  1. Hello,

I've been a member on here for a while, not sure If I ever intruduced myself properly, some of you may know me from other forums / and that thing called real life :D.

I am Pete, and I have ran The VR6 Owners Club for over 7 years now, great fun being able to help other like minded folk, so a huge sucess on that front!

    I'm on my 3rd VR6 now!

My first mk3 VR6 had a little 80MPH run in with the nurburging :(

now. house is done! so I bought this:

bought as a non runner, needed head gasket, timing chains, matrix and everything else doing!

    Here's my build thread! viewtopic.php?f=11&t=83314

enjoy, and might see you at some events this year!

  2. what a hotch-potch of mk2/3/4 parts, reminds me of the VW south africa MK1 models.

on the subject of the distribution unit, I have a corrado (albeit a mk2 golf part number, which they all are) unit which I'm eventually going to put in my 8v when I can be bothered, the 8v feet/screen flap lever arm broke and you can't really replace it.

looking over the unit this weekend and groping under the dash of the 8v to reconnect and fix the main air flap, I realised why the 8v has passat controls in it, someone broke the old ones trying to force the air flaps.

it's pretty clear from comparing the smoothness of the units in/out of the car and looking at all the moving parts, that a combination of dirt, wear on the foam sealing pieces etc is the cause of the dash controls getting stiff then breaking.

I lubricated the cogs and pivot points with PTFE spray and it improved no end, and it really doesn't help that the corrado has no filter into the system like the big pollen filters on mk3's and 4's.

I don't think, from my investigations, that the pivot areas for the flaps actually wear, it seems all down to dirt, lack of lubrication and the old foam dampers and seals, all which I think can be cleaned and fixed.

Only problem is, it's a dash out job to do really, I did improve the 8v one enough to make it actually work again though.

will take some pics of the unit out of the car and point out the areas.

Would this stuff do the job with the pivot points etc to keep things 'loose'? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GT85-SPRAY-LUBRIC ... 20b68cb44a

  3. As this topic is being covered over various areas of the forum, I thought I'd start off a thread where all information can be collated in relation to the problems and solutions with regards to the heater controls on the late Corrado (rotary controls).

So if anyone has any tips / tricks for repairing / replacing the troublesome unit, please add your comments!

Here's a few threads i've collated together from recent conversation.

  4. Where's the cheapest place to get a sump gasket guys?

ive had different prices from a couple of places...

Euro car parts £26 + VAT

    General Traffic £19

Is there just the one type to get or anything else to take into consideration?

  5. Yeah the surface area of 2 flaps being blown on (Steady Toad / Supercharged) can put up quite a resistance to move. I always move my flaps on speed 1, or no fan :D

Yeah I believe the MK3 uses the same cable system but I've never delved behind the dash to find out for sure. A lot of them have factory A/C (better than the dealer fit Diava system Corrados got!) which will be the main differences.

ahhh. they have a personality all of there own! and sound as quirty as some of the VB scripts I write :)

  6. I spoke to vinve @ stealth the other day, who paid £180 for a new set of passat controls from the stealer... crazy money...

I paid £56 for a set of MK3 Passat ones last year (for a 96 model). SEAT have a different pricing policy on parts compared to VW so we may be in luck. I looked at 6 Corrados in the last two months and all of them had the tight switch problem.

know what you are saying! usually the bowden cables seen better days! luckily mine are ok, just that the heater controls fell apart when doing my matrix!

  7. Right, I spoke to the guys at the Phirm today about fitting R32 starters to VR 'boxes. In short, they recommended just fitting a genuine Bosch VR6 replacement starter motor. Basically, the design is different: the R32 starter is predictably a more modern design and is brushless. Also, there is a difference in the depth of the gearbox bellhousing as well as the flywheel being different, so they were unsure whether an R32 starter would marry up correctly to a VR6 flywheel. HTH, John.

That was my understanding too. but the golf v5 is more powerful than a standard vr6 one, not sure if it's burshless or not.
