My ice grey vr6 track/fast road build

Recommended Posts

Okay so iv actually got quite a way into this build but I thought I'd start a thread now while Iv still got a bit to do :) bassically iv got a ice grey vr it's done around 183,000 miles and was getting a bit tatty and worn out so I decided to take it off the road and rebuild it and it's kind of got out of hand now 😂 the engine has been completely stripped down and will be refurbished then built back up with high comp pistons shrick cams and some other goodies iv also done a complete obd2 swap and got a nice mint condition shrick manifold for it, also everything underneath the car has been removed and will be sand blasted seem welded and powder coated along with poly bush everything also eibach arb's and strut braces, iv got some audi calipers and 320mm brakes too to fit which will do for now but I'll be looking for some 4 pots or something in the future, the gearbox will also be refurbished and rebuilt with the lsd and high ratio final drive I bought fitted in it too, the paintwork is also being sorted although not a full respray but mainly just sorting out rust and the worst bits as it wasn't too bad anyway, as much of the sound proofing as I can take out has been removed but I'm keeping the carpets and the rest of the interior for now. I'm doing all the work myself (well as much as possible anyway) so any help or advice is greatly appreciated as iv not really done anything like this before and this is my first corrado let alone vr6 although I have done quite a bit of work on cars in the past so im not a newbie ;) im also fixing the countless broken or completely rusted things along the way which seems to getting more and more as I go 😂 the plans keep getting more and more track spec as I go but I do want it to be road legal by the end atleast for a while. Here's some picture of the build so far bdc9521cbd2ebf5672cd9eef1c3c9aca.jpgdbdee2c88075a28e2707d7aedb9123cb.jpga6f8e3c4afe1fe9b4adfb5153c88f11f.jpged08d2e78854d0f8f53366a645109d47.jpgc1ee21d8c3df4636abe30a50914a5524.jpg7ca1c7b88458f4d446315b459d78f242.jpgbad93ab77e5759482c0eb580574b11fb.jpg204d3e0b6e601657a26d8c5acf268d8e.jpg553c39f06dc39bdc3f74eb49a90f4faf.jpgd7a6c2c2a4412d87a0b6278233040921.jpg2ccc6306ed63ed06e1f41a8c257181da.jpgac2319a9fe6d8707ac6e4b9336179103.jpga0cbdab326c3a12f8fe0ec603cff48fc.jpg97f434cb2f2cff498db016a4d5ffafe8.jpg iv pretty much got everything I need to be sand blasted of and ready to go so that will be the next job then when that all back it'll go off to et the body work sorted

Been pretty busy the last couple days sourcing stuff for the build and removing stuff. I ended up ting the fuel tank off to get stainless straps but I got a bit carried away and ended up striping the fuel pump and cleaning it all too. 82bf48aa7103c7a407fe67fcbcd05497.jpg49f9cc0cb4ee845e7f8cf9dd3e94ec66.jpgbc513581abbcd6c267ca8330d7cb37eb.jpgb25789090413d5a765ff45fa872287bf.jpg0d6684618ef8fb53a6b8dfd67aac67dc.jpg264ed9c1dcd3f2374010a97411c442d3.jpg the gearbox iv stripped down was a damaged one I'd bought for the LSD and 3.9 final drive in it which iv cleaned up and got ready to put in once iv stripped down the other gearbox and had the casings aqua blasted. Lots more work left to do 😂 iv also been in talk with a guy about getting some ITB's. What's people's opinions on this?

So then another update after a while again. I need to make these a little bit more regular but it's hard to find the time between fixing all the problems with it and working 😂😅

Bassically the head, both gearbox casing and the engine block have come back from aqua blasting and they look absolutely amazing!! :D iv lacquered the aluminium casings and used engine enamel to paint the engine block which I think turned out pretty awsome too 😎04be032bad7c6dfd2a18d816155760c2.jpg7928f4e4b9962f1617888eb318a831c5.jpgd7ece53993380ea77c00693357e0a02c.jpg060d9332b6b74c32e63b6c76b281c0a7.jpg7efe0f1e269e7cc8b15bf9916c5d9515.jpg

Oh and also I made a bargain of a purchase on some brand new 268 shrick cams so they're all ready to be fitted b408319b4227e2a9ad86d126243d56a2.jpg

And then that's pretty much it for now with the engine until I get all the machine work done anyway. So I'm putting all my effort into the chassis and suspension for now which iv sandblasted pretty much everything and hammerited everything apart from a few bits and bobs which I'll get done in the next couple of weeks. Also ordered the poly bush kit and new wheel bearing and speed sensors and other bits and bobs so it can all be built and taken to the body shop for paint 😀

Hello again, it's been so long since iv updated on here 😅 so bassically iv got quite alot done although some parts of it were a nightmare and iv been a bit low on fund's but so far so good in terms of making slow and steady progress.

So as you can see from the pictures all of the suspension and running gear is now on with all new poly bushes through out as well as all new wheel bearings and drop links and just about everything I can get hold of also a new brake pressure load regulator because my old one was completely seized, the second hand genuine steering rack I bought has been fully refurbished and looped so now no power steering and the subframe has been seam welded too. Iv also ground off any rust I can find underneath and touched up the underseal pretty much everywhere and was very happily surprised to see that there wasn't actually that much rust for the age ad the fact it's a corrado. Only on 8 small patches iv had to cut out and weld a new bit in, the worst being underneath filler cap like at the top of the rear arch. But pretty much everything has been welded in apart from 3 patches which should be done in the next couple of weeks then as soon as that's finished it will be going to the body shop for paint while I build the gearbox and engine a55216196ad494e0ea493cb29ac9c36e.jpg1dfc4ca1e51e7b91ffb7730851bec78f.jpg77399dc2dc875b37d6244cdef8ca6250.jpg99b373e93f8840e586a4f10297bf18c4.jpg6aa099833add8b3324e33bf3c97f36e4.jpgf12d7338962c7230f3c388346e7f3a40.jpg5e71b78e8ebdbf1388362fbd45276aed.jpgd594fbb4879826aee1a45b0b726cbfb9.jpg675ba54d903c4fe32fc50845be22332d.jpg081e2962e05f6c016142a2e544d15abc.jpg

Block, head and gearbox look fantastic.

Out of interest while the head is off will you be doing any porting work on it? do VR6's respond well to flowed heads? we used to do our own heads years ago in my garage with a diegrinder on our MK1/2 Golf GTI's - made reasonable amount of difference... coupled with a 1900 block (mainly tourque) my car rolled 137bhp so a good 20bhp.

Thank you, yeah I'm really really happy with how they turned out I wasn't really expecting them to look that clean to be honest😂 and yesss my dad is an engine tuner and motorsport engineer so he'll do the porting, also because I'm doing a big valve conversion so it'll have to be done. iv heard that you get decent gains out of it because the head on the corrado's vr6 is supposed to be the most restrictive part.

Back again with another update on the build. It's been fairly slow progress really due to time and funds but some bits and bobs are getting sorted slowly. The actual car is now on it's wheels and all the welding underneath is sorted and undersealed the fuel tank is back on with new stainless tank straps and new bearing and bushes and everything that side of things is done!! it's even been outside of the unit for a wash and daylight! I'm just waiting for my friends body shop to get it I to do all the paintwork and engine bay :D so in the mean time Iv been sorting my gearbox because me being me Iv just been adding to the list of jobs. Iv now decided completely strip both shafts and have everything super finished and new synchros and all new bearings and seals to go with the pelequin lsd a d the 3.9 final drive which is now all done I'm just waiting on some bearings from vw and I'm looking for one bearing for the back end of the output shaft which I can't find anywhere so if anyone has any advice on that it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello again it's been a while but I have made decentish progress. The gearbox is now completly finished after a bit of nightmare but thanks to the corrado community and some advice from Vince at stealth it's done. If ended up swapping to the newer corrado 1st and 2nd gear and selector because there the only ones that the synchros are still available for so now every synchro and every bearing has been replaced and all preloads set by myself and all gears superfinished with the high ratio final drive, LSD and the 02J shift tower conversion and the end results looks better than I even hoped so I well happy there.

The body is now ready to go for the respray so that will happen in the next couple weeks. Alot of work had to be done on the rust around the windscreen which was a massive headache but now it's all done and all other rust on the car has now been sorted and primered including the engine bay which I havnt really smoothed at all if just cut the battery bracket off because that will go inside the car. I now also have the bonnet, boot, front and rear bumper and passenger side wing ready for paint and I'm just waiting on the driver side wing to arrive and then it's just the engine to build and then job done :)

Iv also bought a set of Azev A's along the way which was a bit of an impulse buy fdf9e242b768dbc59e74cd23f881e2e0.jpg2ba7a485815b83cf1b1a0f9a8e1bead2.jpg4d9aa2b417abc2982d84c6e4f6e8c1ba.jpg9f7e25bc3160c0a26674892635cc673c.jpg01822413bd0f98f6c2ab6ca44b26d8de.jpgf5fe977a798905fb6d6664cce90e7732.jpg6272c1289ec2b50379b33141b9d2d93d.jpg7d7a160a4c7f1abf6f1ab93a058194d7.jpg4b596d27d16f5163c100af2281a1017d.jpg

Here's some of the work done around the windscreen which was by far the rustiest part on the car56e8cbfbca9cd683b15380df1414d96a.jpgbd05039a449f7c6e33d6b18ba47ea37d.jpga12919dfcb091f736781e4931adece90.jpga968044322248f7d8c867e92b880ae38.jpg0b8cd4c413ddefb0c759949409e7abc1.jpgc38810253027507ae679213923284cc3.jpg6decda0d03187ede69aa52d008f5f787.jpgcaa5bc0c9ff2414ae1bbe3511342f86e.jpgfa951ec91a2515aacfea67f70dde2eb0.jpg
