  1. Just recently had a chat with a local BMW specialist, (but with 30 years VW main dealer experience), with regards to engine oils. This came about from a major mayonaise problem on my 8v Gti, and he said that Castrol and Comma oils are pretty poor at combating it, due to lack of/wrong type of additives/detergents in the oil. His personal opinion was that Duckhams and Shell are good if your car suffers from this. He remained strangely non comital on the Quantum oils though??
  2. Two white knuckles and a f@ck seems to be the torque setting used by most mechanics!!
  3. Excellent work Phat VR6. Replaced my bearing last week, and no probs since. Great service by BG Bearing in Loughborough, if anyone is nearby. Oh, and the guy in thee local motor factors mentioned that these bearings are fitted to Honda m/c's, so a trip to a bike shop may be a good port of call if you can't get hold of one.
  4. VR6-er - I've just noticed your thread addressed to me. Thanks very much for the concern. I'm afraid I've not read through this item for some time, as it was getting a bit techy for me! I'll read it all through from the start and get back to you all. :D Oh, and i'm on broadband.

    Over Heating

About £20 IIRC for the housing. And you might as well fit new seals, just to be sure.
  6. Aposegil wrote; ull find out that anyone under the age of 25 can not be insured as a 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc drive on a car where the main named driver is over 25. Its basically to stp all the young people getting cheap insurance on their powerfull car Sorry mate, don't agree. i'm 26, the g/f is 23, and Elephant even asked if I wanted her on the policy as 2nd driver for £5 extra? This is on a VR6 btw.

    Insurance!!!

Hello mate, give Elephant.co.uk a try. Saved me £100, and even stuck our Gert on the policy for an extra fiver!

    empty expansion tank

Not always the case. My aux pump and thermostat housing both had tiny leaks, but the heat of the engine evaporated the coolant before I could trace a leak.

    Wheel Spinning

I'm 'just' a tyre kicker too, so don't know too much about the rosters etc, but i'd say 90% of the crew would sooner be else where from the chats i've had with them! From my experience, the companies grown too big, too soon and there is no-one from the top down with much idea of how to run it. Every shift I find myself doing every job under the sun, bar the one I'm paid for just because the head honcho's couldn't organise the preverbial pi55 up/brewery. Oh but hang on, i've just realised, thats most airlines isn't it!! Any way, rant over, sorry if thats not been of much use, but i do feel better for it!!!

    Exhaust hanger!

So that was for center and back boxes? And was it a genuine article? If it was I may be tempted, cos it's still the original and it's been on 10 years.

    Please Help

The thermostat housing is plastic, and gets brittle with heat and age. To get to it, take the plastic engine cover off, remove the coilpack, and the three coolant pipes. Once all these are off, it should become clear. It's held on with 3 allen key bolts. And I think the housing is about £22 from VW. Good Luck!

    Exhaust hanger!

Thanks Kev, advice noted!! As for the VAG-COM, cheers for the offer, but your a fair way away. If Leicester get relegated, and the're playing the 'swich, i'll let you know! And Roddy, I'm saving all my money for an insurance renewal, the robbing ba5tards. All I can say is thank god for the xmas bonus!

    Exhaust hanger!

The hanger has snapped on my VR's exhaust, on the pipe going into the centre section: (See Pic) Would it be possible to weld back, or am I looking at a new centre section? 2ndly, A wishbone rear bush has started to split. Is it worth the upgrade to poly bushes?? And last of all, does anyone know where I can get the car hooked up to VAG-COM in the East Midlands? Thanks in advance, Stu :D

    What tyres?

Are 205/50/15's the correct size for Vr6 Speedlines, or are 195's compatable? It's just that Costco sell the 195's for £44 ish fitted, but the 205's are £68 ish fitted. (These are for Michelin Pilot Exaltos btw.) Can't quite figure the large diff in price!!
  17. Thanks for the help fellas. I'll await some further info!!
  18. Thanks LHD-G60. Supercharged said to copy the 1st URL and browse the whole manual from the front page. This means nothing to me, i'm sorry to say. As it stands, the Bentley manual will open in the Opera browser, and the menus appear, but nothing opens up. Please could you explain this to me s l o w l y, as computers ain't my forte!!
  19. When I said earlier, that I must learn to use my computer, - I meant it. PLEASE explain to a computer muppet, how to get this working, in simple terms!!! What am I supposed to copy, and to where and when?? Excuse me for looking thick, but I really am a computer beginer!
  20. just a thought, but has someone previosly stuck new glass on top of old , maybe smashed, glass. therefore the heat isn't transferring?
  21. I don't get it? when the bentley manual is opened in opera, the menu's still show, but i can't get the final pages. I really must learn how to use this computer!!
  22. Thanks very much fella's. Looks like it's not just me then!
  23. I purchased a copy of a Bentley Corrado manual some time ago, and have only just got around to installing it. The program loads ok, shows menus etc, but doesn't show diagrams/write ups. When you click on an item, another window opens, but is blank?? Just wondering if anyone has had similar probs? Oh, and i'm running XP. Cheers in advance... :) **mod edit** thread title altered & moved to "problems" section - stevemac

    Coolant Leak

I had to replace the thermostat housing due to a crack, where it mates with the block. With it being a thermoset plastic, the age and heat cause it to disintegrate. The whole job was less then £30 with a complete set of new seals. by removing the relevant coolant pipes, the job is fairly straight forward, and can be done in half an hour. :)
  25. 6.5 with no traction til 3rd
