Two Quick CV Joint and Track Rod End Questions please.......
kvwloon replied to kvwloon's topic in Drivetrain
cheers chap, I'll be taking that apart again, getting quite practiced at it now - sigh! Any other takers ref. the track rod query please? :) -
OK, after much swearing, have finally fitted.....a new steering rack, subframe, wishbones, track rod ends, balljoints and an outer CV joint, but..... 1 - After fitting the new outer CV joint I noticed there was a bit of lateral play of the CV joint along the driveshaft splines. In the box the CV joint came in I noticed a small plastic bush which was the right diameter to slip on the driveshaft. Looking at a few manuals I noticed a kind of bush which looked like this part, so I fitted it between the spring clip/thrust washer and the CV joint, seemd to all fit OK, no lateral play at all (now I'm thinking maybe there is supposed to be some lateral CV joint movement along the driveshaft to account for up/down movement of the wishbone?). When offering up the wishbone/baljoint up to the brake swivel, it was quite hard to get it all lined up. Managed it in the end, but was I right to fit this plastic bush? 2 - When fitting the new track rod ends to the new rack I took the measurements from the old unit and set up the new rack/rods to the same, but the wheel are obviously way out of track, anyone know the right dimensions to set them up to please, at the moment both wheel are toeing out very noticeably. Thanks in advance for any help, want to get the old gal back on the road, it's been a while.

The Nugget - what to do with it if I go to Dubai
kvwloon replied to Andy665's topic in General Car Chat
Trust me, non air-conditioned 'rado in Middle East, totally 100% forget it! Couple that with the standard of driving out there, doubly forget it. Got to be 3 or 4 only. -
What VW's have you owned and how old are you??
kvwloon replied to bigben's topic in General Car Chat
Well, first VW was a Mk2 Golf, which I then sold to get my all time fave car, the Corrado, and that was eight years ago. Right now, I've got a '59 splitty panel van and a '72 Bay, and of course, the Corrado still! -
I'm selling 5 , 4 with good to excellent tyres in fair to good condition, I'm reckoning on around £120, that's with centre caps (which are getting very hard to find).

...just when you thought this thread had REALLY died. ..ain't life strange, been on the lookout for a decent set of Estorils for ages. Driving through a quiet Norfolk village last week, and amongst other odds and sods for sale outside someones house was a set of wheels. Didn't think too much about it on way past, as in a hurry, just though 'might be nice wheels those'. On the way back took a closer look, and bugger me if they weren't a set of Estorils for £80! Needless to say, I bought them, and am a happy man. :)

^^^^ what he said! ^^^^^

Can I just jump in and say the below again, because bugger me if just weeks after sorting the lower pipe the top one gave up the ghost this week too, just got in from fixing it, luckily had a spare pipe to hand! Next time you go under your C, check and rustproof the short pipes that start with two 'banjo' type connections just below the rubber gaitor where the rack joins the bottom of the steering wheel shaft. The pipes run from there down and across and back in to the rack. The banjo connections on mine were corroded to buggery, result this weekend (again) was a small pin prick hole spraying fluid on to the exhaust heat shield = lots of worrying smoke from under bonnet and loss of steering oil/steering. Waxoyl them if there in good nick, otherwise source some good second hand ones, otherwise it'll be a new rack, all for the sake of two small pipes and a bit of corrosion!
-
Must be around 8 or 9 years now, second owner from new!
-
Yeah, it's got to move, it's a trade mark of the Corrado.
-
Bit late on to this thread, but hell yeah, MUCH better with the weight fitted. Easy mod.

Driveshaft outer end connection to CV joint advice please...
kvwloon replied to kvwloon's topic in Drivetrain
Cheers all, there's always something isn't there!  -
...OK , feel a bit of an idiot, but the story is....C failed MOT last week due to a worn ball joint. So I replaced them both yesterday, no great problem.....until I tried driving to MOT tester today, and didn't get there! Went on to full lock in a car park, and lost all drive! Looking under car and removing the outer CV joint gaitor, the splined end of the driveshaft where it slots in to the outer CV joint had come adrift from the CV joint and was just hanging there loose! History is, when I was doing the ball joints, after undoing the three bolts for the balljoint base, and then the upper bolt at the ball joint, I found I could swivel the lower caliper assy to one side for better access, but when this happended the splined end of the driveshaft would also come adrift easily. Thought a bit odd, but when I put it all back together I guided the splined end of the driveshaft back in to the CV joint, and it all seemed OK. Driving to MOT station I noticed the steering wheel was not centred anymore, so pulled in to car park (luckily) to take a look at why, and that's when I lost all drive, for the reason above. I see there is a circlip on the end of the driveshaft splined portion, should this locate in to the CV joint? If so, presumably I'm going to have to take the whole thing off to do it? Any help and words of sympathy would be appreciated. All my friend could say was 'why don't you get rid of all your old VW's and get one modern car instead!' '90/'91 16v by the way, and thanks in advance for any help.

f#ck me, and I was p'ssed off because MOT'er scratched through my rust protection on the brake pipes last weekend! Hope it get's sorted for you.
-
Can I just jump in and say - CHECK THE PIPES ON YOUR RACK FOR CORROSION! After my recent experiences of corroded to buggery pipes (on the rack itself) which resulted in me losing all the fluid very quickly, I would highly recommend Waxoyl coating them.
-
Can I just add a quick question to this on an early 16V. If replacing the top strut mounts will I need to use spring compressors, or will the springs be fully extended on removal?
-
Not fair! get caught doing 34 and you get busted!

fair enough I reckon! -
Power steering rack - quick job could save future trouble...
kvwloon replied to kvwloon's topic in Drivetrain
^^^^^^ doh! sorry, and thanks! -
...just a thought. After weeks of doing nothing to get my C back on the road and fixing power steering rack, finally got under her on Saturday....and found that the rack appears fine, but one of the metal pipes was corroded to buggery, leaking fluid. The new old rack I had got to fit also has a pin prick through corrosion, same pipe, same place! These cars aren't getting any younger, so as soon as weather gets better, I would advise getting under your C and putting some grease or Waxoyl over the metal pipes on the rack!
-
Cheers, can't hurt to find out, but as you say doubt it will be any cheaper. Think I might have a secondhand spare rack if I can find it. Just need to get the time / energy to crack on with it.
-
Cheers all, suppose I was being a tad naive, just fed up of not using her! Will ditch that particular 'brainwave'! Bloody bloody bloody SNOW, pain in the arse!
-
...because I still haven't got off my fat arse and sorted out replacing my duff power steering rack, anyone know how easy it is to rig up the KR engine so everything runs except the power steering pump. Shorter pulley belt? I know it's going to be heavy on the arms, but at least she'll be mobile again! Curse this damn weather and dark nights! :? Ta muchly.
