My initial instinct was it was coming from the gearbox, with the wing off I can reach through and touch the gearbox end plate without getting under the car, and you can feel the rattle (appreciate that it will travel pretty far through metal regardless) Chains did cross my mind, but the noise completely disappears when the clutch is pressed, and returns as soon as I lift it. The tensioners and chains were replaced about 50k ago, also had it open about 2k miles ago to install the original cams, primed the tensioner bolt correctly and car ran fine afterwards.

Here's a new one... Tried to start the car after a few months, it fired up and died... argh... the dreaded immobiliser! I took the connectors out of the box under the dash, cleaned them up, reinserted them... no difference. I got it onto Vagcom, and got the fault code 'Low Key Signal'. I tried the spare key, and it fired up first time... Are the keys actively powered? If not, why has the main key suddenly stopped working?

Started the car this weekend after the first time in a few months. The idle was rough and the car was a bit shaky once the revs dropped, but the biggest worry was when this happened, there was an occasional clattering noise coming from the gearbox. The noise seemed to go away when I raised the revs (or perhaps I couldn't hear it?), and also disappeared when I dipped the clutch, so it's definitely gearbox related. Car is SORN and in pieces (interior, wings and bumpers have been removed as it's going to the bodyshop for new sills next month), so I can't drive it other than a little bit in first and reverse. The noise sounds maybe like a marble shaking in there when the whole car shudders. I sense a big bill coming. Any ideas?

Ominous rattling sound from mine at idle, goes away when I engage the clutch or rev it. Anyone got a spare box?

Sills were sourced by Mount Panels in Leeds, website is here: http://www.mountpanels.com/

Saw these, luckily the inner sills and floor are factory fresh, just need the outer sills doing

Germany, he knew a 'guy' who can source panels, said they were the last two available from the supplier. Doesn't mean more don't exist though! They've arrived today, just need to get it booked in now!

£600 including the new sills. Might go up a bit as I find other patches as I pull back the carpets!

After the MOT failure in 2017, the car's been stood on the drive. I did consider welding myself and then decided against it. Then I was kind of paralysed by the fear of what it would cost to get the underside of the car sorted by a professional. I don't know what changed this month, but I decided to take action and get a quote for the welding to the sills and arches. I got a quote from a recommended guy that was a lot lower than I had feared, and he also managed to locate two new sills from Germany which he'll swap in. The car should be ready to go into the workshop in a couple of weeks' time - I'm now in the process of removing the carpets, interior and some of the body panels to help with the prep. The guy is doing a mini-restoration to the underside, so it will come back after all fixed up and protected. It's just the start of the journey. The car will still need paint over the repairs when it comes back, and then a couple of mechanical repairs for the MOT, but it's exciting to see that there's a way ahead now. I'm thinking of doing the spraying myself - I have a compressor that came with a paint gun, and I'm looking into options for a temporary spray booth (closed side gazebos). I've had decent results when painting before when I haven't rushed and made sure I followed the process carefully, so I'm feeling fairly confident. This is only until I get a full respray, but that's a bit further down the road.

I need to do quite a bit if rust repair on the car. I'm looking to weld myself, but will need replacement panel cuts for the hits that need welding. I know that some may be available through classic parts, but I'd like to see what's out there first The bits I need (rust free) are: Nsf outer sill - front edge to 6 inches back Nsf inner sill at front, about 8 inches back, and extending into jacking point area (prob about 6-8 inches square in total) Nsr inner sill, this is the bit from the bottom of the car into the wheel arch Offside front inner sill, behind the front wing Rear apron including area around the badge and under the rear bumper Offside rear side panel, below the bump strip, to the top of the outer sill (Inc part of outer sill). Will post pics of specifics if anyone thinks they can help, let me know if you have anything, cheers Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

Thanks for the advice, I'm up for getting stuck into it... I haven't welded before but every day is a school day... Looking forward to getting it fixed up, not got masses of time, but no pressure to get it done quickly. Shame it will be off the road for a hit, at least it's the right time of year to be doing work on it Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

Failed today on a couple of fixable mechanical bits, but also: Corrosion (5p hole) in nearside front outer sill Corrosion (looks nasty, spread from jacking point) in nearside front inner sill Corrosion in nearside rear sill (started on the arch lip, a bit of a gaping hole there now) They missed a couple of bits on the offside sill too, front and rear of the sill. I've had the car 7 amazing years, 250k on the clock, but still runs well, just got all the suspension joints replaced, newish brakes, good tyres, so drives pretty sweet. Just spent loads of time getting the sunroof working! It's a classic green vr6, beige leather, solitudes but is starting to look tired with odd scabs appearing. Front wings are shot. Long term plan was always take it off the road, fix a couple of bits of corrosion, then respiratory, but the corrosion is a lot worse than I thought it would be. Heart says fix, head says it's too much to take on so cut losses and break, not sure what to do... Any thoughts? Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

Mk3 sunroof and other sunroof repair observations
tony_ack replied to andrewchapple's topic in Exterior
I'm rebuilding my roof at the moment, and have collected quite a few mechs. Every single Corrado roof I've come across has the same issue with one of the guides on the slider of the near side locking segment being broken, even when the cable itself hasn't yet sheared - and it is usually the same guide that has broken off. I got hold of a glass roof out of a late MK3 Golf VR6. The nearside locking segment slider on that has all the guides intact. Interestingly, the slider itself is exactly the same part number as the one in the Corrado (not the 1H0 number of the repair kit), and aside from the (removable) locking segment being black instead of chrome, looked identical to the Corrado one. The 1H0 repair kit looks slightly different - the same shape, but the guides look to be a different colour/material. So if the sliders are the same, it would suggest that the MK3 Golf roof is less prone to breaking them - either due to the design of the MK3 Golf roof putting them under less stress, or possibly because the car had aircon (the roof doesn't get used as often?). It also suggests that the MK3 Golf slider, in the Corrado roof, may suffer the same fate eventually. Also note the 1H0 replacement slider is still available on factory order from VW, with an £80 price tag and 6 week waiting time. I'd be interested in understanding what causes the slider guide to shear in the first place, in apparently the same place each time - is it just bad maintenance, or is there something else in the mech that weakens first? Another interesting observation is that in every Corrado roof I've dismantled, one of the plastic feet guides on the forward slider is always slightly broken on the driver's side - I wonder if this is a factor too? -
Hi mate I'll take it if you've still got it, where in Yorks are you? Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

Over 4 years since the last post! She still exists. The Schrick and cams made way for standard to make a bit of money back BBS RCs made way for Solitudes Bodywork is looking a little worse for wear, but running fairly well. I replaced the ball joints, rear wishbone bushes and top mounts - it now handles better than it's ever done Had a split downpipe, failed rear wheel bearing and failed front wheel bearing all leading to lengthy stays on the drive, but back on the road now. Sunroof is bust I never did get round to installing the aircon A never-ending list of jobs to do on it I STILL haven't found the squeak at the rear...

Thought you needed a 4 pin brown sensor for aircon instead of the 2 pin black one? Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

Hi there, I know the vr6 exhaust is 2.25", but is that the outside or inside diameter? My exhaust has been cut near the back box, presumably to get it over the axle, and the sleeve over the cut has rotted away to nothing, so I need to replace it Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

Bump, still looking Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

Cheers mate, managed to find it and messaged buy the guy doesn't know if it's intact or not, so still looking Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

Cheers, any idea which site? Looked at the corrado forum page and ccgb, but didn't see anything (though I haven't used Facebook in years so I might have missed it) Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

After watching several working sunroofs/intact mechanisms pass by in the for sale section in the past month, mine decided to snap last night! Has anyone got an intact set of cable guides (need the left, but could do with the right hand one as well), or a whole working sunroof mechanism? I don't mind cleaning it up/regreasing etc as long as the cable guides are intact. Thanks everyone

Tempted, but struggling to get time at the moment, the main thing I need at the moment is the plastic guide at the front of the runner, which runs over the deflector arms, will try to get a pic... If you have one of those, it would be a big help
