Does a mk3 golf sunroof fit a corrado?...

Does anyone know, its just I'm breaking a mk3 golf at the moment and it has a electric glass tilt and slide sunroof which would be a cool upgrade for the corrado project imo.... Would let a bit of light inside the car...

Well, the bolt-holes all line up, and the aperture is the same size/shape, but the glass panel has a different profile.

so are you saying Mike that if you used the mech and then atrtached your corrado's sunroof panel it would work.

Well, you could certainly fit the mechanism to the roof and the panel to the mechanism, but I'm not sure it'd line up without going out to the garage with a tape measure.

Dont get a MK3 one ben I got facked by some prick selling one at E38 advertised for a corrado. we took the panel out & later dave & I checked parts no's to revel its a MK3 gold roof.. they dont fit!!!

As Mike said Bally, the mechanism may fit, and the motor from the C fitted the mk3 mechanism fine, but the panel itself was definitely a no-no, bulged up way too much,

Whilst trauling round my breakers a while ago, I noticed the Passat estate has the flattest profile glass roof, and yep, the MK3 one would stick out like a sore thumb in a Corrado......

 

Speaking of sunroof stuff. I ordered all of the mechanicals bar the subframe itself and they are shockingly expensive! I'll be putting them all into a spare subframe and doing a repair guide for Dinkus' 'how to' site.

 

The whole sunroof less panel and motor is £495+VAT :shock:

 

All of the sliding and tilting bits come to about £250.

It's got to be worth just fitting a second hand one when your looking at £25

Not to mention having better things to do than taking a VW sunroof mechanism apart and then assembling it again :)

Well for starters a second hand one is just going to be a bit less broken than the one you have now. Rebuilding the sunroof (out of the car!) and just swapping them over is only a bit more effort and will fix the problem for another 10yrs or so.

 

I don't know about you, but if I'm gonna go through the hassle of swapping over the sunroof, I only want to do it once.

 

£250 for the parts is just a smidge steep tho :roll:

 

Edit: As a thought... are the Corrado mechs the same as the Passat ones? If so, can't you just swap all the mechs over and use the (presumably) cheaper Passat ones but with the Corrado tin top?

The spare one I bought was supposedley mint and in full working condition. Which it isn't because the roof panel is scratched in the usual place and the water plate guides have play in them. So that needs a rebuild aswell as the one currently in the car :x

 

Obviously it's far easier to rebuild one that's already out of the car, and then swap the subframes over when the weather allows.

 

I hate working on the sunroof and believe me I ain't doing it for fun, but I do actually want to start using after having the car 18+ months now....

If the cables are working okay, just fit the repair kits for the water guide plates and and give everything else a good clean and lube.

 

Only other problem is if the tracks have worn...

I know that Tom Ingram fitted a glass Passat sunroof panel to his car when he owned it - was pretty much a straight swap he told me & it fitted perfectly.

 

As for the mechanicals I've been told that "the bits that break" on a Corrado sunroof can in fact be replaced with MkII parts (not MkIII) but I've not been able to verify that independantly.

I swapped a set of 15" alloys with my local breaker for a passat glass roof. (they wanted about £80 cash)

Took it apart, cleaned it & greased all the moving parts & it fits just fine. It needed some adjustment (added washers to the mounting points to lower it a little) but it looks spot on now.

 

Downsides:

 

Increased wind noise (unless you close the blind)

You don't want to chuck a bucket of water over the roof - The slightly larger gaps around the edges allow water into the car more easily & the drain channels inside aren't able to cope! Have never had any leaks with rain though!

 

All in all - very happy!

yeah, the metal panel version of the passat is an earlier car and has a much more curved roof...

 

The glass one I've got is out of the next evolution of the Passat and fits pretty well... 8) it sits about 1mm too high at the very center on the leading edge and about half a mm down on the leading corners, but is as near as damn it perfect across the trailing edge...

 

The wind noise is no different to the metal panel when the blind is shut, admittedly it's slightly noisier with the blind open, but it is actually quieter than the metal panel without it's cover when the blind is open! (don't ask, why do you think I have a moonroof fitted and 2 dead metal sunroofs in my garage! :roll: :lol: )
