jamy99 0 Posted July 22, 2004 My 1.8 16v is nearing 140,000 miles and it smokes above 5000 revs. I know these engines are renowned for burning oil as they get old. Will replacing the oil seals usually cure this and should it be an easy job for my local reliable garage. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Cheers
Henny 0 Posted July 23, 2004 at 140K, Personally I'd take the head off and get it rebuilt (guides and seals as well as a skim to make sure it's true...) and while it's off, drop the sump and renew the bottom end bearings and oil pump... total cost well under £450 if you do it all yourself with reasonable machining costs and you'll end up with what is basically a new engine.... 8) I did this on my 1.8 16V when I had her and NEVER regretted it in the least..... 8)
