Who can't leave their Corrado alone?

Recommended Posts

Is anyone's car ever truly finished? With even the newest of Corrados turning ten years old in 2005 the Corrado is a car that is obviously going to need on going maintenance (love and affection) but that seems to be the tip of the Iceberg.

Lets hear all the different points of view, from people who are determined to keep their cars as standard as possible and also the stylists, the modifiers, customisers and all points in between.

Personally I bought the best car that I could find/afford of the model/colour and spec and of course heated leather that I wanted and have kept the car largely standard apart from a Supersprint OE style exhaust system, suspension and wheels ! The styling is complemented (cleaned) by red rear lights and crystal side repeaters and a little colour coding of badges, door handles and headlamp surrounds. Everything else remains stock although I took the opportunity to replace top mounts, bearings, rear callipers, discs, pads and dust guards when the Konigsport coilover suspension was fitted. I'm very happy with what I regard as the finished product and like to think of it as being true to the original spirit but mildly improved in the OEM+ style.

So my car is now a 'finished product' as far as i'm concerned, all changes are reversible and the original parts retained. It feels a little strange as in the past I was always finding something new and different to do with my cars and thought of them as constantly evolving projects and never definitively finished. So there will be no body mods, interior changes or the search for more power. For the first time in years I feel more relaxed about my car. Apart from the routine servicing and repairs etc it's complete and I can enjoy the car for what it is, not what it could be.

I have the same ethos as you Gareth. Just the leather to go and then my car will be complete also

Oh and some 20mm adapters from RH to pull the wheels into the arches a bit more.

Well i'm no modifier - one of the reasons I bought a car that was already well modified so I wouldn't have to go through the process myself. Thats because of both the cost, and the inconvenience of having your car off the road for extended periods of time.

Long term though I don't see how the car could ever be finished.. on an old car like the Corrado there are always going to be bits playing on your mind that need sorting. I've got a list of things in my mind to sort next year (oil cooler, charger rebuild, some paint work, new exhaust gaskets) and i'm also aware of performance modifications I could think of doing. But quite honestly I feel that for now that over 200BHP is enough and I just want to concentrate on keeping it as a good, well loved example of the marque, and something that whenever I come to sell, i'll be confident to hand over the keys knowing that there are no gremlins lurking!

its an odd one, before I got the C I was quite into the modified car scene in principle, but due to lack of funds not in practice. I picked the C because of the relativly low purchase cost compared to its benifits (more bang for your buck if you like). Most of the big stuff i've done to mine is through nessesity rather than choice, I just took the opportunity to improve on/ update the parts i was fixing to get the car a little more how I wished it was from the outset. A few cosmetic changes here and there to suit my tastes and I'm done. I'd 'like' leather but I've got no plans to do anything about it because i cant justify spending £800ish to replace an already perfectly good interior, I'd 'like' more power but at the end of the day its a valver and its a little pointless! I'd say my car is now finished in terms of major things and it's going to be a case of keeping it the way i like it from now on while I save for a VR or g60 and start all over again!

I can't leave my car alone. Today a trip to VW cost me £45. I picked up Lupo wipers, new exhaust bracket & a parcel shelf strap.

Last month I changed the Head Unit & it had a new stainless exhaust, all super bright new head/fog light bulb jobbies.

The month before that it had the charger serviced, new knock sensor,

The month before that, it had 2 new tyres and poly bushes

It's probably had more than that 2. Dam I feel skint now :(

same boat here!!

it looks like corrado owners are keen modifiers but like to keep things low key, concentrating on the quality of their cars rather than sticking stuff all over them.

dont get me wrong i do like a lot of modified C`s but even they seem to keep their original style quite well

maybe somethings are best just improving rather than modd`ing

yip, i cant stop, well no matter how hard the bank tries to stop me!!!

but seriously, i am into subtle things, i want the exterior standard, but the brakes and chassis and engine will look fairly standard but will be better and then......................who knows

I'm exactly the same. My car is nearly finished having the turbo conversion completed and I said to myself that I would stop there, then I decide that I want new Recaro speeds and a custom leather interior. I think that will definaely be it!!

But come show season next year I'm sure I will see something else I want.

well, my G60 was pretty much finished apart from needing paint before my recent accident, so I'm not sure where I stand on this one now... :|

I'd got the engine to a stage where it was producing more than enough power, the gearbox how I wanted it, the interior spot on, but now it looks like I may well be starting all over again...

At least this time, I've got all the bits sat there waiting for me to just bolt 'em into the new car so I should be able to build the new car upto the same spec as J-DUB in a very short period of time... 8)

Then I've just got to work out how to do the new project on J-DUB!  8)

A20 Lee how much did you pay for yours.

I've beeen quoted between £800-£1000. Then i've got to get them leathered to my specification, plus the rest of the interior. "OUCH"

Originally I bought the Corrado for looks, and performance in relation to the cost. Everything I change / modify on the car I do becuase I think it's an improvment... I'd never do anything just to be different, or individual, however if they come with, then its a bonus.

I think my C's got a long way to go before its finished in my eyes. I think I'll always want more power, better handling.. but in the end it will come down to whether the C will be able to provide the power / handling for the least money (which it won't) which is when I'll move onto another car.

If money was no object then I think I'd have 2 Corrado's, both specialising in different areas, one for looks/comfort and the other for performance... and then they'd never be finished

this is a big dilemma for me right now as my car is 100% standard. My head is saying just leave it as I know I won't return nearly as much as I have spent modding it when I come to sell. But I know how much more I will like the car if I atleast put a nice set of suspension and tyres on it. I'm really interested in the schrick VGI, and I know how amazing it will probably sound with a good filter and exhaust. I could do this or maybe just save up, leave the car standard and dare I say it, get an M3 EVO. :?

I got a discount on mine from recaro as they were change the cloth design. Think the going rate is £375 each + Vat. Then £600ish to trim them and you need to buy some factory Corrado recaros, bin the seats and use the subframes. You could possibly modify the std corrado subframes by narrowing them by 2" but its a hell of a job. Personally i felt it was worth the effort and expense as the fit is factory and the shape of the seats matches the rear seats. There fantastic to sit in too, mine also have custom centres but thats my secret

I don't intend to change anything about mine except fitting Lupo wipers - I can't cope with the regular ones for a whole winter! However, I can't leave the car alone - I keep having to take it out for a drive!

I do have other 'project' cars though - which is why I'm as skint as those who haven't finished their Corrados yet!

Tidy.

Looking good with those wheels gareth! Havnt seen them in flesh yet. Since you saw my C last at ed38 it changed a bit with addition of kr-cam, mesh grille, eyebrow spoiler,in-pro rear lights(temp mod),clear repeters,fk konigsports up front, koni ssk-s rear, uprated headlights loom, and on inside kahn steering wheel, chrome gear knob, chrome handbrake cover. Like you said all mods are reversible and will be reversed some time next year when car goes up for sale as i want a vr6. That is if i can find one in spec/condition i want as i am intending to keep it for a loooong while. maybe i would of done more mods on a C but mk1 keeps getting in the way as i am trying to have it on the road by late january. I am sick of taxying my missus about! Anyone looking to purchase a very straight, tidy late valver next summer?

Can't you buy sub frames direct from Recaro, without having to buy thhe seats aswell. I'll have a look on the Recao website to see what it says.

Cheers mate

don't know, i got mine secondhand. Bet there not cheap.

I'm going backwards....the car drives so much better with the standard Sebring "winter" wheels that I'm just going to leave them on. The 17s can either live in the shed or I'll sell them to anyone that makes me a decent offer. Granted, it looks a lot better on the 17s but it's noticeably slower and the handling is vague - anyway I can't see the wheels from inside so who cares what it looks like...right?

I didn't think you'd agree!

I can honestly say mine will never be "finished". I reach stages where I am happy with aspects of the car, but there is so much I want and will eventually do. I am going with the european approach of keeping the same car for a long time and evolving it. My car will be very different this year for the show season, and probably for the next year and so on. But its my hobby and I can think of worse ones! :)

Being no mechanic, I'm happy with my valver as it is. It's been tinkered with under the bonnet, and I bought it for driving experience and the love of driving rather than planning to do anything to it. I love the looks, handling and sound of it, and apart from mechanical repairs I can't think of anything I'd like to do.

Cheers,

Tom
