bazgreener 0 Posted May 10, 2003 Has anyone fitted an external oil cooler to their G60? If so what do you do with the two coolant pipes that would run into the old oil cooler? Also does anyone know what psi the oil pressure is on the G60? thankee Baz
LowG 0 Posted May 10, 2003 i dont know but im planning to buy a new oil cooler, How mcuh did you pay for yours? rgds migs
G60Jet 1 Posted May 10, 2003 I guess you leave the VW cooler in place cos you put another cooling ring in between the filer and the VW OEM one as far as i know. If not then you just join them together for a guess
G60 0 Posted May 10, 2003 hey barrie..you have a stock oil cooler on your G60?? i always wondered about that, and ive heard euro cars came with em.. we didn't get them in north america as far as i know. my car doesn't have one. i have a cooler from an audi 5000 (i think..got it a while ago and didn't see what car it came from) aw fuck it i'll take a pic.. is there any problem with dropping oil pressure when fitting a small oil cooler like this with a sandwich adapter at the oil filter? G60Jet 1 Posted May 10, 2003 Someone look that part number up on the EPC 034 117 021 that will tell you what model there were fitted to.
G60 0 Posted May 10, 2003 i have ekta actually... but i can't get it to tell me what car it comes from when i enter the part #.. so i took a guess at what i remember it coming out of, and sure enough.. oil cooler in a 1988 Audi 5000T matches the part number. :) so anyway.. there's no problem in oil pressure drop is there? i wouldn't imagine there would be.. car might take a bit more oil. am i wrong? G60Jet 1 Posted May 10, 2003 okay here is a copy of an old email i got off gyln Williams over a year ago Nigel, Good idea if you are in a hotter climate. The best location for the oil cooler is just to the left of the radiator as you look from the front (however you probably have a bigger radiator than the standard G60, as I understand you have aircon) just below and in front of the G-lader. The best way to get access to this space is to remove the bumper - undo the 4 retaining bolts & slide forward, remembering to unplug the foglight & indicator loom. You need to have a thermostatic feed from the oil filter head to prevent over cooling - they usually open at about 70'C or so. Remove the old water fed oil-cooler and replace the coolant pipe with one from a Mk 2 Golf without this type of oil-cooler. You then have clearance problems with the exit box from the G-lader for the oil feed pipes from the thermostatic head - you will probably have to replace this with something like the Bahn Brenner exit pipe to give you more room. The best oil coolers are probably Mocal ones which come in a variety of shapes & sizes - try & use the biggest one you can fit - the are fairly widely available from most of the tuners/specialists - maybe talk to Jabbasport etc as I am sure they have fitted them before. I fitted my own, although it is a bit involved it certainly makes a difference to the oil temps. Hope this helps Glyn
bazgreener 0 Posted May 11, 2003 I got a cooler similar to the one in the pics at the breakers, sandwich plate c/w stat and pipe work cost me £50, cheaper than £120 for a kit! The reason I asked about oil pressure is that I will have to use hose clips on the oil cooler pipes and have been told these won`t take more than 100psi. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 12, 2003 If the cooler pipe unions have one way barbs, don't use hose clips as they'll cut through the rubber. As mentioned before, wrap some PTFE tape around the cooler threads to avoid leaks and don't over tighten the unions. Kev
bazgreener 0 Posted May 12, 2003 The ends on the cooler have normal swaged ends so should be fine with clips, it was just the pressure I was worried about. Somebody must have an oil pressure gauge on thier G60 surely. :?
W3RKD 0 Posted May 12, 2003 mine runs around 4 bar when pulling hard... if thats any held to you
GazzaG60 0 Posted May 12, 2003 pressure is around 60-80psi on startup(cold) will drop to around 15 on tickover and rise to around 60 when foot down. seems to rise fairly proportionate to revs i got a cooler off a mk1. not sure if itll fit yet. needs the thermostat changing for a 80 one too as the std on that is 100 i think. would deffo fit with rsr. not with resonator box though i dot think
bazgreener 0 Posted May 12, 2003 Thanks guys, a mate has just told me he has a sandwich plate froma mk1 so i`ll try and see if that fits, I think the problem with the silencer box depends on which direction you run the hoses.
bazgreener 0 Posted May 15, 2003 Update on the G60 oil cooler;- The oil rad that i have came from a renault 25 automatic and fits perfectly in the gap to the left of the water rad (looking from the front of the car) even using it`s existing rubber mount! looking through the gap where it will fit at the oil cooler, i can see no problems with fitting a sandwich plate and hose lengths should be no more than 600mm each. The problem with the coolant hoses to the old oil cooler can be overcome by fitting golf gti 8v (later PB engine) hoses which don`t have the oil cooler take off pipes, you need the one from the w/pump to the front of the head and water pump to metal pipe that runs up to the heater matrix. I will post up some pics in a few days when it`s all in place.
G60 0 Posted May 15, 2003 any word on a cheap sandwich adapter thatll work? how did the mk1 work out?
bazgreener 0 Posted May 15, 2003 No luck with the mk1 cooler as it replaces the whole oil filter housing and sticks out too far, i have found a normal sandwich plate with oil stat for £39 so just some hose on top of that and we`re sorted. :)
G60 0 Posted May 15, 2003 oil stat? where did you find the plate?
bazgreener 0 Posted May 15, 2003 A take off plate like this has a stat built in, I will be removing the old heat exchanger/oil cooler though.
G60 0 Posted May 29, 2003 that plate you used, do you have a source/part number? i'm still trying to find a plate with a stat that'll fit my car, the one in the pic looks perfect.. thanks
bazgreener 0 Posted May 29, 2003 More info on the take off plate here. The one i have is made by mocal but it dosn`t have any part number on it, i think they are fairly standard.
G60 0 Posted May 29, 2003 so it looks like its standard for all vws except bug. i'll give british american transfer (BAT) a call... they import mocal to north america. thanks.
