Hi guys, Wonder if you can help. Picked up my car recently from a (reputable) garage following some work to get it through the MOT and, surprise surprise, I have a new problem. Drove the car this morning, quite a long journey, about an hour and a half and once I'd come off the A3 and was sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic I hear what sounded like a hedge trimmer/chainsaw/I don't know. Turns out its my fan going in to overdrive. And just now I popped out to the shop, in the car just 15 minutes this time, car running whilst waiting outside shop and the same thing happens, really loud fan and a slightly dodgy smell to be honest. Water temp reads high at 110 and oil temp reads high at 120! Does this point to any obvious problems? Thermostat/temperature switch or something similar? Thanks in advance.

VRs stronger than the 16vs for longevity?

Hi all, Was just intrigued as to what mileage you guys have. I have 95K on my '95 16v which I can only presume is not that bad for a 21 year old car? Also, how long do you think these 2.0 16v engines can go for if maintained correctly? Are there any really early ones still out there on the road too? The early nose versions, 1.8 16v and G60? Just curious...

Ok, thanks. I've actually just found the receipt for the 'Clifford Concept 300' alarm, fitted in 2001 with the old alarm system removed at the same time. Is this separate to the immobilsor? Not sure if imobilisor if factory fitted or was fitted new with the Clifford system? Just spoke to the company that fitted the Clifford alarm system. They reckon the system itself is pretty reliable and that my particular system doesn't have a transceiver ring. Reckon he tended to a mk3 Golf with similar symptoms before and the ignition barrel itself was at fault. Think I'm gonna be on this one for a while...

I suspected this too. But how can I diagnose it? TBH I wouldn't mind just taking the ancient thing out completely. Is that a wise thing do and have others done this? I guess there are obvious security implications as well as insurance issues to consider here...

Thanks for the advice, will report back.

Hi guys, I've got a stalling issue with my 1995 2.0 16v; I'd say around 2-3 times out of 10 when starting the car, it will start and then immediately cut out. When this happens a second try will normally fire it up as usual but sometimes will take three times to start properly. I have a new battery, new spark plugs and I've checked the connections of the black transponder box for the immobillisor which seem to be fine (although I still have my suspicions that the immobilisor is still somehow the culprit). The occasions when this stalling seems to happen I think more often than not are when the car has already been driven that day (although I'm sure it has happened in the past on first start up of the day). Anyway, really struggling to find out what is causing this. The car has no problem starting up most days and on this cold morning (for instance) it fired up immediately as if it were brand new. Regarding the causes, could it be a faulty temperature sensor/switch? (I'm not getting great mpg, difficult to get late 20s on motorway, oil temperature often reads between 110-118 mark), fuel pump relay? (but I do hear the pump every time I turn the key), another issue with the Clifford immobilisor? (if I havn't started the car after 30 seconds the immobilisor will activate, in that situation and upon disabling the immobilisor the car will then often take a few seconds of turning before starting roughly). Apologies for this badly written query and if I've babbled on —*just tried to convey as much info as possible, any help or advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that this has nothing to do with your stolen Corrado and I only mention this as, in the 3 months of owning mine, I saw another one for the first time today and it vaguely matches the decription of yours. It was coming on to the A3, southbound, probably from M25. A dark blue J reg Corrado with red badges.

WANTED! Drivers side door mouldings (rear 1/4, door & front 1/4)
FrankyEight replied to FrankyEight's topic in Exterior
Thanks for replying, I have the rear 1/4 piece now so its just the door piece and front 1/4 I need. Could you give me a quote for these? -
Do VW have an embargo on talking about the Corrado
FrankyEight replied to Chuggs1's topic in General Car Chat
I imagine that they only speak about Sciroccos and Golfs for marketing reasons, to help boost sales of their new versions. They can't sell any more Corrados... If the Corrado was named the Scirocco MK3 I imagine they'd be singing about it! -
I found what I think is the immobiliser control module in the dash (black box beside the spoiler switch control). It had two 'connectors' plugged in underneath it, I disconnected these (they looked fine, not corroded or anything) and soaked them, as well as the 'ports' they go in, in WD40 and reconnected. Doesn't seem to have made a difference! This is a very intermittent problem as most of the time the car starts fine, and never cuts out while driving anyway. Just the odd occasion, often when I lock and then unlock the car from inside before starting, when it starts and then after a second cuts out. At the weekend I drove it 60 miles down to Portsmouth with no problems, left in in the car park for 3 hours and on returning it took 4 times for the car to start properly, the first 3 times its starts and then cuts out. A little scary! What else could it be? Some sort of temperature sensor maybe? ECU something or rather? I'm not knowledgable in this area and am starting to lose hope... Would it be more sensible to give it to my local garage and hope that they can fix it?

Anyone know where I can find the control module? Much appreciated.

Great! Don't suppose you know where I might find the control module? Thanks.

Cheers for clearing that up. Considering changing to 205mm as 195mm looks a little skinny!? My 'old' 1.8T had 205mm tyres, but then again it had 'tractor style' 55mm profiles too... I guess I need to see the price differences too.
-
Does the VR6 have a wider track than a late 16v? I thought the styling changes required for the VR6 lump were carried across the range?
-
Sorry, should have been a little clearer. Not concerned about the extra expense, but they'll fit fine won't they? Am I right in thinking that the 16v came on 195mm and VR6 on 205mm?
-
... if, when it comes to replacing my tyres, I put 205mm width ones on in place of the current 195mm, have I?? Many thanks!

For what its worth; I've changed the spark plugs with Bosch replacements and had the throttle body cleaned out. The result? Feels like the car has almost been transformed! A much more responsive throttle and feels like its unleashed another 20bhp from somewhere — it may be placebo but the car suddenly feels much more fun and sporty to drive. Pleased!

Heavy rainfall: soaking wet rear passenger footwell.

Thanks very much. On closer inspection may scutter panel/cover doesn't appear to be fitted right either. I'll fix this and hopefully that might have been the problem. -

Does anyone know where I can get hold of a foliage cover seal or better yet, a foliage cover and seal? Just spoken with VW who've said they no longer supply them, discontinued. Thanks in advance! -
Good to know, thanks... The garage who looked after my old 1.8T passed it despite it being a de-cat...

A New Problem. My ABS dash light has never worked, never flashed at start up and gone out and never illuminated at all. I took the switch out yesterday and I can see why. I have proof that the ABS sensors were done in 2012 and the ABS system itself does work, as I tried it last night. However, the bulb looks to have been tampered with, am I right? Surely a blown bulb wouldn't look anything like this. A little confused... I'm under the impression that I need this bulb to work, regardless of the system itself working, in order to pass my MOT?
