always always always, replace the tensioner on a cambelt removal/change! its so important! in and old tensioner if its put back on it is so much more likely to seize and that my friend would be a complete mess lol speak to vwspares they can get you a head gasket kit and a cambelt kit, very good prices there! gd luck
-
nice one matey thats going to certainly help the engine run a lil better lol
-
is it just me or does anything french break im doing an ABF conversion and the crank sensor is made, u guessed it! in france! and i swear its the only french part ive come across and its broken and worn i bought another 2nd hand guess what its broken! the only part VW trusted the french to make and b****ks lol i thought i managed to escape my pug 306 lol but the french keep coming back to haunt me!
-
which one lol ive got to try and remove the windscreen out of the valver! finish the ABF rebuild, put the new cam carrier stud back in! put new rubbers on my back box for my 8v (it fell off lol) sounds like a very loud tank right now! lol tunnels are great fun though hehe and possibly start the rebuild on my girling 54s depending on time

no worries yer shes going well! by the sound of it! so is that in a passat? they are nice engines most reliable 16v i reckon also witht he oil squirters helps prolong the life of the engine.
-
sounds like a possible gearlinkage problem look at the linkage just check every thing is nice and tight! you didnt have a rattely gearbox before did u?
-
dont worry we all have to start somewhere lol
-
ok look at your rocker cover you have a big square plastic box on the left hand side and between that and the oil filler cap toward the back of the rocker cover there is a cylindical object with a wire coming in from the right and breather tube going out of it from the left, and it connects to the inlet manifold! that is your ISV idle stabilisation valve!
-
they both have to come out to change the chain! lol just done mine! no split link! it wont take two long! just remove all cam carriers and mark them, take photos of where they where and then take the cams out take chain off put the engine to top dead centre 1st put new chain on then put cams in making sure the two markings meet horizontaly on the cam sprokets then put ur cam carriers on thright way lol (i did mine wrong and wondered why it wouldnt turn) torque up to 15n/m from memory oh and you will need to remove the cam pulley to remove the inlet cam so do that 1st, you might need to get somebody to help with that one, make a tool to hold the pulley whilst you undo the bolt! hope this helps a lil bit, ph and lube it all up with oil when you put it back together! and test it turns over with a spanner after!
-
yer, saying that i already have a full set of kr cam carriers which i think are the same as the ABF lol so if worst comes to worst iv got those! would you know if fitting the kr exhaust cam really helps the ABF or not ive heard of it being done but i have also herard the ABF cams are best overall!
-
hopefully all will be ok lol so did u do an ABF? or was it the 9a?
-
i think they are ok because i never torqued them down fully! and it was only on the inlet cam not the exhaust so fingers crossed lol how can i tell if i have damaged them?
-
swift kid i love you!!!!!!!!! i could have sworn i marked everything out correctly and had them the right way round! i took loads of pics as i was doing the rebuild and the initial strip down so i looked back at those and low and behold i put cam holders 1,2,3 and 4 in the right place but the wrong way round! put them the right way round and hey presto she turns :) not easily but she turns    im so happy you dont understand lol thankyou guys so much for all your help an input! i guess it will be a bit stiff untill shes actually run properly with the oil up to temp and getting right into the bearings!
-
sorry yer bad 1st post was in rush! ive taken the cams out again the only thing i can notice is that some of the hydraulic cam followers are more "spongey" than others in fact 7 of them feel spongey and 9 feel hard! is this just because the oil hasnt had time to get in them and they should all be 'hard' ? they are all new cam followers! the head is just going back together how it was the only really difference is new exhaust valve guides! and new oil seals, cam followers and thats it! oh man this is getting fustrating!
-
i just loosened the nuts still wont turn over! i then took the chain off and tried just the inlet cam still no movement! nothing at all!
-
but surely if i have the pistons in a clearence position the head should still turn over? it seams like the springs are so solid!are exhuast springs identicle to inlet springs? i was just thinking weather i could have muddled them up!
-
cam belt isnt on yet, and the pistons are well clear of the valves il try loosening the cap nuts now to see if it makes any difference! and il check the two marks on the cam sprokets.
-
hi guys right im having a lil bit of a problem at the moment i apologise in advance if i say anything stupid lol this is my 1st engine rebuild! ok so the engine has been fully rebuilt head and all! iv come to putting it back to gether all lovely! now all the cams are in and done up the right torque settings i cant move the head it wont turn over by hand or by the hex bolt on the end of the cam! ive taken it apart again poured oil every where to make sure its all lubed up but it still wont turn! what am i doing wrong it just wont budge and now to add to my plight one of the studs for the cam bearings have snapped! so how easy is it to replace these? there is a good 15mm left sticking out but only 3mm of that is threaded! please help im starting to loose faith in this project lol
-
hi there you need to get something underneath the main cross bit then slowly wedge it up if you have an extra pair of hands get somebody to use a screwdriver as well its exactly the same on my ABF but my piece is made out of plastic lol
-
