You really should have it balanced, end of. The harmonic balancer will only do so much. Please make sure whoever's doing it knows what they are doing and don't put shear points in while machining. A good machinist will know what that means, the ar5e hole on ebay that does them (and not balanced either) clearly doesn't. The last thing you want is a flywheel letting go. It won't just make a mess, it could do some serious injury too!

Fairplay, thats the last thing I'd thought I'd see on the bl00dy Corrado forum, any real need apart from advertising income? You could at least change it to something with a bit of class?? Local Slags????!!!!!!

The whole reason why cars come from the factory with harmonic balancers. What the manufacturers don't tell you is that the std. OEM flywheel is SOO out of balance you wouldn't believe it. There's loads more to it than that, but as long as the factory 'lightened item' is balanced you won't have an issue, unless its too light.

Kev, in this instance I don't think it's gear noise, but either needle or input shaft bearings. From the original text I had the noise of severe enough to warrant a call saying the noise was really bad in first, then maybe a hint in second. When I built the box there was no real history, apart from there's about 100k on it. The build involved a final drive change, diff and output shaft bearing and a set of seals. Everything 'looked' ok but as you know looks can be deceiving. Even the hint of discouration could be a failing bearing, which might have slipped by. Having done a few champion ship cars and alot of track cars now running solid mounts on 02a/j/s'sI don't think it's a gear sound. What I've suggested is to change the mount over first. If its quiet, it's the mount, if not, it's the box. I've offered a full strip down to replace the bearings remaining it's just a bit of hassle taking the box out again. This is the thing with box rebuilds though. I always say I won't do partial builds for this exact reason, especially on unknown boxes. If it makes a noise afterwards it always falls back on the person who built it even when warned this can happen, without fault of the builder. This is only the 2nd time too lol, but I've always honoured my work even if the fault lies elsewhere. Can't say fairer than that :) ---------- Post added at 9:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 9:15 PM ---------- I will add my own boxwhines like a b1tch, but it is a 6spd quiafe dog box so it's allowed a little bark lol

Not identical to a quiafe, the quiafe uses dished washers and is really quite a piss poor design, but it des work. Though their after market is shit, as well as their warranty. Buy a Peloquin and you'll even save a few quid over the Quaife!

I've done loads of these for various people on the forums(here and club gti) with absolutly no downside what-so-ever! You won't feel a difference going up hills, the idle doesn't change or does the idle drop too quckly. Ever actually took a look at the mk2 flywheels? They weigh nearly half the weight of an 02a/j while still fitted to a 1.8/2 litre bottom end with absolutly no problems, even when you take a stock one down to 8lbs! Get it done, put it on and forget about it! They rev up quicker, end of. :)
-
Don't go Quaife!! beleive me you'd be better off getting a peloquin from the States. It still works out cheaper the import tax is added to the price the other end. Comes with diff bolts and bearings too.

I lighten and balance stock flywheels. I'm a machinst by trade and have sold loads of them in the past. They help the engine rev up quick, though the revs do drop quicker too in between changes. As long as their done right, you won't have a problem, and you MUST have them balanced!
-
Yup they are bonded for sure. When i had my first raddo painted I had the seals cut off and then rebonded back on to save taking the actual glass out. As for a price, may not be too expensive. I recently bought a windscreen for the one I sold. £192 including VAT without the discount, £111 including the VAT with the discount.

Good old C&R. If they told me the sky was blue I would have to check

Made one for Tubthumped on the CGTI forum for his 16v golf. I removed a fair bit of material from the right places and had it balanced up to a crank(better than balancing it up to itself if you can get your crank out) The results......a much more responsive engine, without the loss of torque that most people think. This would be ideal for use on the Corrado or mk3 16v as the flywheels on these are VERY heavy, and would probably help to reduce the amount if idle 'hold' when slowing down associtaed with these engines.

ONly paid £79.98 from VAg for a 1990 model

I got a 90mm spoiler on mine and its 1 1/4 inches off the floor running 15's. don't get me wrong it looks the mutts nuts but is really impractical( but who cares!!)

Look at Graham Vanstones car. He's running a 2 litre bottom end with a normally aspirated 20v head, modified cams, throttle bodies and managment and he's pushing out 200bhp at the WHEELS. What else can I say... Happy dubbing for him!!

Not to be funny, but having read some of the replies to other topics and questions asked, theres alot of people amongest most of the forums who shouldn't even be changing their own brake pads due to their lack of compitance. I only replied to this as I have access to the machines to do the job, and am capable to do it. Its not rocket science, and is relatively easy if your mechanically minded and know of a competent machine shop. Oh, and have a bit of cash hanging about.

Or go to Maplins and buy some heat shrink sheathing.

Bloody 'ell lads, why so optomistic? The main reason for not doing it is that you'll need new manifolds or adaptors to fit any original stuff to it, or you'll need manifolds for carbs or throttle bodies, management etc etc and you'll have to remove your pistons and machine a new slot in the top to avoid contact with the extra valve....but apart from that, then yes, they do just bolt on(with the exception of you having to plug the holes).
-
33hz, this is exactly what happened to my concept 50 i had fitted to my old golf. Weird thing was that when you disarmed the alarm and unplugged the unit, you could use the car as usual! It wasn't even immobilised. In the end I binned it, best thing for the bucket of crap! (sorry to stray off subject)

Yup mate, it'll fit although you'll have to plug up some of the oil return holes at the back of the head. This is due to the fact that the 20v head is wider than the normal ones and the oil return holes hang over the back.
