Apparently so, I've not heard tappets before, just went on what my dad said once while in the car. it stops almost completely after the car's warmed up. My local mechanic is well into his VWs and has been doing all our cars for yonks, so I'd have no quarms on getting him to do it. He said he'd have to look into the cost and get back to me next week. i'm just a bit worried that i'm gonna have a corrado shaped hole in my pocket again!

Hi guys, I just got the vr back from my local garage, now with an mot :D But, (always a but!) they've told me that the tapping noise that i thought was the tappets, is most likely to be the big end bearing shells, and i've been advised to drive very carefully, especially when the engines cold! Now, I'm not shy when it comes to getting the my hands dirty, but is this a job that could be done by a competent  diy mechanic? I've got my trusty vr6 pocket mechanic book and bentley manual, and i'm quite keen on going for it. Otherwise, what sort of cost should i be expecting from a garage to replace them? Also, is there anything else down there that's worth checking or replacing at the same time? Thanks in advance, Jonny

Ha! well, if it's gonna go that way, My local Vag refused to give me a BJ yesterday, but said that i could have one any time after then. Aren't I a lucky boy. ...damn.

cheers guys, I sorted it in the end, turned out I wasn't hammering hard enough! I hammered the crap out of the thing and it finally split. The job's just about done now, i've taken it to my local garage to get the tracking checked and hopefully pass my mot now. I ended up needing to replace the track rod end with one from gsf, as vw had forgotten to order one in and gsf had one in stock, so i'll see how it goes, otherwise i'll have to replace it again. I can't wait to get it back now, a week without the raddo has been doing my head in!
-
I ended up finding 1 wire i hadn't plugged in, stuck it in the right place and they work now. Failing that, you could always dissconnect the loom for the mot, and plug it in again afterwards. you didn't hear that from me tho!
-
thanks for the replies. I found out that halfrauds do the splitter, so i just got myself one. I'm replacing the actual hub as one of the wheel bolt socket threads is gone, but I've started removing the housing now so i can make sure i fit the new one on properly, and while i'm there i'll do the bearings. I'm having trouble with splitting the ball joint tho. halfords gave me a bolt up type splitter, which has already buggered it's self up! lucky i was dubious of it and bought a fork type too. Now, i've broken the rubber seal trying, but i still can't get it split. I assume there's some kind of trick to doing it? Forgive my ignorance, i've not done ball joints before.
-
Hi guys, Is there any way to remove a front wheel hub on my vr without splitting the ball joints and taking the lot off? I've removed the wheel, caliper and disc, but I don't have a ball joint splitter! any ideas? Thanks, Jonny

Ha, sorry if I sounded depressed. I'm not really, don't worry! i've had much worse mot failures with aircooled dubs, holes in floorpans/heater channels etc. Just annoying coz its a long weekend without the raddo, which is my daily car. Funny how it takes driving a newer, more practical and more reliable car to make me realise how good the corrado is! Anyway, suns just starting to peer through the clouds, so I can go out there and get it ready to pass when tuesday rolls around.
-
Only silly things: Sidelights not working since i uprated the loom, and I have a bolt missing on a front wheel, since the hub got threaded. To make matters worse, i just got robbed by the stealers £70 for a new hub, might as well replace the bearings while i'm there too. Trouble is, it's easter now so I need to wait til tuesday to be back on the road. It's raining, and i'm a wimp, so no biking right now. Means i'm stuck driving my mums merc gAy-class around for the weekend (which is poo, by the way!). Makes me miss the raddo even more. Rant over.

Hang on, I've got a 1994 VR6 auto on an L reg. Does that mean my car doesn't really exist? ...goes and checks the driveway... Unless it wasn't officially sold til 95 maybe? I'll have a look at the paperwork sometime
-
Yeah i see your point there. In fact, thinking about it I guess in many ways the cbr's a safe option for a new rider. Mine's an 02 reg 600F, so i dunno about earlier ones. the power band is very gradual so they're as good round town as they are on a B road burn. The brakes are brilliant too. (compared to my old 400 bandit, anyway) when I started at 16-17 years old, i made some silly mistakes at first, some of which would've been worse if i was on a fast bike, but I was young and reckless then! Well, more so than i am now, anyway. I still find nailing it down an open road hard to resist sometimes. As for insurance, try http://www.motorcycledirect.co.uk I can't say what they're like with claims (touch wood), but the premiums aren't bad. Mind you, i still don't get why they're charging me £150 more to have the cbr over an R6!

I agree with bcstudent, you might as well do the direct access, that way you don't need to wait for 2 years like i had to (was too young when i took my test). As for bikes, The race replica 125's are pretty annoying, they still sound like 125s and parts get expensive coz they're so highly strung. Personally for a 1st bike, i'd reccomend something along the lines of a honda cb500 or maybe a 600 bandit. Good for insurance and servicing. I currently ride a CBR600, but I reckon if it was my first bike i'd of overdone it and stacked it by now, tho it could just be me. Definately do it for the summer tho, nothing better than a good ride on a summers day!

Cheers, I cleaned the isv out and it seems to be ok now, unless it's an intermittant thing somewhere else. Mind you, the isv was really filthy. I guess it's fingers crossed for now. Thanks for the advice. Jonny

Hi guys, I've got a strange problem with my VR. Just pulled into the driveway, and it's revving by its self basicly! It's an auto, so in drive it sticks at about 1000rpm at idle, which is obviously high anyway. When it's in neutral, it'll rev by its self between 1000 and 2000 rpm, up and down rythmicly, without my foot on the pedal. A few weeks ago, i turned it on, and it revved it's self to 3000, i put my foot on the pedal once and it stopped and stalled. I keep thinking back to when the previous owner told me the MAF is on it's way out. dunno if could be something to do with it maybe? Unless it's haunted, of course. Cheers, Jonny

funnily enough, the footwells are almost perfect. It's an odd one really, all the rust is on the body, nothing on the chassis. i guess it was stored for a while before i got it. It's perfectly drivable, tho i'm sure the front panel is held on with nothing but air and luck. Course you could have one as a daily driver, that's what the AA is for! They blacklisted me a couple of years ago with the bug, and was told i'd have to pay if i called them out again within the year!

Here's the van, took longer than i thought to get it home, and it got too dark to take pics. As you can see, it's a bit of a shed, and i've got a lot of grinding, welding and painting to be getting on with. unfortunately, my garage is about 6 inches too low, so i'm about to make a temporary car port to work in. can't have the neighbours looking in and getting arc eyed  Good one, i think you might have it there. my mate dave enjoyed that one too, and it's his birthday. perfect.
-
Ah yes, i'm sure i'll come up with a name yet. Course, i've still got a bug to work on at the same time which should get interesting. I can imagine i'll start swapping bits around on them sooner or later!

Alright guys, thought some of you might be interested, i know it's a corrado forum, but I'm well excited so thought i'd share it with you all. I'm just about to go out and buy a VW camper! 1978 bay window, and it's a proper shed. got a lot of welding to do over the next few months, but one day it'll be sweet. I'll be going off to pay in a while, and i'll get some pics up when the recovery truck arrives later (yes, its that bad). Feels like christmas tho, last time i was this excited about a car, i ended up with a corrado! Cant wait! Jonny

For me, it's the fact they're quick and good looking, but don't make a song and dance about it like a lot of jap cars. plus my mum couldn't complain coz it's "just another volkswagen"! other than that, the rear spoiler is cool, and there's something about the way the bonnet curves down to the rectangular lights that's lovely!

oh yeah, i forgot to mention my wiring. more gaffa there too! fingers crossed, it was the blower fan inlet cover under the scuttle panel. the gasket was hard as nails and it'd been snapped at one of the clips, again using a screwdriver or something. Either that or the door membrain, which i've also replaced. i've pulled the carpet and rotten, smelly underlay out, and i've stuck a dehumidifier in there with an electric heater to dry it out. Just waiting for it to rain now to find out for sure. Dunno what it is with some people. my bug is even worse, everything looks like they started welding up with good intentions, but then sacked it halfway and bunged a load of filler on instead! nice when you're grinding off old welds and get an unexpected breath full of filler!

Alright guys, just spent a day working on the rado sorting out my rainwater puddle in the passenger footwell. In the process, I've found that my car has been at the hands of a serial bodger. one of the previous owners loved his gaffa tape a bit much. i've got patched up heater pipes with gaffa, a cling film door membrain stuck on with gaffa. That and my foliage cover seemed to have been wedged on/off with some sort of screwdriver/knife/axe contraption  New one of them, then! Anyway, it got me thinking. I bet some of you lot have found (or done :( ) some classic bodge jobs in the past. What you got?

Tis a good show, i've been watching it all along too. Anyone who missed it, they repeat it on friday and sunday night IIRC. The bird's not bad either.

Chill, everyone! Just going from what the previous owner told me. Anyway, i've had a prod with the multimeter, which although it might not be the best way of testing, it's proven that the voltage is about right. (according to what i've found on some other threads in search, anyway) its a 6 pin job. at idle, i've got 2.3v, and at 3000 rpm i've got 2.8v. it increases steadily with the revs. so i assume that this means the MAF is doing something right, if not everything. for the record, i definately would rather avoid having to spend £300 on it, and to be honest, i'd leave it til it stalled at every junction before i spent that much! Especially since i've just sent off 4 speedlines to get refurbed and 4 new boots. I can't wait to get VAG-com now, i wonder how many faults its gonna find!
-
Thanks for all the comments, it's given me a lot to try. The only reason i think it is the MAF sensor is because i think the previous owner told me that was the problem. for him, it only stalled once, but its happened 3 times in 5 days for me now, so whatever it is, it's getting worse. Mind you, he told me the new part is about £50-100, so its probably something different after all. I have just ordered a VAG-com lead off ebay, so i'll give that a try first and see what happens. i'll have a dig about for my multimeter and try testing the MAF in the meantime. As for the VAG-com, obviously i get the software from ross-tech, hook the lead up to the car (16 pin by the gear select), and the other end to my old pc. is there anything else i need to do first? (besides learning to use the software) Cheers, Jonny

Hi guys, my corrado has started stalling occasionally when slowing down for lights, junctions etc. When i bought the car, the previous owner told me about the problem, but i can't remember what part he said needed replacing. something like air _____ meter. so i'm thinking air flow meter, would this make the car stall if its going wrong? otherwise what else could it be. Serves me right for not listening properly first time round! Jonny
