VR6 Front wheel bearings discontinued

Just been to VW to order a front wheel bearing and they are now discontinued as well.

 

VW heritage sell a Meyle one = £24.50

 

Or from other suppliers: ECP and gsf so probably get up to £50% off these prices.

SNR = £51

Lucas = £33

 

GSF just do a standard or premium £30 or £64, can't tell what makes.

Ugh. Meyle stuff is generally regarded as being pretty good, but I know anything other than OE wheel bearings on the Corrado were always a lottery.

 

Maybe they'll move over to being a Classic Parts item at twice the price now? :)

Am sure the one that's gone isn't too old and was a non-genuine part. Might ring up gsf and see if they can tell me the makes as pretty sure i got an snr last time

SNR pretty much specialise in bearings so I'm surprised it's gone so soon tbh.

I can't remember if I've got the fronts for mine yet but I have for the rear and they're meyle iirc. Hopefully they last as they don't technically need doing but I've got new disks, even though the ones that are on have tens of thousands of miles left in them.

Yup heard that too.. I always use skf or snr.

SKF ones have lasted for me, 6 years now no sign of trouble. Fitted without a press, big bench vice(press of sorts I suppose), old bearing and a block of wood works.

Just ordered the SNR bearing, came out at £33 with a discount code.

 

Will try fitting it myself i think, am sure last time i asked the garage to replace this bearing they charged me £80 for the bearing and just tightened up the hub nut instead of fitting a new bearing. Hence the noise is back after a few thousand miles.

You can ruin a sealed type wheel bearing by undoing the CV nut and allowing the cars weight on its wheels.

 

If you've ever pressed one out you'll know it takes very little pressure to reduce the bearing to the sum of its parts

I think what happened was last time i took front end apart, i took the hub/bearing housing to the garage and they fitted new bearings, but when i renewed the cv joints/hub flange i had problems with the spline fittings. Garage advised me to hammer the new cv joint into the hub/bearing, so i started to do that but as i hammered it started to push the hub out (separating the bearing slightly) so the garage just pressed it back together. Been causing problems ever since.
