Andy T 0 Posted September 30, 2004 This started about a month ago, when parking or 3-point turning, I feel & hear a loud knock/bang in the suspension/steering. It only happens on when turning the wheel right, between half & full lock. It usually occurs first thing in the morning when turning right into my road, then it is fine when driving, then happens again when parking. kinda feels like something sticking then releasing, or alot of play being taken up! when I bought the car 12 months ago all my suspension/steering was checked over by a very competent vw specialist, they found no problems or wear at all at 82k (ive done 10k since then) Any idea's what it could be? the car handles fine, just as it was before this started happening. dazzyvr6 0 Posted September 30, 2004 could be a number of things,cv joint, coil spring turning on the strut, top mount, bottom ball joint..best get it up in the air and get a mate to turn the steering while you listen, although it may only make a noise when the wheels are on the ground with the weight of the car on them :? RadoAds 0 Posted September 30, 2004 Sounds like the coil spring mate to me, if its a very loud knock then its unlikely to be cv joint, or ball joints, it could be that the coil needs to be seated properly or more likely the very tip of one of the ends has sheared for whatever reason and is not seated upto the raised section on the cup that the spring sits in, hopefully not many pennies to put right for you :D
Andy T 0 Posted September 30, 2004 Good idea, i will check the coil spring. my lowering springs are only a 40mm drop but they are not under much compression when the car is jacked up, maybe its dislocated like you say I hope so ! cheers
RadoAds 0 Posted October 1, 2004 Could well be Mate, let us know what it was when you get it sorted
yellowslc 0 Posted October 1, 2004 also check your subframe bolts. Especially the ones which hold the rear pivot bushings of the control arms. R
Andy T 0 Posted October 28, 2004 Well, jacked up the front of the car last weekend and checked the springs - all looks ok, made sure they were seating perfectly, but the knock stll occurs :( it seems to be getting louder, but less frequent? Will check the subframe bolts next. I think this started happening when I took of my 16" alloys with 195 tyres and put on some slightly wider 15's with crappy 205 tyres - the steering is noticably heavier with these on, could it be related to this? dr_mat 0 Posted October 28, 2004 Disconnect the track rod ends (if you have the time/technology!) and try turning the steering wheel against no weight..
