massbad69 10 Posted September 29, 2015 (edited) Thanks for the warm welcome to this site so I thought I better start my wee thread. The car is an original storm grey VR6 with 4 owners, 93k and fsh. It's a great condition car IMO and I aim to let it evolve into the best I can make it without spooling it. I have done 4 mk1 Golfs before this and they turned out pretty decent. I'm no mechanic unfortunately and I will be asking for a lot of advice along the way. The car has just had a Bistein B12 kit fitted with new top mounts, bump stops and Spring caps. It has the origin warning triangle and first aid kit. The wheels are recently refurbed with good tyres. I've removed the locking bolts and fitted new VW bolt covers. New wipers front and rear ordered. The bad points are - Rust blister under rear screen seal and possibly one on the side skirt behind drivers side front wheel. 5 or 6 wee car park dings and the usual chips and swirls. That will be the first thing to sort out. The other things are the heater direction does not turn and the passenger window only goes down half way. I have already ordered a new OEM gear knob also a new gearstick gaiter and handbrake leather cover. Clear indicators and diadem silver bulbs. So paint to sort, electrical glitches to be sorted and then nicer things. Wiper arms powder coated or painted. Calipers refurbed and painted red with new braided hoses, discs and pads. Poss new alarm and head unit with speakers. Edited August 15, 2016 by massbad69

massbad69 10 Posted September 29, 2015 Nice looking car and even better mk1 in the background. Welcome Thanks. The series 1 I've just sold and is heading up to Inverness on Sunday. It's a 1980 series 1 in concours condition with 32k on the clock. It won Best in Show at Volksfling this year and 2 other shows for me in 2015. I fancied moving away from mk1's and try another car from my younger days.
massbad69 10 Posted September 30, 2015 All the wee things matter so bought the rear wiper plastic cover for when I refurb the arm later.
massbad69 10 Posted October 2, 2015 Just all the wee things so far. That's the new wheel bolts and VW caps fitted, clear side indicators with diadem bulbs, all round wipers and leather handbrake cover fitted. Unsure of the leather handbrake cover but I will see when the gearstick gaiter is in.

subcool 0 Posted October 3, 2015 All the wee things matter so bought the rear wiper plastic cover for when I refurb the arm later. I have a new unused rear wiper arm going spare if needed😊
massbad69 10 Posted October 4, 2015 Thinking about doing the full brake system through the winter, not that they need done. Need to get the bodyshop estimate first though. I was thinking brembo discs and pads all round, red goodridge hoses and either send my 4 calipers away to bigred or buy new rears and paint them up myself ??
ChrisL 18 Posted October 4, 2015 Recommend Biggred, they did a great job with mine and came back better then new.
massbad69 10 Posted October 4, 2015 (edited) Recommend Biggred, they did a great job with mine and came back better then new. Thanks a lot. I've heard good things about them and think I will go down that route. Edited October 4, 2015 by massbad69
massbad69 10 Posted October 5, 2015 More wee things have arrived. Bonnet prop catch, new original gearknob with gearstick gaiter and pedal rubbers.
massbad69 10 Posted October 5, 2015 Quickly popped the new gearstick gaiter and new original gearknob on the car. The gearknob makes a massive difference and the new gaiter and handbrake cover are also decent.
Jim 2 Posted October 5, 2015 How much was the knob and gaiter mate?
massbad69 10 Posted October 5, 2015 The gearknob isn't cheap as I can only find it from the Greek lad on eBay so it's £60 but try VW as I got my last one from them for my Golf Mk1 Sport-line for £45. The gaiter is from Top Gaiters and incl the handbrake cover its £30 iirc http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/351001406362 There are a lot cheaper ones but I'm happy with there quality in my previous cars. Jim 2 Posted October 5, 2015 Perfect. Actually my gear knob is fine but my gaiter is a bit scabby so.. can see he does a gaiter for just £15 which seems to be a fair bargain! Cheers.
RFvr6 10 Posted October 6, 2015 looking good so far, I can see this being spotless when your finished with it, I seen your golf on 'the dub side', looked very tidy
massbad69 10 Posted October 6, 2015 looking good so far, I can see this being spotless when your finished with it, I seen your golf on 'the dub side', looked very tidy Thanks for that. I try to do my best with them all but I just wish I was more skilled but you are what you are. I just need a chance to get to the bodyshop to start the ball rolling with getting the paint looking decent.
massbad69 10 Posted October 6, 2015 I need advice on wheel and tyre size for looking out for wheels. Currently the car sits on speed lines with Bilstein B12 suspension. What are the perfect sizes for 16's and 17's for wheels with tyres with no rubbing and will have kids in the back quite a lot. Thanks for any help. massbad69 10 Posted October 7, 2015 More wee touches. New wiper arm caps and washer nozzles. I've bought lupo wiper arms for refurbishing and putting on. Tried a Fabia VRS 16" alloy on the car tonight to see if it looks much different to the standard 15", not to sure tbh.
massbad69 10 Posted October 7, 2015 At last I can get the car to the bodyshop this Saturday to get an idea on how much work is involved and cost. Also when it can get done as he's fully booked for 6 months for full respray but can do small jobs like mine at the same time
massbad69 10 Posted October 9, 2015 Heko wind deflectors arrived and Lupo wiper arms for me to refurb this weekend. Then pop them on with the new wipers and arm caps.
massbad69 10 Posted October 10, 2015 Productive day on the car. Estimate done and car hopefully going in for the paint repair on the tailgate blister and the dings in November. Had the car on the ramps and I will put new drop links on and another ball joint to match the new near side one. I refurbed the Lupo wiper arms and fitted them with new bolt covers and blades. New pedal rubbers and wind deflectors on and priced up the full brake rebuild as well. Cleaned down the underside of the bonnet, slam panel and wing tips and waxed them for protection. massbad69 10 Posted October 13, 2015 Got the short shifter and passenger window regulator coming from Dave and also a set of Bowden cables for the heater controls. Ordered rear caliper carriers and a wiper motor cover as it's missing. Once I'm back from my hols I'm going to order up everything for the rear axle rebuild but only if I have the guts to try it myself, which I'm not sure about. I'm no mechanic so need to see if I can tackle it ??
