Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 15, 2003 Has anyone here got a VR6 that actually idles smoothly? Mine is lumpy as hell and starting to get on my nerves! I've sprayed carb cleaner round all the induction parts (with the engine running), cleaned out the ISV, de-emulsified the throttle valve etc and it just won't idle smoothly. There aren't any induction leaks as the carb cleaner trick would have picked them out like a sore thumb. Also, when holding the revs at 1500rpm, there is a horrible shuddering through the car. It might be the VT front mount but it's only started doing it recently. And lastly, there is an odd chaffing noise coming from the bellhousing. I thought it was a dry fan belt at first as there is also a hot rubber smell accompanying it. It's not the belt as I sprayed some silicon maintanence spray on the belt and the noise is still there. It's not the tension pulley either as I checked that. I put a stethoscope on the bell housing and it's not the chains either!! Bloody Corrados, I hate them sometimes. Any ideas? pimp 0 Posted May 16, 2003 my idle was very jumpy, whether hot or cold. I had most of the same things done as you did. Found out it was a sensor that reads the cam position, had a dodgy wire connection, had it replaced and I've had no probs since. about a year ago roughly. :thumbleft: :thumb right: Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Not on the VR6, but have had similar sounding rough running on my 16V which turned out to be a duff plug - fouled up at low revs but cleared when it was booted; showed up by pulling the leads. Rams 0 Posted May 20, 2003 Hi mate Normally when you have idle proplems on C's its the air stabilization valve, it has a habbit of going wrong! Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 20, 2003 Ramsay, yeah she fires up OK, I wouldn't say straight away but after say 2 or 3 cranks. The car runs fine when cold, but feels reluctant, sluggish and coarse when hot. It's also been cutting out at junctions a lot recently too. The trouble with those damn valves is they are hard to diagnose and they're completely different to 16V & G60 valves. They are the same valve used on BMW 325is. My old beema used to be the same but changing the valve did nothing, so I'm not confident doing the same on the VR will help either and when the valve is around a £100, its not something you want to try out of trial and error! I'm thinking perhaps MAF or coil pack problems as the O2 sensor is working as it should! I'll get there, eventually! Cheers Kev 94 VR6 Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

GazzaG60 0 Posted May 27, 2003 Not sure if this is relevent or not but on Escort zetec engines they have more problems than us with idle. other tha vacum leaks, isv type issues n that they also have airflow sensor problems. What happens is like yours on VRs they get hot to burn all the crud off. problem is that whats in the air now is different to what it used to be n so the temp that it gets to isn't hot enough or cant burn the crud off. what you do is get some intake cleaner n sprey it on the wires in the tube. be v careful if a wire breaks its dead. get a paintbrush n trim it so that only a few bristles are left. carefully wipe the wires. my mates escort GTI used to hunt real bad. tis a lot better after cleaning this. think the way it works is by keeping it at a constant temp. air cools it and the difference to take it back to temp is fed to ecu if it is shielded with poo the its like having a jacket on.
