a credit card to push any dirt thats trapped out of it. The clip makes contact with a brass ring on the back of the steering wheel. Its why your horn works no matter what position the wheel is at.

Probably your driving Wayne. Not much torque below 4k rpm. Shift down to second and floor it, then you'll see it fade away in the rear view mirror!

Never build brakes without copper grease, normally a smear on the back of the pad and where it touches the carrier, I guess that the cause of the noise... The

Do i need to remove pads to add copper grease?

Or just remove wheel and add copper grease to back of pads?

Always worry shifting to 2nd (coming down a flooring it)!

What max speed can u drop down to 2nd and floor it?

I was thinking with a 2.9 L and healthy 190bhp (or whats left after 20years) -

Surely i dont need to drop to 2nd to beat a fiat 500???

Maybe if i was trying to beat a Scooby or something?

Must be my driving - always think others drive faster even in my car :(

the VR6 needs to be driven quite hard wayne if you want spirited driving

being in the right gear at the right speed with the right revs will come the more you drive it

Its lazy and needs to be worked to get the power out of it. Its a characteristic of the 12v engine that there is little torque under 3.5k rpm. You can reach over 70 mph in second mate, so I'm sure you'll have lots left if shifting down. It has 190 bhp, but its not particularly quick by modern standards. Probably not much more than any modern 2.0 turbo diesel. I know, as I could barely outrun a new BMW 320D a couple of months back!

Still not sure by use credit card?

In my pic i cant see any contact from steering wheel to column (except that gold clip)

Er ...do have a 2nd opinion about my horn (cough)(cough) working (cough)

So it must be inside that steering column - the scraping???

Ok! :)

I only floored it in 2nd/3rd near red line

Never drop down to more than 4th gear to over take yet!

it will be grit or dirt between the gold clip you can see making contact with the gold ring

take the steering wheel off & clean both & then put a little grease on both of said contacts & refit

i very much doubt it is your column m8

Lol

Looking at new Golf GTi doing sprints in 5sec

And Audi TTs in 4.9 - i guess we shouldnt compared with modern cars...

...but in 90s our Cs were fast compared with other similar cars! :thumb right:
