Polo GTI

I have just picked up my Polo GTI up from the stealers. I know, I know... :oops: £200 later for a lube service they have advised that a new clutch is on the cards at a very "reasonable" (in their opinion) £450 fitted. And we thought Corrados were expensive to run. Having fun Corrados for the past 7 years I have never experienced an estimate so high. Any ideas on what a normal garage might charge would be appreciated??

my son has a polo gti and about a month ago it was recalled for a new pedal assembly,at this time a new clutch cable was fitted,it still feals heavy and they said it neaded a new clutch £360,that was verve .had another price from vw specialist £225 ,as its not slipping only heavy not going to bother.

4 to 5 hours + parts and VAT usually, so not toooo far off £450. It costs about £350 to 400 to do a VR6 clutch at Stealth, so that quote isn't horrendous. It's the labour involved dropping and refitting the box that accounts for the majority of the cost....and VW labour is upwards of £60 an hour :shock:

Mine is exactly the same, heavy but not slipping, So I'll live with it for a while. Good body building for the left leg tho! Love the GTI but has been more expensive than a 10 year VR to run :mad:

If it's heavy, the friction disc is more than half worn and the pressure plate springs need more pressure to release it.

 

It'll go on for years like that, just depends if your left knee can hack it!

 

You won't believe how light a new clutch is by comparison though :wink:

I would watch the gearbox on them, they are notorious for going, my mates one has had 3 clutches and a new box in under 60k (he is the second owner). They have a habbit of killing diffs, and have heard from a friend who works at VW of a box with 20k on it ejecting it's contents through the casing. :cry:

 

My friends new box cost him the best part of 2k :roll:

 

Hope you got a warranty from the stealers :wink:

Oh dear, my sisters got a GTI too, she had the tensioner go on the cambelt, luckly she got it to a garage in time.. cost her £400!!! :shock:

Don't tell me VW are *still* using pins to secure the final drive instead of bolts?

 

MK2 16V diffs used to grenade too when the diff pins let go....

My tensioner has also been replaced under warranty at 47k, plus the peal box, remotes, bearings in the gearbox, CD player, crank and cam sensors, one alloy wheel horn etc. VW build quality has supposedly improved over the years. I think not :( £69.00 for a clutch from GS&F doesn't seem too bad tho'
