Top Mounts (And Bearing) Replacements A howto????? Anyone
stevie_f_2004 posted a topic in Drivetrain
Anyone got a step by step guide on changing the front top mounts????Can these be changed without removing the strut????I've checked ETOS and teh Bentley manual and nothing definitive however it looks possible. I do have the VAG top nut removers in anticaption and the top mounts and bearings have been in the garge for nealry 9 months now ???? A I really don't want to affect the aligment so near to Christmas!!!!! -
Just a note also on preventative maintenance of the head gasket; worth while changing over the fuel filter and also air filter regularly. According to me dad anyway....and he also harps on about regulary checking and changing coolant to ensure temps are kept to a minimum, check the radiator for leaks as overheating is a major cause of the HG blowing and get any misfiring problems sorted as this can also lead to damage of the head gasket.....My childhood memories of me dad are bleeding brakes and talking to his feet whilst he was constantly "maintaining" his Hilman Avenger out in the street...hardcore diy..er....put me off cars for years did that Avenger!!!! Head only needs skimmed if it's damaged. A damaged head will result in the new gasket not fully sealing and hence leaking and "blowing" again

Sorry to here about the troubles; hope you get it sorted soon.....too good a car to keep off the road... The HG is a job I'm going to tackle in the near future....got a new cover head cover gasket seal from ebay to store away and I'll pick up a head gasket and get it done then....I'll try some preventative maintenance.... Best of luck getting it sorted....

Putting our Rado's away for Winter ????
stevie_f_2004 replied to mtc R32's topic in General Car Chat
I'll be taking mine out this winter for a few miles.....locked it up last winter and nearly set me back for a full set of brake disks due to corrosion.....I know one guy how's got a Lotus and he ended up having to replace the two rear brake calipers and disks because of the same issue...... If you're goin' to lock them away for winter make sure you take precautions -
Is it me or is it a case when doing jobs on the C that you end up spending near enough the same cost on new tools as the dealer would charge for doing the job is the first place???? At the weekend bought new small sized socket set (don't know the technical term for the size but goes upto 10mm/36mm 1/4inch drive deep socket/Snap-on socket driver screw driver handle thingy for taking the new sized small sockets complete with two additional extensions......used it once now can't find it!!!! All to change the sump and gasket!!!!!!Although I did get to use my brand new trolley jack and axle stands that I bought previously just in case a job like this came up :!:

I put the redline MTL MT90 in the gear box and it made some differnce...although a little pricey the difference in the gearbox is worth it!!!!I purchased two new plugs to replace the old ones however stealers gave me the wrong ones...Phoned them up and said the correct ones were discontinued...couldn't be arsed taking them back Good tip is to stick a heavy duty magnetic on the low plug, run the car for half an hour to pick up any metal deposits within the gear box before renewing....I picked up a few when I changed mine...
