  1. Em,

     

    Boring out engine just means increasing capacity or displacement e.g. from 2.9L to 3.1L. Not sure on exact figures but would have said 260-280BHP (??) (without forced induction) using all mentioned above mods and increasing displacement. Still going to cost helluva lot of cash tho and as mentioned already, turbo or supercharging much better value. Cossie's are 2.0L twin cam 16V with a large turbo as standard (escort around 225BHP as standard) hence why the extra power from "just" a 2L.

  3. You don't say whether your car is a 16V / G60 ?

     

    Anyways, I'd budget about £15-£30 for the timing belt, not sure price for tensioner if needs replaced, and a couple of hrs labour to replace the timing belt. However, you would be best advised to get it replace ASAP unless you want REAl problems to possibly happen as consequence of timing belt snapping etc.

  4. Yes Dazzyvr6, I have heard of secondhand parts and DIY fitting funnily enough.

     

    Fine, I still maintain there is no way you'll get all those parts (whether you pay the labour yourself to fit them or not) for £2000 or under new and you would be damned lucky to get them secondhand for that money either. Those parts (new) add up to at least £3000 alone without fitting.

     

    New (Min) Secondhand (Average)

     

    Schrick £1300 (£750-£1000)

    Cams £500 (£350)

    CAI £150 (£80)

    BB TB £250 (£100)

    Remap £450 (£250 (bare ECU)

    Exhaust £350 (£150)

     

    Total £3000 £1830

     

    TBH, my original point I was going to make was that I reckon a 25-30BHP increase for £2000-£3000 is pretty poor. IMO better with Stage 1 turbo or supercharger kit (70BHP increase for same money). I just wanted to know what this guy had done to his NA VR6 to give a claimed 240BHP....

  5. Correct dazzyvr6.

     

    The bottom line is that if you have stuff advertised on ebay and someone buys it then you, the seller, decide to sell it elsewhere (maybe even before the person purchased the item), then you are obliged to remove it from being an active listing., to avoid other people potentially buying an itme that isn't available for sale.

     

    At the very least you should have a legal disclaimer on the listing saying e.g. "item advertised elsewhere, so I reserve the right to end listing early". The seller still hasn't removed the listing, it's still up and active, and to top it all off he is advertising 3 sets of the items, when he actually only has one set. Think I am entitled to be a little annoyed....

  6. Pretty sure there is a guy on here with Shrick manifold, cams, throttle body, remap, induction and exhaust and only 225BHP.

     

    And yes bcstudent, that's what I thought, hence why I said "I take it it's turbo'd", because he mentioned "my K-Tec turbo'd" but also wanted to confirm whether Clio 182 or Renault 5 GTT....so don't need to be a detective thanks.

     

    Oh yeah, and if you can get a new Schrick manifold (£1300 plus fitting), AMD or whoever else remap (£450+ and fitting), Schrick cams £600ish plus fitting), BB throttle-body (£150 plus fitting), full exhaust (£350 fitted), CAI £100-£150 fitted) including fitting for all this for £2000 then I'll eat my hat. There's no way you would get all these new parts and fitting for £2000, period.

  7. Just discovered this thread and makes interesting reading. So vr6to182cup, what's been done to your Clio182 to give 260+BHP, take it it's turbo'd (or are you talking about a R5 GTT ??

     

    What did you have done to your NA VR6 to give 240BHP? You would need to spend a SUBSTANTIAL amount on any VR6 engine to give 240BHP without forced induction i.e. we're talking set of cams, remapped ECU, big-bore throttlebody, CAI kit, variable intake manifold and the rest etc. e.g exhaust (total approx. maybe £3000 ish if you get discounted bits and all done at same time)

     

    Most I've heard of (without overbore / displacement increase i.e. 3.0 - 3.1L - more serious wedge including forged crank and pistons plus new rods) was a VR6 running approx. 230BHP (all the above mods and more).

  8. Pretty annoyed at moment, used the buy-it-now option on a set of wheels for sale on ebay and won the item without auction ending and got email to state I was the winner etc but then I got an email from the seller stating sorry but the wheels had already been sold.

     

    I'm sure that if the item was still listed and active then legally I am still entitled to purchase the wheels ??

     

    Anyone else have an opinion or experineced same / similar ??

  9. You can buy tools at most good motor factors or Halfords or DIY stores that have a head full of many spring-loaded metal pins that automatically form around the shape of the head of the bolt you need to remove and then you just use a wheelbrace on the tool to remove the bolt.

I would stick with 205/40 R16 tyres all round mate and fit 7.5 x 16" alloys with a offset of ET33-35 to fill the arches properly and still look phat, but you could go 8 x 16" all round for a even wider look e.g. Porsche Design 90's and with 20mm spacers offset would be still ok at ET33ish.

     

    Any lower offset or wider and you will have problems with poss. tyres catching (need rolled arches) and clearing the rear axle / struts, unless you fit coilovers or use spacers to bring down the ET.

    Just wondering if anyone has actually completed one of these set-ups in the UK yet ? Using G60 PG bottom end and ABA crossflow head with custom intake manifold and relocated alternator etc. Haven't seen any doing the rounds and only a couple in the US.

     

    Lots of set-ups have been done using turbo's in place of the G60 charger but it's not the same really :?

  12. What can I say, I'm a scientist doing my PhD on bacteria that (amongst other things) cause production of hydrogen sulfide, so thought this was the simplest way of explaining why you smell "rotten eggs" from some catalysts.

  13. 1996 VR6 with full black heated leather (if non-recaro, just standard seats) with lower than average miles, I would have said £5.5 to £6k is a fair price to advertise if the car is mint condition with full VAGSH with all necessary bits present and correct and would accept £5 to £5.5k when haggling. Just don't seem to be making as strong money recently. Good luck with whatever you decide.

  14. Any catalytic converters can smell like rotten eggs.

     

    This results from excessive hydrogen sulfide (the rotten eggs smell) production (caused by a chemical reaction between sulfur deposits left on the catalyst surface with water vapour from the exhaust) and is typically caused by high fuel sulfur content (deposits build-up over time) or air - fuel mixture imbalance e.g caused by failing O2 sensor.

    EDIT: UK scientists are required to use US-style nomenclature and spelling to have uniform understanding across the whole scientific community e.g written reports and papers, so apologies for the US-spelling of "sulphide" and "sulphur".....


  15. Well TBH mate it's not a G60 it's a 16V to G60 conversion, like my white 16V to G60 converted C a while back.

     

    Mine had a similar engine spec (with brand new VR6 clutch and lightened flywheel, without the front mount and had Koni TA's instead of coilovers, no Audi handles and sideskirts or smoothed panel (although I had the bodywork all brought back to as it should be and fully rersprayed) and no Eiback ARB's and no leather and I advertised at £3.5K o.n.o and got just over £3k.

     

    With the leather and bodyworks extra's I would have said £4.5k is a fair price to advertise at max going down to poss £4000 when bargaining.
