If the frequency of the noise speeds up and slows down as you do and doesn't happen more when hitting bump then it could be a wheel bearing, (had that problem recently).

Just after peoples opinion on the VR6's brakes... From reading other posts on here I've always known the brakes aren't great but I'm mine really are p*ss poor. Hadn't driven another car for a month or so and used my parents ST170 this morning. First junction and nearly put myself through the windscreen!! It's not just the sensitivity I'm concerned about but the overall stopping power. Anyway, I took was a bit concerned by this so took my GFs 54reg Punto 1.2 out for a spin and can honestly say my VR's brakes were no better than this - if anything I'd say the Puntos were slightly better. Is this just something us C owners have to put up with, this side of opting for something like a Brembo conversion, or does something sound a bit iffy with my motor..? I've done the following to the brakes in the past year in an attempt to improve them:- - Re-washer rear callipers - Fit Goodridge stainless hoses - Fit 4 new Pagid FR pads - Bleed entire system and fill with Dot5.1 following Bentley's procedure (Later re-bled at VW specialist due to concerns with braking performance but with no improvement). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I was thinking maybe not a magnesium alloy as I would've thought they'd be on more expensive cars - didn't realise they're illegal in this country though.
-
Does anyone know what alloy the standard Speedlines are made from....is it magnesium or aluminum or something else..?
-
Magnecors are very good quality, I've had them on and off my engine loads of times with no probs. The 7mm leads will fit if you chizel off the plastic retainers in the channels, whereas with the 8.5mm leads you have to widen the entire channel which takes some time, (I used a appropriate sized dowl wrapped in glasspaper). Can't imagine there's much difference between the Bosch and NGK spark plugs. I've got Bosch platinum in mine although I know some people prefer NGK. Better off not buying platinum plugs and just changing them more often IMO.

I changed my BBT leads, (which were very poor quality), for some Magnecors and very happy. Think they were about £90 for six of the 8.5mm leads, which just fit in the VR6 guides...

I'm about to fit a new crankshaft oil seal this afternoon, (flywheel end). I'm just curious as to the best way to lubricate it before fitting. Is standard engine oil ok, or would it be better to use something like graphite grease? Thanks for your help
-
Thanks, sorry yeah I meant indicator..... Thanks
-
Can anyone with ETKA help - I need to know if this is the part no. for early or late style foglights. 535 953 141 Thanks

Thanks guys - ran it for about 15mins and the noise suddenly dissapeared. Was just feeling pretty chuffed with a job well done when I noticed a trickle of oil from the bell housing cover. Turned out the crankshaft seal was leaking so of with the gearbox again. Nightmare! Didn't bother changing it as the previous owner had it done with the clutch 18months ago but seriously regretting it now! I did oil it with normal engine oil before fitting the lower chain cover, but is there a better lubricant to use as don't want anymore problems. VW suggest AMV...etc but £40's a bit steep... Also, should I replace the flywheel bolts again, even though they've only been in five mins? Thanks again

Thanks Kev got it sorted, but almost wish I hadn't! One of the wires going to the coilpack had become trapped between the timing chain cover and the coilpack and was earthing. Problem I've got now is a terrible engine noise which I'm assuming is tappets. I changed them because of this but the noise is now much worse. Is it possible I've fitted the wrong ones as the guy in GSF wasn't 100% sure. The VAG reference is 034 109 309AD - and the description on the receipt is W/C 1.05-2.8 > 95 Approx...
-
Sounds very possible. Any way to check that - other than fitting a new coilpack..?
-
Read the above through again and don't think I was that clear. Basically I'm not getting a spark on numbers 3+4 but the lead and plugs are OK.
-
Just got my VR6 back together after doing the chains, clutch and tappets. Turned the key expecting the usual 6 cylinder growl but instead it was more like a tractor. After some investigation I've found out 3 + 4 aren't firing and I've checked the plugs and leads but they're both fine. I know it could be a number of things but was wondering if anyone one here has had similar probs or any ideas. The coilpack was working fine before so can't see why it would've suddenly failed... I know I've probably bugg**ed the CAT already but trying to run it as little as possible investigating. Any advice much appreciated - Thanks.

Another quick question - I ordered the following parts for my timing chain replacement job as listed on another thread. Can anyone confirm that the guide sleeve already comes pre-fitted with the other two parts, i.e. no need for the other two. Thanks
-
Yeah it looks pretty much in the same condition as mine. The guide rail was also cracked in exactly the same place - I'm replacing at the moment. Bit of a gamble but I'd guess it'll last another couple of thousand.

Right, got everything off but had a nightmare with the head gasket - The top tensioner sprung back and went through it. As I've got the head off I'm thinking about getting into that as well. Any comments about the state of the valves/pistons? (pics above) I thought 1 and 6 valves look quite carboned up....

Ordered the parts from VW this afternooon but will be getting the clutch and two chains from GSF for obvious reasons:- Lower chain VW - £35.56 GSF - £15.60 Upper chain VW - £71.65 GSF - £24.20 Clutch Kit VW - £129.95 GSF - £86.00
-
That'd be great if you get the time dinkus, even just the transmission removal/refitting would be a massive help. Thanks, be great to pick your brains if I get stuck! Any idea about the clutch anyone - did they change the design between '93-'94...?

I'm gearing up to replace the timing chains on my VR6 this weekend and just about to order the parts so have a couple of final questions... I know this topic has been discussed to death on the forum and believe me I've read all threads plus the guide on the Vortex forum but just want to check a couple of things. The parts I'm ordering are as follows:- 021 109 465B - Lower timing chain 021 109 467 - Lower timing chain tensioner N905 350 01 - BOLTS x 2 021 109 469 - Lower timing chain guide rail 021 109 471 - Lower pin 021 109 503A - Upper chain 021 109 511 - Upper pin 021 109 507B - bolt 021 109 509E - tensioner 021 109 515A - mid-pin 021 109 513 - upper guide rail N010 272 4 - hex bolt N010 352 10 - hex bolt N900 411 02 - o-ring for upper cover N905 398 01 - flywheel bolts x 10 021 198 141AX - Clutch Kit N101 010 01 - 12 point bolts x6 02A 141 180A - guide sleeve 085 311 113 - oil seal N903 543 01 - round seal (Or possibly installation kit 02A 198 101) N903 554 04 - spline bolts x 3 02J 141 719B - clutch release arm 012 141 741 - spring 02A 141 777 - ball pin G000 100 - grease AMV 188 001 02 - sealant Is there anything else that anyone would recommend changing or parts I have missed? I'm going with the MK4 parts where possible as advised and will get the flywheel resurfaced rather than buy a new one. The second problem I've got is the clutch kit. Just phoned VW and they claim there isn't a clutch kit for my year ('93) and the parts have to be bought separately - £172.92+vat for plate, disc and release bearing. Is this right because I'll be going with an inferior GSF kit if the stealers are charging this much! Not sure if Galaxy's use the same clutch but Ford want £91.80 for the plate and disc - then could get the release bearing from GSF. Any help appreciated - thanks!

Yeah not too bad. Don't actually have VAG.COM but a garage I've been to a couple of times did it for £20 and will clear and check again afterwards. Didn't note down the fault code stupidly....The car does have a coil pack though. Maybe it wasn't code 00515 though as pretty sure the revs weren't limited to 6k  Will change the lambda probe and clean out the 'throttle body' (basically just a metal cylindrical thing towards the back of the engine bay), as the guy who did the test advised, and go from there. Hopefully it'll sort it - if not i'll get the exact codes the remain! Thanks for the help so far.
-
Yeah, read that somewhere in another thread... Can't really remember but I think it might've been off so i'll forget about them for till i plug it in again after sorting the other probs.
-
Just plugged my VR6 and got the following fault codes up:- 1- Oxygen Sensor no signal 2- Engine speed sensor 3- Idle air control regulation ad. range below min level 4- Hall sensor no signal 5- Mixture adj. Oxygen and engine speed sensor I think I can replace after reading some old threads. The hall sensor from what I understand is in the dist. and feeds the speedo... Does it have any other uses? Also does anyone know common causes of the 3rd and 5th faults. Have no idea how to tackle these but want to get them sorted...?

I use 10/40 oil (the silver quantum or magnetec) and the car's got 98k on the clock. Not exactly sure about oil comsumption as it seems a bit random but i'd estimate 1/2 a litre between fill ups. Just did a compression test with the following results:- Cyl 1 - 159PSI Cyl 2 - 167PSI Cyl 3 - 167PSI Cyl 4 - 180PSI Cyl 5 - 181PSI Cyl 6 - 171PSI Also plugs look pretty oily (see pic). They've been in less than a year - the NGK on six is due the the Bosch one packing up about 6 months ago. Not sure if this sheds any more light on the situation. Happy to do a recon job on the head and was going to do the chain soon anyway but not keen on a full overhaul. Might be cheaper to look out for a engine with a few less miles then flog mine on the cheap...? Thanks again for the help.
