What a ridiculous survey,.................."I don't believe it!" Alfa in the top 10 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Some way above VW, Hmmm I smell Bullsch1tt. Its all about fullfilling owner's expectations.......or not! If I had an Alfa and it didn't go wrong/fall apart every time I drove it I'd probably give it 5 stars. However if I had a new VW and it went wrong twice a year I'd probably slate it. Utterly Pointless.

Yes, got a VW one, it was £22 plus VAT from TPS. I had no problem getting the screw back in strangely enough, just getting it out. I've now just finished fitting my Phillips 80% brighter bulbs now in the dark, so off for a drive to test both bits!

All done! What a sh1t of a job! Got the original screw back in too, couldn't have done this job without removing the 2 shear bolts mentioned above out. Well worth noting, it give you much better access, got some nice posi head machine screws in there now. It all works properly now too. Only trouble is I have to do my other halfs now as you need almost superhuman strength to fire the starter on hers!

Not to worry, I've just read some old posts on this, the hammer is coming out to break the old switch out!
-
I'm in the middle of this job, how the heck can you get to the screw that holds the switch part. I've never seen anything so ridiculous. I've also removed the 2 shear bolts that hold the lock cylinder housing to gain extra millimetres buts its still impossible to get at. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!

Well you learn somewthing new every day, I assumed it was all one of the same! I'll have a gander later today and sort my oil temp sensor out too if the rain ever stops.... Cheers Chaps

So am I right in thinking I could use my existing barrel in a new switch, I assumed a new switch would come with a new barrel.

I have a soft spot for them too. A friends of mine is selling a 32k mile one for 5k. Bit put off by the horror stories though and I am a previous RX-7 owner!

I've noticed lately that my stereo sometimes doesn't come alive after I start the car, however a little jiggle of the ignition key and she works, but if I then go over a bump, the key must move slightly in the lock and it will cut out again until I reposition it. Its like I've got too much slack in the switch, I've even had the engine ignition cut out temporarily whilst repositioning the key within the slack. I assume this can only be the switch at fault? Any ideas how much they are and if I can reset it to work with my existing key?

I can't believe I've been driving round for years without it. Its so much more solid now! I wonder how many people have it fitted?

Found it, lock at will!

Just got it fitted, I had to drill and tap the headunit slightly bigger than the existing hole but it now fits perfectly. Thanks muchly :-)

Defo up for one when the time comes.

Cool, that makes sense, can you get them anywhere?

I wonder if headunits differ in weight a lot, mine is an old kenwood, driving a changer in the boot, but it does still have a cassette slot in it too, were thes much heavier than modern, say mp3 units?
-
I'm trying to get my head unit back in the dash and I've noticed the following. The cage that supports the (heavy) headunit can obviously only grip on the front edge of the centre console, the stereo remains unsupported apart from that. That doesn't seem satisfactory to me after extensively de-rattling the dash area. The 'shelf' type structure that exists within the dash (mine is covered in black felt), I would assume is there to support the headunit? The issue here being that it sits about 2cm lower than the headunits base, and therefore can only support the headunits weight if it is mounted at a silly angle (ie not flush with the centre console. I know there is a tab of metal at the back of the headunit slot with a hole in it, I'm assuming that could be utilised if a bolt/stud were fitted in the back of the headunit, I have some seen some headunits with that kind of fitting. What has everyone else done to keep there headunit secure? I've broken and repaired 2 centre consoles in the last 5 years, it doesn't seem right to just mount it with the cage on the flimsy centre console. I'm erring towards fitting a block of wood to the 'shelf', that would support the headunit from below. Any advise appreciated :)

Or wrap some tape round it to increase its size and make it a tighter fit....

Here's one of my other halfs Blackberry VR6 on a sunny Sunday earlier this year. 8)

Yes! Get that one done too! :D

It may just be the sliding part of the caliper. Take the caliper off, remove the pads and check the caliper moves on the carrier pins ok. You might be able to get away with removing the sliding bits, clean with emery cloth or similar and regrease. If the piston is seized in the caliper housing then its more complicated, new seals might be needed.

I was hoping to spend a little less than that and my local VW dealer quoted £60 for 4. I only really need the two front ones.

I'm after some black originalish mats, I haven't got the screws to hold them in place so I require them aswell if poss. Does anyone know where I can get some? Cheers Lisa

I've just had the dash out of mine to do the heater matrix....anyway after 6 years of driving round with appalling rattles I now know why! The Clifford alarm install was horrendous. There were relays dangling everywhere, unsecured wiring, broken clips and best of all the metal control module for the alarm (sharp metal box) was sited on top of the heater box, unsecured. it was free to hit the dash, the centre console, the heater box itself. Now I've put it all back together properly and removed about 30m of unecessary stereo wiring its awesomely quiet and tight. Feels like a new car! I've blamed the suspension from day one and after I'd spent a small fortune on front suspension rebuild it still rattled, hence getting the dash out, well worth it!
