Maintenance evening courses in Surrey/Hampshire area?
Jonny_L replied to martyjmcfly's topic in General Car Chat
Oh that's a pain, They were supposed to call me back yesterday but never did, I guess that'll be why then. You'll have to hope the april course will be more popular then. I can't go then since I can't make the 2nd half of the course. Shame, but then not really since I'll be riding through the south coast of france and northern spain by then  -
How sweet would it look with a full length ragtop. Wouldn't fancy fitting one of those much though! Mancorr, If your girlfriend's good with upholstery, you could go to a materials place and find yourself something really nice to replace the original, a bit of suede or something, kind of OEM+ style. That way it'll give you something to show for all your hard work and expense, though let's hope there's not too much for your sake. I know headlinings probably the least of your worries at the mo, but if you've got grey headlining in at the moment, stick with a similar colour. My sister's golf cab has a black roof, and it makes the interior really dark.

  I thought I had problems. I should think the roof will need respraying too if you're doing any welding to it at all. That sucks, hope you get it sorted. I'd offer to weld it up for you, but you're a bit far away, and i'd be too scared to do something like that  Just make sure you find a bloody good welder, the last thing you want is any warping from the heat. P.S. What's a headling? Sorry, couldn't resist.

Spot the speed camera! some in bournemouth and christchurch
Jonny_L replied to Craig's topic in General Car Chat
13/19 too. That's pretty scary isn't it. While I try never to go over the limit in built up areas anyway, there's some in there that would've caught me out on the more open stretches. I've not heard of those tripod cameras before either. Reminds me, the other day I got flashed by an oncoming driver so slowed down, and all I saw was a white van with a billboard leaning against it advertising a garden centre or something, and another bill board at the back under the window. looked in the mirror and it had the usual blacked out windows with a hole in one. Can't of been, surely... Can it? They usually only get the fronts of cars those ones, I used to play silly buggers with them on the bike, til I realised they just had to turn around and get my plate  Lucky. Cool quiz though. -
I get the feeling this is gonna be a cool thread 8) I once saw a nova with the gte clocks, hate to say it but it looked pretty good (the dash only, that is  ). Wouldn't you loose the MFA though? Unless you incorporate the original lcd somehow, though I'm guessing it'd mean some major surgery on your standard clocks! Good luck fitting it, I hope to see some piccies one day.

Hmmm, all the drawbacks of a bike, exposure to the elements, no storage space, etc. but you can't filter through traffic, get cheap tax or skip congestion charges! Seems a bit pointless to me. Would be a cool track toy though, which I suppose is what they're meant for, those things are damn quick. Remember the top gear test with the atom? They got a bloke on a CBR600 to go around the track against it. He lost, but he really didn't look like he knew what he was doing. Probably an amateur rider brought in by bike hating Clarkson. Saying that, That car would probably give Valentino (on a CBR6  ) a run for his money in the right hands.

Maintenance evening courses in Surrey/Hampshire area?
Jonny_L replied to martyjmcfly's topic in General Car Chat
I just tried calling the college, but they're closed til the 3rd of Jan now. I've done a few different evening courses and they're usually really good with late arrivals, so with a bit of luck just a quick call on the 3rd will sort it. It'd be really good to get a load of us doing it, tho I'm going travelling later in the year so it's now or never for me I'm afraid! The more I think about it, it's probably a good idea, since i'm actually travelling round europe by motorbike on my own for a couple of months. Maybe I'll pick up something that'll help me if I break down (other than the free BMW breakdown cover I got when I bought the bike  ). -

Thats cool, good work. I'm quite tempted too, though I might be cutting it a bit fine now. I never got round to popping in to talk to someone, did you find out anything else about the course in the end, or are you just giving it a go? -
Done. Though (and I never thought i'd find myself saying this), that volvo looks damn nice. What a random selection of cars to choose from.

I always thought the Porsche Cayman was a bit plain..
Jonny_L replied to Jim's topic in General Car Chat
When I first read the title to this thread, I thought it said Cayenne, and thought, blimey, it'd take some doing to make one of them look good  That's very nice though, not so sure about all the yellow inside, looks a bit tacky from the pictures, but I wouldn't say no (though i'd rather a 911!). I like these caymans, mainly because I've not seen many. It's usually 911s or boxters round here, so they make a nice change. What on earth is the point in putting BHP per Litre in the specs tho?! From that page, how mad is this! 1054 bhp, and 760 ft lb's, crikey, i'll take it! -
How many of us have near original spec Corrados?
Jonny_L replied to Bojmobile's topic in General Car Chat
Actually, now that you all mention it, mines got an alarm, sound system and headlight loom. So to be really anal, it's not 100% standard, though if I wanted to, I could change it back to having crappy sounds, dim headlights, and make it easier to steal  Oh and the steering wheel's not the factory wheel, though it is a VW one from a different Corrado, and leather, I couldn't find a factory one at the time so had to make do unfortunatley. -

Off the top of my head, it's moonlight blue I think. If that's an original colour? With black leather. Unfortunately it doesn't look quite as nice as that at the moment, see my thread about paintwork  One day though. -

I'm gonna be lazy and just post the pic of mine from the members gallery. Mmmmm, that fresh autoglym shine. -

Yep, I've tried to keep mine original, Speedlines, std height, just as VW intended. I like a lot of custom rado's that i've seen, but personally I'm thinking if it ain't broke, don't fix it (works out much cheaper that way too ;) ). I might be forced to convert to manual one day though! -
Is it a bad idea to sell a car this close to Christmas?
Jonny_L replied to Jonny_L's topic in General Car Chat
Yeah that price is o.n.o. really. This CVT thing sounds quite interesting, I always wonder whether it's good for the engine to be revving like that, it sounds like a clutch slipping. It'd probably be quite good if it had the power to back it. I will have a goose at part ex, though i'm not actually planning on spending much more money than that so it could get interesting. -
No worries! With a bit of luck someone will do you one with black wheels now. I have to admit, if it wasn't for the long way round, I wouldn't ever of set foot in a BMW dealership. I used to hate BMW cars (still do most of the time), something that ran in the family since my german grandparents only ever bought mercs  anyway, I tested a 1200GS, loved it, but I wanted to spend half the money that one was going for. I compromised, decided i'm not gonna be going round the world any time soon, so I settled with the R1150R. To me it seems roughly the same thing as the 1150GS, but it's a roadster version without the off road capabilities. Now I'm a sucker for boxer engines, I'm really tempted to get the R1200 S in a year or 2.

I was gonna stick it up for £3900. Are you interested or just asking? If so I wish I hadn't slated it so much now  Walesy, You could be right, i'm not sure. It does this odd thing where when you put your foot down, it revs up, then sits at the same RPM as the car accelerates, as opposed to going through the gears like a normal auto. Quite odd really, but it seems to work. It's tiptronic (aka stepspeed), but it'll change gear for you if you rev it too high anyway, and it's really slow at changing manually, so not much point to it! -

Jonny_L replied to Jonny_L's topic in General Car Chat
True, but i've learnt never to get annoyed with the elderly for driving them so slow, THEY CAN'T GO ANY FASTER!! In another world, with a manual box and centred steering column, i'd make do with it, but no. To the right person, it'd be great, it's on a 52 reg with only 8500 miles, so with a bit of luck i'll get some good cashish for it. Anyone want to buy a Rover 25 by the way? ;) -
Evening all, Looks like the C's gonna be off the road for a bit again, so i'm thinking of selling my inherited rover 25 and getting something better. This rover's really starting to annoy me, the steering wheel's not central to the drivers seat, it steams up every time I step in a puddle, and i'm not even gonna start on the "stepspeed" auto box  But, is there much point in spending money on advertising this close to Christmas? I want rid, and I'm seriously thinking about an Alfa 156, but I'm just wondering whether I should hold out til January when everyone's stopped spending money on xmas, and starts spending money on other things! Or does it make no difference. Any thoughts?
-
Here's a quick one for ya, not 100% perfect but you get an idea, looks cool. I'll let someone else do the black wheels for you coz I don't know how  They're meant to be really nice bikes, not tried one, but you get the best of both worlds with a big fast inline 4 and the weird and wonderful tele-lever suspension in one. Lovely.

Ok turns out it's not fixed at all. Today it started to get really hot again, 120 degree oil, and the water temp reached 115 ish on the gauge (which is apparently inacurate anyway, as I said before). I didn't hear the fan, so i'm assuming that's still an issue. Water light came on, I pulled over to have a look. The level was too high, so I assumed it was another air lock, let it cool for a bit and carried on. Then the light came on again, and I have a leak from what appeared to be under the expansion tank. I'm assuming that is a thermostat issue, though I've not checked for waxy bits in the water yet. If it is, I suppose it's a question of whether it's the cause or an effect of the problem. First thing i'm gonna do is take it back to the garage and have a word. This'll be the 3rd time for the same problem, so they better pull their fingers out. What's worse is this time I had 2 mates in the car who are forever ripping it out of me coz I have so much trouble with VW's but stick with them regardless. I'm never gonna hear the end of it now
-
I got me one of These They do a slightly cheaper one too, I found it on machine mart (have a goose if there's one near you, you might even be able to go and look), then bought it on ebay cheaper. Quality is pretty good for the price and it looks sweet when loaded up with tools. The bottom cupboard is really handy for chucking stuff in like angle grinders, crowbars and maahussive torque wrenches. It's certainly not gonna fall to bits any time soon, only things I did was stick some of those soft pads for protecting floors in some stratigic places to stop the odd rattle, and put some non slip material at the bottom of each drawer. anyone who's tried rolling one of those things on concrete without that stuff will know how deafening it can get  Edit: Sorry, just re-read your post properly, they do some nice top boxes too
-
Yep, and it's all plumbed exactly as it was. Excuse my ignorance, what's a water-oil exchanger? For the record, I was told last time it was in the garage that the water gauge is out, though i'm not sure what way so I'll try and plug it in to VAG-com again to get a better idea, with a bit of luck it'll be about 7 degrees too high, which would mean it sits at 100 degrees. I can only hope :)

I keep seeing Corrado's around being driven by middle aged women (and not milfs, I might add). I've never spoken to any C owners in the "real world" tho! That'll make me a former old fart who's still a hippy (but keeps it quiet), while still being a proper bloke... Sounds about right TBH
