Top Ten 80's and 90's non-VW hot hatches?

whats your top ten favourite non VW-group hot hatches of the 80's and 90's then

to qualify they have to not make more than 150bhp in std form

here's mine..in no order either

 

1.......fiat strada 130tc abarth

2.......ford escort xr3

3.......ford escort RS 1600i

4.......ford escort RS turbo(series 1)

5.......ford fiesta xr2(mk2)

6.......peugeot 205 GTi 1.9

7.......peugeot 309 GTi

8.......vauxhall astra GT/e(mk1)

9.......nissan sunny GTi (91-95 model)

10.....renault 5 GT turbo

Wouldn't have minded owning a 205 GTi 1.9, Fiesta RS Turbo, or a Renault 5 GT Turbo...

 

Not really too sure about the 80's/90's hot hatch scene though I am afraid :(

yeah the original clio 16v counts.........it had 137bhp and the williams 1/2/3 could count too as they had 150bhp

I remeber my mate had the Renault 19 16v.. that was the first car that really got me into cars! That thing used to be able to move at some serious pace.. 2nd gear seemed to go on forever, and the power through 2nd was nuts. Great car!

 

I can only imagine the Clio 16v was even more crazy.. that power crammed into that little car.

My favourite non VW fast hatch is a Lancia delta intergrale evo. They where like rallye's all lhd and had huge arches. I know it had more than 150bhp but thats just unfair! It could be a restricted one for insurance purposes!! :lol: :lol:

Sierra xr4i, 150bhp 2.8 v6 and rear wheel drive, great fun. I would love to be able to get one along side the corrado. The C could come out in the decent weather and the xr4i would be out in the rain. :twisted:

used to have one prior to me discovering german motors...............and "experienced" the joys of combining 150bhp,rwd,a 22 year-old driver and of course a nice wet round-a-bout :shock: :lol: :oops: :evil: luckily just my pride was dented

Fair enough, I think 150bhp is a conservative estimate for them as well.

 

I would have to say Clio Williams then, as long as its been left standard. Would probably have got a Clio 16v instead my first C if they werent French. :lol:

just mind tho joe......150bhp was quite a bit for an eighties hot-hatch and was still a decent output for a nineties hot-hatch :wink:

"XR4i" and "wet" don't go together! Even in the dry, mildy enthusiastic driving would result in the tail whipping out! Straight line speed only!

I have a problem making a list as my favorite hot hatches are all VW group! :lol:

 

The MKI golf GTI was the car that got me into fast cars, then my uncle got a MKII GTi... I've now had 3 MKI GTIs (still got one with a 16V engine that embarasses an awful lot of new VERY expensive cars when it's not in pieces!) 1 late MKII GTI, 1 Corrado 1.8 16V and my current G60... :D

 

I think that the only cars that would make my list other than VAG are:

 

1) Pug 205 gti 1.9 (has to be the 1.9, the 1.6 was tooooooo slowwwwww....)

2) Pug 309 GTI Brooklands

3) Lotus Sunbeam, although I have a feeling they were 150BHP+

4) Series1 Escort RS turbo (Phew, didn't use the 'F' word! :lol: )

 

The problem with all 4 of these is that the build quality sucked... not one of them felt as well built as the VAG offerings... :D

The Renault 19 16V (circa 1991) was a nice car, friend of mine had one (same colour as my VR6 in fact).

The best car that came out of the dagenham dustbin factory of the late 80's has got to be the 3 door sierra cossie my mate used to own one 556bhp and that thing went like sh@t off a hot shovel it scared me to death with him behind the wheel!!!

Not entirely sure a 556 hp cossie fits the bill for a

 

The Ultimate hot hatch of the '90s is without doubt the pug 106 GTI, the sublime handling and revtastic engine just beg for your favourite A or B road blat. These cars are seriously fast and soooo confidence inspiring you feel like a hero every time you drive it, excellent!!! The Ultimate hot hatch - no question!!

 

As for the 80s its got to be the 205 GTI 1.9, throttle respone so sharp it can take your foot off, a fantasticly torquie engine and frightningly responisve handling, if driven properly can still show a clean set of p-zeros to much more powerful opposition!!
