I know what you about the stock knob in the mk3 gti - it could easily be at home in a T4 van. Shame VW didn't stick a golf ball one on there to keep the heritage alive. Both cars now have their heart removed, the Golf need its engine bay cleaned up, then the engine install shall commence!
