  1. Quite. I don't *like* it either, but those figures would make it so impressive it's just not true..

    S3 or R32?

That's the same R32 we're talking about? The one Vicky-Butler Henderson yawned in whilst hooning around a track? The one she described as deathly dull? The one Clarkson said his mind would buy, when his heart would buy the Alfa? Doesn't sound to be terribly driver oriented according to those guys.. I've not compared the two (hey that would be a fun weekend), but I got the definite impression they are much the same, only with a different badge..
  3. Well the valve housing itself often goes, but even that is only about £15 from Ford, and I managed to fit it myself, despite being a complete duffer.
  4. If you are referring to the crank case breather valve and hose, then yes, VW will sell you the whole thing, including the valve, the hose, and that bent piece of the induction tubing. Do yourself a favour - get down the ford garage and ask for the crank case breather hose off a Ford Galaxy VR6 - they'll sell you just the hose for a few quid, instead of the whole thing for over £100...

    A few problems.

Pair of top mounts comes to about £30 from VW, including top mount bearings.
  6. It may not surprise you to learn that I'm not a big fan of the "wheels wider than your tyres" look. I just don't get it... Each to their own, but for me the phat-est wheels I want on my VR are: 6.5Jx15, 5x100pcd, with 205/50/15 tyres. :)

    S3 or R32?

Surely the A3 Quatro S 3.2 should do everything the R32 does... http://www.audi.co.uk/newcars/features. ... dels/a3/a3 3.2 litres, 250 bhp, 4x4, plus Audi build quality. Admitted, you're unlikely to get any 12 month old cars, but still, if you're not paying!
  8. Two pumps in a single unit in the tank, have to be replaced together.. Been down that road too. Through all the problems with noisy fuel pumps I've never had rough running problems, or a lack of top-end power, so I don't really think there's a fuel pressure problem, but I'm baffled. Fortunately this one's under warranty, so I'll get them to have a look (booked it back in), but I expect them to say "not our fault - there was another problem".. (They're like that, sometimes..)
  9. Whilst driving, no noticeable noises from it when the ignition is off.

    20v turbo

I think he meant in £... not horsepower..

    ABS light arghhhhh!!

My ABS light has gone away too.. though I'm not counting any chickens yet with this damn car. (See my thread on fuel pumps.) It seems that the ABS needed an error code reset, which was done, and the ABS voltage warning never came back.. (So far.)
  12. Hi all, Joy of joys the damn VR has decided it doesn't like it's NEW fuel pump any more than the last two that were fitted... (One with 100k+ miles, one with 50k miles.) The new one has decided it's going to whine slightly at the end of my journey to work this morning. Great. At least it's under warranty, but it seems that there must be something else causing trouble. The Fuel filter has been replaced only 3k miles ago, that didn't make any difference. What's left? Fuel lines? injectors? Surely the ECU would report injector problems? Fuel rail? Again, surely the ECU would report problems with that (low pressure at injector)? Any ideas folks? Cheers, Matt.

    Sticky rear caliper

From what I've heard the Mk3s also seize, but are cheap and last longer than the mk2s. Late model Corrados already had mk3 golf calipers. Mk4 golf calipers do fit straight on the rear carrier assembly, but require conversion brake lines to be fitted, as they have a different connection. They are expensive though - but apparently are the best yet when it comes to NOT seizing (due to being alloy and not rusting).

    Sticky rear caliper

Even a slightly sticky rear caliper can cost you enough in petrol (and pads/disks) that it pays to replace it - in a few thousand miles... Best price I found was actually VW - they can supply refurbished ones. "New" price is huge - about £120 each, but refurbed is only £60 each or so.

    S3 or R32?

I should add - given the choice between current S3 and R32 I'd go for the S3. I just don't *like* the look of the Mk4 golf. I don't *like* the R32. Personal preference, but hey. The Audi arm of the company tend to make better bits of trim too.. (No replacement light switches required..)
  18. I spent some more time looking, and I think there's only a few dealers take orders via the parts club web site. Most you have to call and give them the details, some you can fax the print-out to. Ridgeway is one of the ones that's listed on the scheme but isn't shown as accepting orders any way other than in person... In future I'll be ordering from Windrush in Maidenhead, who *do* offer fax or telephone ordering based on partsclub login. Ridgeway are being extremely anal about not even offering an owner's club discount however. I'm really NOT impressed. :x

    S3 or R32?

Wait for the new R32-engined S3 next year!! Stick a turbo on the big 6-pot.. You know it makes sense..!! :) :)
  20. If I had a 340 bhp 1.8T I'd be.... ... saving up for the day the engine grandes itself and I have to replace or rebuild it..!! * *- oh and having a right old larf spinning the front wheels into oblivion all day long.
  21. Does that happen a lot in your neck of the woods, Kev?! I have to admit an ex-landlord of mine once p!ssed in a dumped car outside the house repeatedly for a few weeks until the council came to pick it up. His reasoning was that the stench would keep the kids out of it!
  22. Ridgeway Reading (though on the list above) are refusing point blank to either a) give me parts club discount or even b) give me VW CCGB discount. They deny all knowledge... How can you order parts online on partsclub? I'm sure I've missed it, but I can't see the "order now" button anywhere...
  23. It really sounds like a wheel bearing problem. Maybe it's not gone enough to introduce any play yet, but I'm sure it *will*.
  24. If your mp3 encoder supports it, definitely use VBR (variable bit rate). mp3 files can sound pretty awful, but vbr seems to allow them room to create reasonable results. Also make sure your in-car unit plays VBR files as many won't.
