it will be grit or dirt between the gold clip you can see making contact with the gold ring

take the steering wheel off & clean both & then put a little grease on both of said contacts & refit

i very much doubt it is your column m8

Ok!

So grease on gold clip ok?

Its not some sort of electrical contact is it (if greased then no contact!)

Correct, and yes its an electrical clip. Grease will conduct perfectly well so long as you don't go massively overboard mate. A very light smear is all thats required.

Doing a bit of research on steering wheel removal...

Er

Does mine have an air bag?

No UK corrado models had airbags.

Late spec LHD models had airbags.

Airbags were introduced in 1997 on golf models in the UK

Wait for the car to be cool, you'll have no worry of the fans activating then. Turn the fans and if there is any notchy or heavy resistance, get them changed.

If you don't want to touch them, use a bit of wood!

Forgot about this - will check 2moro!

Pull off horn cover, taking care not to pull too hard as its connected with a spade connector. Disconnect spade, undo bolt, pull off wheel. Simples!

Silicon grease can be got from any motor factors or DIY store mate.

How tight do I tighten that bolt?

I ll give this a go tomorrow too!

At a guess you don't have a torque wrench if you are asking that Wayne, which kinda makes your question irrelevant. Pretty tight mate........ Better answer?

Guys

U think its this causing the scraping?

I did noticed from time to time quite a bit of debris falls onto the dash (not sure from where? Dodgy windscreen replacement? I mean all windows are shut etc - but ONLY happens when I drive fast!)...this TAB on back of steering wheel and this recess covered with debris on steering column...

Yes mate, have a look on the bottom of the fusebox cover to see which position it is. Ignition needs to be on for the horn to work btw.
