how to..... change the coolant?

Recommended Posts

anyone got a good how to guide or can write some pretty easy to follow instructions i would really appreciate it!

is it easy to bleed the system once its all changed? do you even need to?

my running oil temp is running hotter now than it has been before and someone said it could be an air lock or broken thermometer.

would VAG COM pick up the broken thermometer??

ta

if someone can tell me what to do i'll galdly take pics of it as i go along then we can add it to the HOW TO section.

My precsence is required

Changing the coolant is easy, I'll try a 'from memory' list, here goes:-

1. Drain coolant by removing expansion cap, detaching rad bottom hose and unscrewing the block drain screw (in the long plastic transfer pipe that goes from water pump to thermostat housing). Let it all flow out!

2. Screw the block drain screw back in and pop the rad bottom hose back on and remove the rad's top hose.

3. Pour in 2 bottles of G12+ coolant through the rad top hose and then plain water. Keep pouring the water in until you hear gurgling noises in the expansion tank, shortly after that you should see fluid at the bottom of the expansion tank. When that happens, pop the rad top hose back on. All of the air has now been forced out of the coolant galleries.

4. Run engine with expansion cap off and keep it running until the expansion tank level rises (as the thermostat opens). As the water rises, quickly put the expansion cap back on and take it for a 20 minute drive.

5. Top up in the morning.

Replacing the thermostat involves removing the stat housing (you may aswell replace that as they crack) which is in-front of the coilpack, and that will have to come off too. Get the a stat, housing and transfer pipe to stat housing seal and a housing to block seal from VW before proceeding.

Cheers

K
