Also see the aux water pump... which would make it a VR. And the location of the ISV at the back of the manifold.

I have a strong dislike for Toyo Proxes - no doubt they're a good price, and work great in the dry... but their wet weather performance borders on dangerous. My go to tyre for the Corrado is the Uniroyal Rainsport 3's. Great all rounder in all aspects and fairly priced.

I think that's a bit optimistic!

Air conditioning and Recaro's! Very nice!

Judging by whats written on the side of the minibuses, I'd say that was a good guess!

Welcome :) Looks lovely! Never get bored of seeing the little 'supercharged' badge alongside the G60 badge.. so cool :)

Bad day with cam install... think I found the reason.... FIXED & RUNNING.
Jim replied to Jim's topic in Engine Bay
Not since the cams were reinstalled, but we did turn it over by hand to check / reset the timing, prior to reinstalling them. I will wait till I've reinstalled the top plate and put the chain tensioner bolt back in before I try turning it over by hand again. -

Pleased to report that Jon from Stealth Racing popped over earlier and kindly double checked the timing and reinstalled the cams for me - no breakages this time! So that's that worry off my mind. Going to order a few more nuts and bolts ordered and some RTV sealant for the upper plate, and can hopefully think about rebuilding the rest of it in the next week or so. -

If I was starting over Kev, I think I would go that route - plenty of low mileage MK3 VR's out there to cannibalise. But I'm becoming more and more determined to keep a pretty original Corrado on the road even if it does mean it has it's foibles and weaknesses in terms of the engine management. Will see how it goes with this motor though longer term. -

No kidding. The last 48 months, I've been through a fair amount with this car, financially and emotionally! It leaves me in a dilemma of "sell it because it's been such a pain in the ass" but similarly with so much invested in it financially & emotionally, it's kinda hard to even consider letting it go. And anyone who owns these cars knows, the day when the weather is great and you're warbling along with the VR on song, often makes up for all the heartache! -
Standard Quantum Synta (what used to be called Synta Silver) is fine for the G60 and not too expensive - about £20 for 5l from the VW dealership.

The 10w50 Pro Race S stuff does an amazing job of quietening down a slightly noisy VR. Just wish it wasn't quite so pricey!

LOL. Probably best to stay well away from those folks then cause they're talking nonsense. I, like a hell of a lot of people on here, have had a different map put on their Corrado's, so I can quite happily tell you they can be remapped.

Cheers guys. Will leave it alone for now then and just look to rebuild! -

Thing is the engine was fully rebuilt a little over a year ago... reason I tore it down to replace the tappets is because they had gotten really noisy (and can see they were replaced) and I am pretty sure the valve stem seals were done at the time. The situation with the split in the head gasket is confusing though. -

Got a follow up question actually. Knowing the engine is as stripped down as it currently is (upper & lower inlet manifold off, cams out) am I naive in thinking it's not much more of a stretch to have the head off the car? Reason I ask is we found that the head gasket has actually split just in the area under the cover plate, towards the rear underneath where the tensioner bolt is. I've been advised this isn't really a problem in the same way as it would be if it were actually in the bit where the cylinder head is tightened down and that when the end plate is resealed it should be fine. But it's gnawing away at me a bit and I'm wondering if it's pretty much just a case of removing the exhaust manifold bolts and head studs and swapping over the head gasket to get that replaced? Obviously I'd need to buy new head bolts and the head gasket too... -
Precisely. "We own the design / authority on producing these, but because we don't give a crap about the VW Corrado, you guys have no chance of ever seeing them again." I guess we could ask Anna from VW Heritage whether she is able to contact Classic Parts in Germany as they may have the sway to help make it happen?

Despite the Rallye engine, that's quite a lot of money for a MK2 Scirocco!

Moved this to group buy feelers :)

We double checked timing mate and are pretty sure the engine was at TDC - we checked for the alignment with the arrow on the clutch plate? Will be checking that prior to reinstalling it all though. -

I'd really hope for more... sure we can get over 50! I'm going to stick a mention of it in the forthcoming Sprinter magazine to try and get more interest. Don't turn up in your MK1 Scirocco!!! :) -

Well Dave - I think your suggestion of a 'stiff' tappet might be right on the money. I've just gone out to the garage to have another look. The cam we'd attempted to tighten down was the exhaust cam and had broken on the cap which sits between cylinders 1 & 3, suggesting that there was too much resistance from one of the tappets on cylinder one. I popped them both out. The right hand one was nice and springy and easy to push in and out. However the left hand one was rock solid. Pushing it in place in top of the valve there was absolutely no movement. I pulled it out and put it into a G-clamp, I had to twist using some ridiculous amount of force before it began to move, and then was nice and springy like the other one. Putting it back in place I could now push down on it in place. I think we may well have found the culprit. Wish I'd known about checking the tappets prior to fitting them!! I guess once the lower inlet manifold comes back from media blasting next week I think I can move and get it put back together..
