Mike Edwards 0 Posted September 10, 2004 Look huge, but still fit under 16" rims.... :D Bit of rust due to rain showers  I can now get the ABS to kick in on dry tarmac without having to stamp on the brakes - just by increasing the pedal pressure

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 10, 2004 Are the calipers any wider than the 280 ones? How does the extra unsprung weight affect the handling? If at all? Been considering the same setup myself.... and also the 256 vented rear setup. But there's no hurry now that my car actually has brakes after 18 months of having no braking from the rear :? Joe M 0 Posted September 10, 2004 I think they use the same calipers as the 288's. If so this would be good as you could swap back to speedlines just by changing the carriers and disks. 8)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 10, 2004 That's good then as I just need to 'clearance' the carriers by 2mm to get them under my wheels
Joe M 0 Posted September 10, 2004 I think the disks are a different offset and spacers are used so clearance might be ok then. :?
Mike Edwards 0 Posted September 11, 2004 Now with a picture. Wheels are 16" Audi A3 Turbo items. A good inch of clearance to the inner face of the wheel - which is good when you consider that the original calipers needed 3mm spacers to allow the wheels to turn... OSV 0 Posted September 11, 2004 Tell us more about the converion process and the parts used, sounds good. 8)
Mike Edwards 0 Posted September 11, 2004 Calipers/carriers, disks, pads and hoses from any 312mm equipped Golf Mk4/Seat Leon/Audi TT (A3/S3 might also work, but need to check). You'll need spacers (high-tensile steel) of between 5-7mm to fit between the front uprights and the caliper carriers. If you go for 7mm (as sold by AMD if you ask nicely) you might also want to source some longer bolts as there's only ~10mm of thread left (theoretically enough with a safety margin, but more is better). 288mm are much less hassle - they bolt straight on. PhatVR6 0 Posted September 11, 2004 I have 2 calipers and the 312mm carriers for sale. you'll need new discs £120.
Joe M 0 Posted September 11, 2004 Anyone know if im right in thinking the calipers are the same as the 288's? Or is that me talking mince. im sure I read that somewhere before.
Mike Edwards 0 Posted September 11, 2004 Calipers are the same - it's the carriers that are different.
CoxyLaad 0 Posted September 12, 2004 eh? I have 312mm setup on mine and I have 1 washer thickness spacing them out so they are centered on the disc?
Mike Edwards 0 Posted September 12, 2004 Interesting - are the ftont uprights on your car from a VR6 or one of the 4-cylinder models? How thick a washer are we talking about as well?
CoxyLaad 0 Posted September 12, 2004 my front end is full VR6 plus axle, I see yours is five stud too. and I am talking about a bog standard washer thickness - whats that? 1- 2 mm?
Joe M 0 Posted September 12, 2004 What car are your disks from? Maybe theres different offsets on them depending on model.
CoxyLaad 0 Posted September 12, 2004 my discs and claiper carriers are from a v6 4motion golf
Mike Edwards 0 Posted September 12, 2004 Ahhh... Seem to be several types of caliper-carrier listed.
CoxyLaad 0 Posted September 13, 2004 thats interesting to know!
PhatVR6 0 Posted September 13, 2004 The calipers i'm selling are off a SEAT LEON. identical to late golf vr6 288's
Mike Edwards 0 Posted September 13, 2004 The calipers are interchangeable bteween 288mm and 312mm - it's the carriers that differ. Not sure what that means in terms of offset though...
MoonlightVR 0 Posted September 19, 2004 Mike, did you use the brake hose off the 312 set up or the original VR6 item?
Mike Edwards 0 Posted September 19, 2004 You need the hose from the new brakes as well as it uses a Banjo fitting at the caliper end rather than the screw-in of the original caliper.
MoonlightVR 0 Posted September 19, 2004 You need the hose from the new brakes as well as it uses a Banjo fitting at the caliper end rather than the screw-in of the original caliper. Presumably the other end of the hose is a standard fit? And the hose isn't too long for the Corrado?
