Been offered a personalised plate as a gift and considering it. Never been a fan but think they work on an older car. My dad has t9 moc (moc being his initials) on his Porsche (his new toy) and he said he will get me one to go on mine. I've looked at all the £250 options an think I've found a cracker. I can get VR06 JOC (obviously vr6 and my initials). I could have my postcode and initials but it makes the car look older and I think vr06 is better. What do people think? Should I go for it or not? How much do people pay for getting plates made nowadays...will just get plastic ones.

The "what I did to my Corrado today" thread...
joeyboswell replied to Jim's topic in General Car Chat
Yesterday had cat heat shield welded a bit to stop the annoying rattle and a rear washer replaced to the rear heat shield. Oil changed to 5w-40 synth and gearbox oil changed to mt90. Can't believe how good that stuff is! Windscreen seal loose around the top so need to sort that. Scraps of old sealant and rubber stop it going back in so gonna have to scrape it out (watching the paintwork) an pop a new one in. -
Turns out my noise was the cat heat shield being loose and a washer missing on the rear heat shield. All sorted now.

Cat heat shield welded on today to fix annoying rattle, washer replaced on back heat shield and engine oil changed to 5w-40 synth with new oil filter. Also changed the gearbox oil to mt90. That's some good gear that! Gearchange is as smooth as silk now! Full tank of premium and ready for the weekend! Even though I have been made redundant today!

Are rear brake disc shields/back plates essential?
joeyboswell replied to Andy T's topic in Drivetrain
I've just changed all the front suspension and found that the splash shields were falling apart so removed them. You have to remove the disc to get to the screws, you might need grips to get the rusty hex-head screws out. I bought a new pair from VW, about £8 each but when I got them home I found they don't fit - they only have two mounting holes instead of three and one of them doesn't line up. Guess they've replaced the corrado part with an item off a newer model, gonna take them back tomorrow and see what they say. Let us know what they say then please mate. If the discs and that have to come off I may aswell ride it out until I need new discs or wait until I upgrade or something. Keep the labour costs down as I'm giving up touching anything mechanical now! No space, tools or time or so my garage is gonna do alright out of me I suppose. -
Are rear brake disc shields/back plates essential?
joeyboswell replied to Andy T's topic in Drivetrain
are the front ones essential too? One of mine is looking like it's on its back legs. Are the front ones easy to fit or are they a ballache like the rear ones? Do any others fit? Seen a few different shape ones described as corrado ones. I need for a VR6 if that makes any difference. Anywhere good to get them cheap or are the stealers the best bet? -
FREE SHIPPING at Opie Oils ends 4th May 2010
joeyboswell replied to oilman's topic in Suppliers Forum
It's OK mate. I used the forum discount and the oil was reduced anyway. Cheers for the offer though! Got an email saying it has been shipped and needed the priority shipping anyway. -
I'm back to thinking it is one of the heat shields (cat or above rear exhaust) or the exhaust touching something. Need to stop being lazy and have a look but it's hard without proper jacks and stands. Fingers crossed it is just one of them rattling.

FREE SHIPPING at Opie Oils ends 4th May 2010

typical! just ordered 80 odd quid worth of stuff from you yesterday! -
This is about the most similar to my problem at the minute except I have just had a Jetex cat-back exhaust fitted and obviously kept the cat. It is only at certain points through the rev-scale but it sounds like an empty aerosol as described here. I'm hoping it is just the heatshield on the exhaust or the under-shield on the cat. If not what could it be? Could it be something to do with the new exhaust? I mean the actual exhaust and air running through it's pipes or does this only apply to maifolds and de-cats?

very nice. looks like mine! jealous of our low mileage though. good luck with the new beast!

the car got the full autoglym treatment today. A good few hours cos it was rotten but done as much as my patience could stand! Gave it a shampoo, polish, resin layer, alloy clean, plastic blacking and rainX on the windows. Good to have a good look at the paintwork and fully see what kind of state it is in. Quite pleased with it and glad to see the paintwork is in really good nick. Plenty of life in it without a respray if I carry on looking after it.

alright wy906. sounds like you are on the same wavelength as me...ice grey, standard and high oil temps! I hope I can help you in saying not to worry about them temps too much. I have fretted on this forum over mine and the general view is to chill (no pun) and just have it looked at in the garage. I am running exactly the same temps (116 is only reached when giving it beans for a prolonged time) and have decided to just get the whole thermo and sensor system replaced. I've been quoted about £110 for parts (everything including bolts and housings as they are prone to snap) and about £90 for labour. Any parts not used will be sent back to the dealers and knocked off the price but I'm happy with it all being used if I can lower the temps. Only other advice I've got really is to replace the oil often with good stuff, the coolant and just keep an eye on it. If this doesn't work you may have another more serious problem which will need fixing. A good garage will know more. Anyway...welcome to the club anyway! I'm gonna be moving down to London this year so will give you a beep if I see ya!

I'm getting on it abdul! Hopefully tomorrow. I see pics of other ice greys and it is a lovely colour. I see you have one too then?! I've got all the Auto Glym shampoo, polish and resin but just no drive with a hose so I'm gonna take someones over drive tomorrow and get cracking. Got all the rainX gear too to whack on. I've not got any plans for her really cos I like the unmolested look. The exhaust is as far as I'm going in the performance / looks department until I'm sure I have got everything as mechanically sound as possible. Then I will maybe: _lower her a bit (but I live around a lot of speed bumps and cant be arsed with crawling) _upgrade the wipers _get wheels reconditioned and thinking about a darker metallic grey but not sure (will get on photoshop before I do) _furniture clinic job on the two front seats and steering wheel (to get them looking newer) after that I will consider sensible mods but want the OEM look really. I really admire some of the work on here but I haven't got the space, time, money or know-how to be doing all that and it is a daily driver so the less time off the road the better.

Took advantage of the nice evening weather we had here and decided I would clean the roof lining. It had a few oily marks on it around the sunroof and that is all I thought needed cleaning. I was just using some Simoniz upholstery cleaner which came part of a cheap pack from costco (upholstery cleaner, tyre blacker, plastic blacker and dash cleaner) for about a tenner so didn't expect much. Started scrubbing the horrible black marks and realised that my roof was actually a really light grey! Anyway all of the oily black marks came out as well as my ceiling getting a new bright colour. I haven't used any of the other stuff in the pack but hopefully it will be as good as the upholstery cleaner. Got no pictures of the before but believe me the black marks looked terrible. Anyway here's some progress shots from my phone and a quick finished snap to show the colour.

After 7 weeks of corrado ownership (and countless whinging posts on here) I thought it was time to get my own section on the go. In the time I have had the car I haven't even been able to give it a proper wash, polish and wax so proper pics will follow when I get that done. background on the car: 1994 VR6 Ice Grey 138,000 when bought and 3 previous owners (all for about 5 years each) full heated black leather (in decent nick) 18 stamps in the service book and a wallet full of receipts no mods other than a nice sony headunit and uprated leads (and probably sparks) only got a crap iphone pic from the time I bought it: since owning: Drove back from Bath were I bought it to Liverpool with a big grin on my face and no issues. Half a mile from my house I get a whining sound, loss of power steering and me in the shittest mood ever. :mad2: Limp home with allsorts running through my head about buying a dud so storm in the house and decide to sleep on it and deal with it in the morning. Next morning, start the car to hear noise is worse and little puff of smoke come from the engine bay. After storming back in the house after having a look at the car, I come hear to find out it is only the belt and tensioner pulley. Ordered them (genuine VW for £100 for both) and fitted them myself with some very useful info from the lads on here. Here's some pics of the state of the pulley (no plastic) and the chewed up belt! This job worked out fine but decided to take it to a garage for a full check-up and get whatever needs doing. This was due to having to do a big drive and wanting it to be as good as for the journey. Wanted them to sort the high oil temps but will do that next time by replacing the whole system (sensors, thermo etc). Heres what I got done anyway: _rear shocks and bump stops _near side inner CV boot _oil cooler seals _both wishbone bushes front (required new bolts being welded in too) _top mount _cat-back jetex exhaust The exhaust was £350 and all of the above work (parts, labour, fitting the exhaust and topping up oils and fluids) came to just over £600. To be honest there isn't much difference from going in the garage to going out with this work but it definitely feels firmer and less noisy. Didn't get the temps sorted or a funny noise on reversing (thinking it is a wheel bearing now for some reason) but these will be next. Here's some other poor pictures I have but will defo follow up with some better ones after it gets it well-deserved bath! http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/47/2404201002.jpg

good to see a scouse sympathiser out there! I'm a long time supporter of rafa but I'm starting to lose my rag with him. We'll see what happens if we get new owners anyway. I'm starting to think the noise may not be the exhaust and something more sinister like tappets or chains. Starting to regret buying the car now!

yes I do get a blast of hot air air when I open the bonnet. I do get a bit of a smell sometimes but I'm no expert and could be normal. water temps are normal (80-90). I will get the coolant system flushed and refill as you suggest...along with the engine oil (5w/40 synth). I'm just pissed off that I asked the garage to check all the sensors, temps and hook it up to vagcom but I'm none the wiser if they did or not. I know he took it on test drive or 2 and looked at the temps. I was in a mad rush to get it back cos they took longer than they said so I literally just payed and left! it was already passed their shutting time and I had a big drive to London straight after. Bit weird that the temps have jumped up since I had new seals on the oil cooler. Will have to get it the vagcom on the go whilst driving.

i'm thinking of this: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-984-fuchs-titan-supersyn-5w-40-high-performance-fully-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx

oilman...need some help! tell me what to buy from your site! Corrado VR6 1994 (139,000 miles) no mods (other than exhaust) normal-fast road use normal oil temps = 100-116 (haven't had a hot, traffic journey yet so expect this to be higher) after some engine oil and anything you can suggest that may lower oil temps in any way or help engine to cope with them. don't want the cheapest but not the most expensive either. always happy with a deal! cheers
-
Nice one for the slap in the face...will get a grip of myself now! It's just that it is higher since it went in the garage which confuses me. Just edited a post were I said I was getting up to 106...it was actually meant to read 116 since it was in the garage! I will give it an oil change and chill until I can get the thermostat etc sorted. I wasn't thinking of getting an upgraded oil cooler or anything like that. I'm happy to keep it standard but working as VW intended. I will hopefully leave this thread alone now...and hopefully oil temp won't go up any more! nice one lads!
-
ay less of that craigwol! not being fussy...there is definitely a tinny sound which I suppose I will have to go back to the garage with. Just what I needed! It is only at certain parts in the rev range and at certain times...hard to explain. It must be when a certain vibration is reached.
-
fitted on Friday. 400 miles done over weekend and more than happy with the noise and look of the 3 box jetex. Near enough OEM but with a bit more grunt and pops on overrun. Was knackered driving home last night but think I heard a bit of a tinny noise which wasn't there so will have a look / listen later. Only at certain revs and potentially could be it slightly tapping something. Any ideas? Nothing can go simple for me I suppose!
-
it is annoying! bloody annoying! I'm pretty laid back but thought I would try to look after my new car, stay on top of things and hopefully save myself money by stopping things going drastically wrong! This thing though doesn't seem that simple. Would changing the a different oil help the temps at all? It's still got what the previous owner was running as it had a service before I bought it. Would a thicker, synth oil work reduce temps in any way or just be able to cope with them better? Suppose I best get a oil, coolant and general fluids change and see what happens. cheers for the help anyway lads.

Vr6's come with an oil cooler standard mate its just a very small one on the front of block Temps seem high mate whats it like when your not thrashing it though ?? well before it went in the garage I was getting 90-104 (up to 104 when giving it some beans!). Literally straight after picking it up I was getting higher temps like 98-102 with normal driving and about 112-114 (occassional 116) at high motorway speeds. Normal driving is nothing too bad...high but not excessive (from what I have read on here). Just rang the garage and they said that nothing they have done should have caused me to get higher oil temps and that I need a new thermostat (and therefore housing!). I don't want to just replace that and then it not be solved. I just searched and G-lad done all of this to get the right temps: "check the heat of the radiator in all 4 corners after the drive (ie once the thermostat has opened). i replaced my thermostat and houseing twice, and all the sensors (3 in housing, 1 in rad) AND the fan control box AND the coolant-to-oil heat exchanger AND the electric water pump AND the main water pump before the car would run at the right temp" I don't have a problem with the water temps but the oil is a worry. Will the thermostat affect the oil temp much do you think?
