Johnboy98 0 Posted June 23, 2004 Any of you peeps give me some advice on this please whilst Ive got the gearbox out should I bother to change ?
Joe M 0 Posted June 23, 2004 It is a fantastic and worthwhile mod and id say definately worth doing while the box is out. Diff is about £620 and the fitting kit is about another £80, its also about 6 hours labour to get it changed and not an easy job. Ask phatvr6 about other things worthwhile doing when the box is apart like changing the final drive. I think he also uses a peloquin diff that is at least as good as a quaife and is cheaper, though has to be imported from the US so its worth asking about that as well. Johnboy98 0 Posted June 23, 2004 Thanks dude.
Henny 0 Posted June 23, 2004 I'd agree that this is a fantastic mod to do.... Final drive is easy to do while the box is in bits anyway so may be worth considering for the small extra it'll cost you... 8) If you've never done a gearbox before, it's definately not a DIY job... Gearboxes are the one part of the car I won't mess with (unless I know it doesn't ever have to go back in a car again! ;) ) as they are sooo easy to mess up... I got mine played with by Vince at stealth and am sooooo happy with the results... 8) Mine came in at around £1200 including a second hand box to take the VR ratios out of (cheers PhatVR6!), the Quaife LSD, all new seals and bearings and the labour... 8) Well worth the money it cost... :) 8)
Johnboy98 0 Posted June 23, 2004 Good info Henny ;)
16VG60 1 Posted June 24, 2004 LSD deffinately a must have gearbox option. Got one in mine to help with getting power onto the road and enjoyed the benifits ever since. Only downside is installation is not a DIY and it is advisable to get a specialist in this field to do the job. The work is not particularly difficult it just envolves the use of specialist tools to strip out the components. The gearbox has to be completely dismantled to fit the diff so best to get everything done at the same time. Not the cheapest of jobs but most certainly worth the investment. PhatVR6 0 Posted June 24, 2004 you need quite a lot of specialsit tools to do it. I downloaded the official manual for the 02a box, but decided that the parts were costing me so much money it was worth paying an expert to do it rather than having a got myself. quaife used to be £515+VAT from stealth. peloquin works out much cheaper at $700 as it includes the bearings, the speedo drive gear AND the ring gear bolts. http://www.thescirocco.com for best prices. they are worth every single penny though. I cannot stress enough how much this will transform the way your car performs. I've not gotten the fron end of my car out of shape once since it was installed, it desn't even feel like a FWD car anymore. get it to stealth, get a full rebuild at the same time, and consider a shrter final drive too. I've gone right for a 3.94, and I thnk it's absolutely perfect. for normal driving I can pull away in 2nd, go stright to 4th, then 6th, and it pulls like the stock car does. if I want to go ballistic I use them all and it's off like a scalded cat. the VR should have had a 3.94 and a torque biasing diff from the factory. if it did, it would have been the greatest fwd car of all time. Johnboy98 0 Posted June 24, 2004 LOL I haven't even finished my recent set of mods and Im already planning my next  thanks for all the input peeps how much money should I reckon on getting the job done by Stealth with Phat's gearbox suggestion and dont they do a 6 speed box with a LSD already fitted ? PhatVR6 0 Posted June 25, 2004 Quaife is £525+vat, rebuild about £400. so budget for just over a grand, and that's if you take the box along yourself, which I presume you are doing. final drive is £200 from vag. bolt kit is £70. or if you're loaded quaife can do it for you, with or without their 6 speed. Johnboy98 0 Posted June 25, 2004 Yeah Ive managed to drop the box out and do the chains but I really need the car so she's going back in for the time being. http://www.vwracing.co.uk/forsale.php Seems to be a fair few bargains to be had here ...however you'd need to be pretty switched on to make sure your not being sold something that is well past its sell by date ! PhatVR6 0 Posted June 25, 2004 sod the time. if you have the money get it done. you won't regret it one bit, they are worth every single penny.
Johnboy98 0 Posted June 25, 2004 Right well up for this mod im gonna order from scirroco.com and keep the 5 speed box what extras will it need as they seem to have the full kit ! Drives gonna need changing if so which ones ? he saiz he'll insert LSD for about 175 quid, will the gearbox need a rebuild and what does that consist of parts wise.....Soooooo many questions thing is im against the clock here as I need to get it all in hand before I go to Notts to do my DAS course the morrow. Cheers guys in advance of any info. ;)
PhatVR6 0 Posted June 25, 2004 you want a 3.6 or 3.94 final drive. if you're still on 15" wheels go for a 3.6 if you're on 17"s then a 3.94 is ideal if you do a lot of motorway driving then you'll need to get a longer 5th if you go for the 3.94 on small wheels. who's going to fit it for 175? does he know how to shin the diff bearings and what preload to set them at? rebuild constss of replacing every single seal and bearing, along with anything else that's worn out, usually 2nd gear syncro ring. Johnboy98 0 Posted June 25, 2004 Thanks Phat, these guys are gonna sort it http:// http://www.cdtransmissions.com/ Im still on original wheels and intend to stay that way. I sit at about 100 on the motorway, its got to be worth a full rebuild you reckon ? Lastly that Pel kit has got all i need apart from sevice items and are they VW only bits or common ? Thanks for now
Henny 0 Posted June 25, 2004 If you've got the box out, and in bits to fit the new Diff, you'd be a real prat not to get it rebuilt while you're in there... Just imagine just how f~@$ed off you'd be if you didn't do it now and then something else went wrong with the gearbox a couple of months down the road... :| I went the other way around... Took it for a rebuild and decided to get different 1st and 2nd and an LSD while it was in bits... ;) 8) (and it's all Phat's fault for talking me into it! ) Thanks Phat! :D
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted June 25, 2004 Yeah I'd be inclined to do the necessary when the box is off too. Trouble is, my box is soooooo darn good at the moment that I want to wait until it's fecked, i.e. getting the most out of it before rebuilding it, before lavishing it with a Quaiffe etc. I've decided I'll be going either 3.6 or 3.71. 3.94 will make it behave like an 020 16V box, which is fine if you like that sort of thing but I'm getting old and can't be arsed with swapping cogs too often! I won't be going 6 speed either. Too expensive and not really my thing. See laziness above
Johnboy98 0 Posted June 25, 2004 Thanks guys, so the perishable items like bearings and 2nd gear synchro's are they VW only or common ? Drives needed to order as extra are gonna be what then fellas ? I am a total gearbox/tranny  Noob !
Johnboy98 0 Posted June 26, 2004 Morning all ! Well my credit card has just taken another hammering  (evil bloody things) and Ive got my Peloquin LSD winging its way to me from the good old US of A. 420 snots all in....pretty damn cheap if this mod is as good as everyone saiz it to be (only kidding I know its the Mutts Nutts) Hopefully I wont get stung by fuggin customs again ( vsr controller 34 quid customs wanted an extra 19 for their trouble  ) Did you have to pay import duty Phat? if so what did the cheeky gits ask for?
